Inspection

3.6L Engine

The oil pump is not serviceable. If the oil pump fails, it must be replaced as a complete unit.

3.8L Engine
  1. Use a suitable solvent to clean the oil pump.
  2.
  3. Remove all old gasket material from the engine front cover and from the engine block.
  4.
  5. Inspect the oil pump cover and the engine front cover for cracks, scoring, a porous or damaged casting, damaged threads or excessive wear.
  6.
  7. Inspect the pressure regulator valve for scoring, burrs or foreign material or sticking in the bore.
  8.
  9. Inspect the pressure regulator spring for loss of tension or bending. Replace the pressure regulator spring if damaged.
  10.
  11. Inspect the oil pump gears for chipping, galling, scoring or excessive wear.
  12.
  13. Measure the inner oil pump gear tip clearance. If the clearance for the inner oil pump gear tip is greater than 0.152mm (0.006 in) the oil pump must be replaced.
  14.
  15. Measure the outer oil pump gear diameter clearance. If the outer oil pump gear diameter clearance is greater than 0.381mm (0.015 in) the oil pump must be replaced.
  16.
  17. Measure the oil pump gear end clearance.
  18.
  19. Measure the pressure regulator valve to bore clearance. If the pressure regulator valve to bore clearance is greater than 0.076mm (0.003 in) the oil pump must be replaced.
  20.

Removal & Installation

3.6L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
    NOTE
Do not remove the left bank idler sprocket.

  2.
  3. Remove the primary timing chain.
  4.
  5. Remove the crankshaft sprocket.
    NOTE
There are no serviceable components within the oil pump. Disassemble the pump only to diagnose an oiling concern. A disassembled oil pump must not be reused. A disassembled oil pump must be replaced.
