Crankshaft Damper (Balancer)

Removal & Installation



3.6L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the accessory drive belt.
  4.  
  5. Raise and support the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Remove the starter.

  9. Install flywheel holding tool EN 46106 through the starter mounting hole.
  10.  
  11. Remove the crankshaft damper bolt.
  12.  
  13. Remove the crankshaft damper with a 3-jawed puller.
  14.

  1. Use tool J 41998-B (nut, bearing and washer) to install the crankshaft damper.
    NOTE
    Do not lubricate the crankshaft front oil seal or crankshaft damper sealing surfaces. The crankshaft damper is installed into a dry seal.

  3. Apply lubricant to the inside of the crankshaft damper hub bore.
  4.  
  5. Place the crankshaft damper in position on the crankshaft.
  6.  
  7. Thread tool J 41998-B in the crankshaft. Ensure you engage at least 10 threads of the tool before pressing the crankshaft damper in place.
  8.  
  9. Push the crankshaft damper into position by tightening the nut on the tool until the large washer bottoms out on the crankshaft end.
  10.  
  11. Remove the tool.
  12.  
  13. Install the crankshaft damper bolt.
  14.  
  15. Tighten the crankshaft damper bolt.
    1. Tighten the crankshaft damper bolt to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Tighten the crankshaft damper bolt an additional 150°.
    4.

  17. Remove the holding tool.
  18.  
  19. Install the starter.
  20.  
  21. Install the accessory drive belt.
  22.  
  23. Lower the vehicle.
  24.  

3.8L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the accessory drive belt.
  6.  
  7. Raise and support the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Remove the right front tire and wheel.
  10.  
  11. Remove the right engine splash shield retainers and the engine splash shield.
  12.  
  13. Remove the torque converter covers.

  15. Use tool J 37096 to secure the flywheel in order to prevent the crankshaft from rotating.

  17. Remove the crankshaft damper bolt and discard the balancer bolt.
    NOTE
    Do not separate the crankshaft pulley from the crankshaft damper. Service the crankshaft pulley and the crankshaft damper as an assembly.

  19. Remove the crankshaft balancer (damper) using tool J 38197-A.

To install:

  1. Coat the engine front cover seal contact area on the crankshaft damper, and the seal surface with engine oil.
  2.  
  3. Install the crankshaft damper.
  4.  
  5. Prevent the crankshaft from rotating.
  6.  
  7. Install the new crankshaft damper bolt. Tighten the bolt to 111 ft. lbs. (150 Nm), plus 76°.
  8.  
  9. Install the torque converter covers.
  10.  
  11. Install the right engine splash shield and the engine splash shield retainers.
  12.  
  13. Install the right front tire and wheel.
  14.  
  15. Lower the vehicle.
  16.  
  17. Install the accessory drive belt.
    NOTE
    The following CKP System Variation Learn Procedure must be performed.

  19. Install a scan tool.
  20.  
  21. Monitor the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) for DTCs with a scan tool.
  22.  
  23. Select the crankshaft position variation learn procedure with a scan tool.
  24.  
  25. The scan tool instructs you to perform the following:
    1. Accelerate to Wide Open Throttle (WOT).
    2.  
    3. Release the throttle when fuel cut-off occurs.
    4.  
    5. Observe the fuel cut-off specifications for the applicable engine.
    6.  
    7. The engine should not accelerate beyond the calibrated RPM value.
    8.  
    9. Release the throttle immediately if the value is exceeded.
    10.  
    11. Block the drive wheels.
    12.  
    13. Set the parking brake.
    14.  
    15. DO NOT apply the brake pedal.
    16.  
    17. Cycle the ignition from OFF to ON.
    18.  
    19. Apply and hold the brake pedal.
    20.  
    21. Start and idle the engine.
    22.  
    23. Turn the A/C OFF.
    24.  
    25. The vehicle must remain in Park or Neutral.

  27. The scan tool monitors certain component signals to determine if all the conditions are met to continue with the procedure. The scan tool only displays the condition that inhibits the procedure.

  29. Enable the crankshaft position system variation learn procedure with the scan tool and perform the following:
    NOTE
    While the learn procedure is in progress, release the throttle immediately when the engine starts to decelerate. The engine control is returned to the operator and the engine responds to throttle position after the learn procedure is complete.

  31. Accelerate to WOT.
    1. Release when fuel cut-off occurs.
    2.  
    3. Test in progress.
    4.

  33. The scan tool displays Learn Status: Learned this ignition. If the scan tool indicates that DTC P0315 ran and passed, the CKP variation learn procedure is complete. If the scan tool indicates DTC P0315 failed or did not run, refer to DTC P0315.

  35. Turn OFF the ignition for 30 seconds after the learn procedure is completed successfully.
