Removal & Installation



3.6L Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Turn the ignition OFF.
  4.  
  5. On bank 1, remove the engine cover.
  6.  
  7. If replacing the ignition coil for cylinder 5 , remove and reposition the intake manifold as follows:
    1. Disconnect the air cleaner duct from the throttle body.
    2.  
    3. Disconnect the positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) hose from the right bank camshaft cover.
    4.  
    5. Remove the intake manifold bolts, brace bolts and brace.
    6.  
    7. Remove the upper intake manifold bolts. Do not separate the manifolds.
    8.  

  8.  
  9. On both banks, remove the ignition coil electrical connectors.
  10.  
  11. Remove the ignition coil bolts and the coils.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Install the ignition coils and tighten the bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the ignition coil electrical connectors.
  4.  
  5. If necessary, install the intake manifold.
  6.  
  7. Install the engine cover.
  8.  
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10.  

3.8L Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the spark plug wires from the ignition coil.
  4.  
  5. Remove the ignition coil screws.
  6.  
  7. Remove the ignition coil.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Install the ignition coils and tighten to 40 inch lbs. (5 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Connect the spark plug wires.
  4.  
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.
  6.  

Testing



The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) regulates the individual ignition coils and checks their function via a separate diagnostic cable. A diagnostic trouble code is generated if the control module detects a faulty signal for an ignition coil.

  1. Fault symptoms may include:

    Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) lit
     
    The engine not firing on all cylinders

The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) can help diagnose which ignition coil is involved.
