Removal & Installation



3.6L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the ECU module bracket. Position it out of the way. DO NOT remove the ECU or disconnect it.
  6.  
  7. Remove the alternator assembly.
  8.  
  9. Remove the coolant overflow reservoir.
  10.  
  11. Remove the power steering reservoir and position it out of the way.
  12.  
  13. Remove the camshaft covers.
  14.  
  15. Remove the upper radiator hose.
  16.  
  17. Remove the water pump.
  18.  
  19. Remove the engine splash shield.
  20.  
  21. Remove the crankshaft damper.
  22.  
  23. Remove the accessory drive belt tensioner.
  24.  
  25. Remove the camshaft position actuator valve bolts.
  26.  
  27. Remove the camshaft position actuator valves from the front cover.
  28.  
  29. Remove the engine front cover bolts.
    WARNING
    Do not pry between the engine front cover and the camshaft position sensors or the camshaft position actuators in order to shear the RTV. Use the pry points and a bolt in the jackscrew hole in order to remove the engine front cover. Damage to the camshaft position sensors or the camshaft position actuators may occur if the camshaft position sensors or the camshaft position actuators are used to pry against in order to remove the engine front cover.

  31. Loosely install a 10 x 1.5mm bolt in the "jackscrew" hole.

  33. Using the pry points located at the edge of the front cover and the "jackscrew," shear the RTV sealant.

  35. Remove the engine front cover.

  37. Rotate the crankshaft until the left cylinder head camshafts align with the EN 46105-2 and the right cylinder head camshafts align with the EN 46105-1.

  39. Install the EN 46105-1 to the right camshafts.

NOTE
Do not lubricate the crankshaft front oil seal or crankshaft damper sealing surfaces. The crankshaft damper is installed into a dry seal.

  1. Install the NEW crankshaft front oil seal into the engine front cover using a seal driver.
  2.  
  3. Place the seal into position with the notches in the seal down. The notches will face in board when properly installed.
  4.  
  5. Install the NEW camshaft position actuator valve oil seals into the engine front cover.
  6.  
  7. Install the 8mm (0.315 in.) guide from kit EN 46109 into the cylinder block positions as shown.

  9. Install the NEW engine front cover to cylinder block seal.

  11. Place a 3mm (0.118 in.) bead of RTV sealant, GM P/N 12378521 (Canadian P/N 88901148) or equivalent, on the engine front cover as shown (1).

  13. Place the engine front cover onto the guide pins and slide into position.
  14.  
  15. Remove the guide pins from the cylinder block.
  16.  
  17. Hand start all the front cover bolts.
  18.  
  19. Tighten the engine front cover bolts in the sequence shown. Tighten the engine front cover bolts in sequence to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).

  21. Install NEW O-rings on the camshaft position sensor.
  22.  
  23. Place the camshaft position sensors in position on the front cover.
  24.  
  25. Install the camshaft position sensor bolts. Tighten the camshaft position sensor bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).

  27. Place the camshaft position actuator valves in position on the front cover.
  28.  
  29. Install the camshaft position actuator valve bolts. Tighten the camshaft position actuator valve bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).

  31. Install the water pump.
  32.  
  33. Install the camshaft covers.
  34.  
  35. Install the accessory drive belt tensioner. Install the accessory drive belt tensioner bolts. Tighten the accessory drive belt tensioner center bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm). Tighten the accessory drive belt tensioner outer bolts to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).

  37. Install the crankshaft damper.
  38.  
  39. Install the coolant overflow reservoir.
  40.  
  41. Install the power steering reservoir. Tighten the M6 bolt to 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm). Tighten the M8 bolt to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).

  43. Install the upper radiator hose.
  44.  
  45. Install the alternator assembly.
  46.  
  47. Install engine splash shield.
