Transaxle Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the air cleaner intake duct.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the transaxle wiring harness electrical connector.
  8.  
  9. Remove the wiring harness ground nut from the transaxle.
  10.  
  11. Remove the wiring harness grounds from the transaxle.
  12.  
  13. Remove the wiring harness ground bolt from the transaxle.
  14.  
  15. Remove the wiring harness grounds from the transaxle.
  16.  
  17. Remove the wiring harness bracket bolt and reposition the wiring harness.
  18.  
  19. Remove the range selector cable from the transaxle shift lever.
  20.  
  21. Remove the range selector retainer from the cable.
  22.  
  23. Remove the range selector cable from the transaxle.
  24.  
  25. Remove the upper transaxle bolts and the stud.
  26.  
  27. Install the engine support fixture. Refer to Engine Removal & Installation.
  28.  
  29. Raise and support the vehicle.
  30.  
  31. Remove the front wheels.
  32.  
  33. Remove the left and the right engine splash shields.
  34.  
  35. Remove the frame from the vehicle. Refer to Engine Removal & Installation.
  36.  
  37. Remove the starter motor.
  38.  
  39. Install flywheel holding tool J 37096 in order to gain access to the torque converter bolts and to prevent the flywheel from turning.
  40.  
  41. Remove the torque converter bolts.
  42.  
  43. Remove the oil cooler pipes from the transaxle.
    NOTE
    Position and secure the halfshafts out of the way.

  45. Remove the left and the right halfshafts from the transaxle.
  46.  
  47. Secure the drive shafts to the steering knuckles.
  48.  
  49. Disconnect the electrical connector from the vehicle speed sensor.
    NOTE
    Ensure that the transaxle jack is properly secured to the transaxle.

  51. Position a transaxle jack under the transaxle and secure the jack firmly to the transaxle.
  52.  
  53. Remove the transaxle brace.
  54.  
  55. Remove the lower transaxle bolt and the stud.
  56.  
  57. Remove the transaxle from the vehicle.
  58.  
  59. Transfer all necessary parts as needed.
  60.  

To install:


NOTE
Ensure that the transaxle is secured properly to the transaxle jack.

  1. Position the transaxle onto a transaxle jack and secure the transaxle to the jack.
  2.  
  3. Install the transaxle into the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Install the lower transaxle bolt and the stud. Tighten the bolt and the stud to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the transaxle brace. Tighten the transaxle brace bolts to the transaxle to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm). Tighten the transaxle brace bolts to the engine to 46 ft. lbs. (63 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Prevent the flywheel from turning.
  10.  
  11. Install the torque converter bolts. Tighten the bolts to 46 ft. lbs. (63 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the halfshafts into the transaxle.
  14.  
  15. Install the oil cooler pipes to the transaxle.
  16.  
  17. Install the starter motor.
  18.  
  19. Remove the transaxle jack from the transaxle.
  20.  
  21. Install the frame to the vehicle.
  22.  
  23. Connect the electrical connector to the vehicle speed sensor.
  24.  
  25. Install the left and the right engine splash shield.
  26.  
  27. Install the front wheels.
  28.  
  29. Lower the vehicle.
  30.  
  31. Remove the engine support fixture.
  32.  
  33. Install the upper transaxle bolts and the stud. Tighten the bolts and the stud to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm).
  34.  
  35. Install the cable to the transaxle range selector cable bracket.
  36.  
  37. Install the A/T range selector cable retainer to the cable.
  38.  
  39. Install the transaxle range selector cable to the transaxle shift lever.
  40.  
  41. Reposition the wiring harness and install the wiring harness bracket and the bolt. Tighten the bolt to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  42.  
  43. Install the wiring harness grounds to the transaxle.
  44.  
  45. Install the transaxle wiring harness ground bolt to the transaxle. Tighten the bolt to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  46.  
  47. Install the wiring harness grounds to the transaxle.
  48.  
  49. Install the wiring harness ground nut to the transaxle. Tighten the nut to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).
  50.  
  51. Connect the transaxle wiring harness electrical connector.
  52.  
  53. Install the air cleaner intake duct.
  54.  
  55. Connect the negative battery cable.
  56.  
  57. Fill the transaxle with transmission fluid.
  58.  
  59. Inspect the transaxle for fluid leaks.
    NOTE
    It is recommended that Transmission Adaptive Pressure (TAP) information be reset. Resetting the TAP values using a scan tool will erase all learned values in all cells. As a result, The ECM, PCM or TCM will need to relearn TAP values. Transaxle performance may be affected as new TAP values are learned.
