Power Sunroof

Diagnosis & Testing

If the power sunroof system fuse is open and a short to ground in the accessory voltage circuit is not detected, the fault could be a short to ground in one of the power sunroof control circuits. This would open the power sunroof system fuse when the sunroof switch is pressed.

The use of the Diagnostic System Check will identify the correct procedure for diagnosing the system and where the procedure is located. Inspect for aftermarket devices which could affect the operation of the system. Inspect the easily accessible or visible system components for obvious damage or conditions which could cause the symptom. Faulty electrical connections or wiring may be the cause of intermittent conditions.

  1. Disconnect the sunroof switch from the harness connector.
  2.
  3. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position with the engine OFF.
  4.
  5. Probe the accessory voltage circuit of the sunroof switch harness connector with a test lamp that is connected to a good ground. The test lamp should illuminate.
  6.
  7. Connect a test lamp between the accessory voltage circuit and the ground circuit of the sunroof switch harness connector. The test lamp should illuminate.
  8.
  9. Test the accessory voltage circuit of the sunroof switch for a short to ground or an open.
  10.
  11. Probe each of the sunroof motor control circuits of the sunroof switch harness connector with a test lamp that is connected to battery positive voltage. See if the test lamp illuminates at any of the sunroof motor control circuits. Follow the circuit diagram.
  12.
  13. Connect a test lamp between the sunroof motor close control circuit of the sunroof motor/actuator harness connector and a good ground. Press the sunroof switch to the close position for 3 seconds. The test lamp should illuminate.
  14.
  15. Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the sunroof switch.
  16.
  17. Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the sunroof motor/actuator.
  18.
  19. Make necessary repairs and test for proper function of the sunroof assembly.

Removal & Installation
Motor
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
    NOTE
This sunroof system is timed from the factory in order to allow the actuator to shut off automatically when the sunroof window reaches a certain position. Use extreme care when removing the sunroof actuator from the sunroof module. Improper removal may cause the timing to be thrown off. Anytime the sunroof actuator requires removal from the sunroof module, ensure that the sunroof window is in the fully closed position and the J 41718, sunroof timing pins, are installed.

  2.
  3. Position the sunroof window panel to the fully closed position.
    CAUTION
Do not attempt to repair or alter the head impact energy-absorbing material glued to the headliner or to the garnish trims. If the material is damaged, replace the headliner and/or the garnish trim. Failure to do so could result in personal injury.

    CAUTION
Use care when working around the head curtain inflator module. Sharp tools may puncture the curtain airbag. If the head curtain inflator module is damaged in any way, it must be replaced.

    CAUTION
If the vehicle is equipped with a head curtain inflator module, ensure that the inflator module and tether are undamaged. If the tether or curtain airbag are damaged in any way, they must be replaced.

    CAUTION
This vehicle may be equipped with roof rail module air bags. Disable these air bags before performing any work on the headliner.

  4.
  5. Disable the SIR. Refer to Air Bag (Supplemental Restraint System), Disarming the System.
  6.
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    The sunshades

    The sunshade anchors

    The overhead console

The electric connector to the rearview mirror

The bolts from the roof rail rear assist handle

    The windshield pillar garnish molding

The upper center pillar trim panel

The rear quarter upper trim panels

  8.
  9. Remove the finish lace from the sunroof opening:
    1. Pull inward on the sunroof opening trim bezel to release the tabs from the sunroof opening.
    2.
    3. Remove the sunroof opening trim bezel from the headliner.
    4.

  10.
  11. Using J 38778, remove the push-in retainers, located over the rear seat, from the headliner.
  12.
  13. Remove the rear window trim panel as necessary to access the headliner harness connectors.
  14.
  15. Disconnect the headliner electric harness connectors, located under the right side of the rear window shelf.
  16.
  17. Disconnect the rear courtesy lamps in the headliner.
  18.
  19. Recline the right front seat back to a horizontal position.
    NOTE
Protect interior surfaces from sharp edges of headliner during removal enlist aid to assist with removal of headliner.

  20.
  21. Remove the headliner from the vehicle through the right front door.
  22.
  23. Remove the right and left front screw from the sunroof window panel.
    NOTE
Before removing the sunroof motor (actuator), ensure that J 41718 are tight and holding the cable.

  24.
  25. Install the sunroof timing pins into the front sunroof window panel screw holes to retain the cable adjustment.
  26.
  27. Disconnect the electrical connector from the sunroof module motor (actuator).
  28.
  29. Remove the bolts from the sunroof motor.
  30.
