Lower Ball Joints

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the tire and wheel.
  6.  
  7. Drill a pilot hole through the rivets.
  8.  
  9. Drill the remainder of the rivets.
  10.  
  11. Use a hammer and a chisel in order to remove the remainder of the rivet heads.
  12.  
  13. Remove the cotter pin from the ball stud.
  14.  
  15. Loosen the ball stud nut.

  17. Install a tool such as J 41820 over the ball stud and lower control arm.
  18.  
  19. Rotate the ball stud nut counterclockwise in order to separate the ball stud from the steering knuckle.
  20.  
  21. Remove the tool.
  22.  
  23. Remove the ball stud nut.
  24.  
  25. Remove the ball stud from the lower control arm.
  26.  

To install:

  1. Install the ball stud to the lower control arm.

  3. Install the NEW ball stud bolts facing down, away from the ball stud.
  4.  
  5. Install the NEW ball stud nuts. Tighten the NEW ball stud nuts to 50 ft. lbs. (68 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the ball stud to the steering knuckle.
  8.  
  9. Install the ball stud castle nut. Tighten the nut to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm) plus an additional 120°.
  10.  
  11. Install a new cotter pin and bend the ends.
  12.  
  13. Install the tire and wheels.
  14.  
  15. Lower the vehicle.
  16.  
  17. Check the wheel alignment.
  18.
