Fuel Pressure Regulator

Removal & Installation

3.6L Engine

The fuel pressure regulator is contained in the fuel sender assembly. The fuel pressure regulator is a diaphragm relief valve. The diaphragm has fuel pressure on one side and regulator spring pressure on the other side. A software bias compensates the injector on time because the fuel pressure regulator is not referenced to the manifold vacuum. The fuel pressure regulator keeps fuel available to the injectors at a regulated pressure.

To service the fuel pressure regulator, refer to Fuel Pump, removal and installation.

3.8L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.
  3. Relieve the fuel pressure. Refer to Relieving Fuel System Pressure.
  4.
  5. Clean any dirt from the fuel pressure regulator retaining ring.
  6.
  7. Remove the vacuum line from the pressure regulator.
  8.
  9. Remove the snap ring.
  10.
  11. Using a shop towel to catch any spilled fuel, lift and twist the fuel pressure regulator in order to remove the fuel pressure regulator from the fuel pressure regulator housing.
  12.
  13. Remove the regulator small and large O-ring ad back up O-ring.
  14.
  15. Cover the fuel pressure regulator housing to prevent contamination from entering the fuel system.
  16.

To install:

  1. Install the new O-rings on the fuel pressure regulator, if a new fuel pressure regulator is not being installed. Lubricate the O-rings lightly with clean engine oil.
  2.
  3. Install the regulator back up O-ring.
  4.
  5. Install the regulator O-ring large.
  6.
  7. Install the regulator O-ring small.
  8.
  9. Install the fuel pressure regulator in the fuel pressure regulator housing.
  10.
  11. Install the snap ring.
  12.
  13. Connect the vacuum line to the fuel pressure regulator.
  14.
  15. Tighten the fuel fill cap.
  16.
  17. Connect the negative battery cable.
  18.
  19. Inspect for leaks.
  20.
  21. Turn ON the ignition for 2 seconds.
  22.
  23. Turn OFF the ignition for 10 seconds.
  24.
  25. Turn ON the ignition.
  26.
  27. Inspect for fuel leaks.
  28.
