Removal & Installation



Rear
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Depressurize the system.
  4.  
  5. Remove the wheel well liner.
  6.  
  7. Place supports under the rear crossmember.
  8.  
  9. Remove the clips securing the air spring to the chassis.
  10.  
  11. Remove the bolt securing the air spring to the axle.
  12.  
  13. Raise the chassis slightly with a jack to provide clearance.
  14.  
  15. Move the air spring away from the chassis.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the air tube from the spring. Seal the openings.
  18.  
  19. Remove the spring.
    WARNING
    Keep the chassis supported until the system is repressurized. Never allow the chassis to rest on a deflated spring.

To install:

  1. Clean the mating surfaces of the chassis, axle and spring.
  2.  
  3. Connect the pipe.
  4.  
  5. Connect the spring to the chassis.
  6.  
  7. Lower the chassis just enough to connect the air spring to the axle.
  8.  
  9. Place the air spring on the axle and install the clip.
  10.  
  11. Repressurize the system.
  12.  
  13. Install the liner.
  14.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Using TestBook, depressurize SLS air system.
    NOTE
    After depressurizing, about 15 psi (1 bar) of air pressure remains in the system.

  4.  
  5. Raise and support rear of vehicle.
    WARNING
    Never work on or under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always use safety stands.

  6.  
  7. Remove the wheels.
  8.  
  9. Remove the 2 clips securing the air spring to the chassis.
  10.  
  11. Collapse the air spring and disconnect the pipe from the top of the air spring.
    CAUTION
    Always fit plugs to open connections to prevent contamination.

  12.  
  13. Rotate air spring to unlock it from the axle and remove air spring.
  14.  
  15. Remove connector from pipe.
  16.  

To install:

  1. Clean mating faces of air spring, axle and chassis.
    CAUTION
    Check air spring bag for any sign of damage. If bag is damaged, air spring assembly must be replaced.

  3. Fit pipe connector to air spring.
  4.  
  5. Location air spring onto axle and rotate 90° to fully engage bayonet fitting.
  6.  
  7. Connect pipe to top of air spring.
  8.  
  9. Engage top locating pins of air spring in chassis and secure with clips.
  10.  
  11. Using TestBook, re-pressurized SLS system.
    WARNING
    Eye protection must be worn during this procedure.

  13. Install wheels and tighten nuts to 103 ft. lbs. (140 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Remove safety stands and lower vehicle.
  16.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Use TestBook to properly depressurize the system.
  4.  
  5. Remove the wheel well liner.
  6.  
  7. Place supports under the rear crossmember.
  8.  
  9. Remove the clips securing the air spring to the chassis.
  10.  
  11. Remove the bolt securing the air spring to the axle.
  12.  
  13. Raise the chassis slightly with a jack to provide clearance.
  14.  
  15. Move the air spring away from the chassis.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the air tube from the spring. Seal the openings.
  18.  
  19. Remove the spring.
    WARNING
    Keep the chassis supported until the system is repressurized. Never allow the chassis to rest on a deflated spring.

To install:

  1. Clean the mating surfaces of the chassis, axle and spring.
  2.  
  3. Connect the pipe.
  4.  
  5. Connect the spring to the chassis.
  6.  
  7. Lower the chassis just enough to connect the air spring to the axle.
  8.  
  9. Place the air spring on the axle and install the clip.
  10.  
  11. Repressurize the system.
  12.  
  13. Install the liner.
  14.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.

  3. Use TestBook/T4 to properly depressurize the system.
  4.  
  5. Place supports under the rear crossmember.
  6.  
  7. Remove the clips securing the air spring to the chassis.
  8.  
  9. Remove the screw securing the air spring to the lower arm.
  10.  
  11. Remove the bolt securing the damper to the lower arm.
  12.  
  13. Release the damper from the lower arm.
  14.  
  15. Lower the suspension arm and release the spring.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the air tube from the spring. Seal the openings.
  18.  
  19. Remove the spring.
    WARNING
    Keep the chassis supported until the system is repressurized. Never allow the chassis to rest on a deflated spring.

To install:

  1. Place the air spring on the axle, ensuring the rotation lock spigot is correctly located and install the clip.
  2.  
  3. Tighten the air pipe connection.
  4.  
  5. Install the screw securing the air spring to the lower arm.
  6.  
  7. Align the damper to the lower arm and tighten the bolt to 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Pressurize the system enough to locate the spring top mounting and install the clip.
  10.  
  11. Fully pressurize the system.
  12.  
  13. Install the wheels.
  14.  

Front
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Depressurize the system.
  4.  
  5. Remove the wheel well liner.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the air tube from the spring. Seal the openings.
  8.  
  9. Place supports under the front crossmember.
  10.  
  11. Remove the clips securing the air spring to the chassis.
  12.  
  13. Remove the bolt securing the air spring to the axle.
  14.  
  15. Remove the pin.
  16.  
  17. Raise the chassis slightly with a jack to provide clearance.
  18.  
  19. Remove the spring.
    WARNING
    Keep the chassis supported until the system is repressurized. Never allow the chassis to rest on a deflated spring.

To install:

  4.  
  5. Remove the wheels.
  6.  
  7. Remove the wheel well liner.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the air tube from the spring. Seal the openings.
  10.  
  11. Place supports under the front crossmember.
  12.  
  13. Remove the clips securing the air spring to the chassis.
  14.  
  15. Remove the bolt securing the air spring to the axle.
  16.  
  17. Remove the pin.
  18.  
  19. Raise the chassis slightly with a jack to provide clearance.
  20.  
  21. Remove the spring.
    WARNING
    Keep the chassis supported until the system is pressurized after repairs are complete. Never allow the chassis to rest on a deflated spring.

To install:

  1. Clean the mating surfaces of the chassis, axle and spring.
  2.  
  3. Place the air spring on the axle and install the pin and bolt.
  4.  
  5. Lower the chassis just enough to connect the air spring.
  6.  
  7. Connect the pipe.
  8.  
  9. Repressurize the system.
  10.  
  11. Install the liner.
  12.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Use TestBook/T4 to properly depressurize the self-leveling suspension (SLS) system.
  4.  
  5. Remove the wheels.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the ABS sensor harness and brake line from damper.
  8.  
  9. On the left side, release the brake pad wear sensor lead from the damper.
  10.  
  11. Remove the anti-roll bar link from the damper.
  12.  
  13. Remove the brake caliper.
  14.  
  15. Remove the track rod end nut.
  16.  
  17. Separate the ball pin from the steering arm.
  18.  
  19. Position a jack under the lower control arm.
  20.  
  21. Remove 2 bolts attaching the hub to the damper.
  22.  
  23. Release the hub from the damper.
  24.  
  25. From inside the engine compartment, remove the inboard nut attaching the spring and damper assembly, and mark the reference location for installation.
  26.  
  27. Remove 2 remaining nuts and release the spring and damper assembly enough to access the air pipe.
  28.  
  29. Remove the connector from the air spring.
  30.  
  31. Remove the spring and damper assembly and discard the paper gasket.
    WARNING
    Keep the chassis supported until the system is repressurized. Never allow the chassis to rest on a deflated spring.

To install:

  1. Clean the spring and damper mounting locations.
  2.  
  3. If a new spring and damper are being installed, remove the air connector from the old spring.
  4.  
  5. Fit a new paper gasket to the spring and damper assembly.
  6.  
  7. Position the spring in place using the refere3nce marks and connect the air pipe.
  8.  
  9. Install the mounting nuts and tighten the nuts to 42 ft. lbs. (56 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the hub to the damper. Tighten the bolts to 184 ft. lbs. (250 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Using a new nut, install the ball joint to the steering arm and tighten the nut to 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install the brake caliper.
  16.  
  17. On the left side, install the brake pad wear sensor lead to the damper.
  18.  
  19. Connect the ABS sensor harness and brake line from damper.
  20.  
  21. Install the track rod end nut.
  22.  
  23. Install the anti-roll bar link to the damper. Tighten the nut to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).
  24.  
  25. Use TestBook/T4 to properly pressurize the system, with the vehicle weight off the ground.
  26.  
  27. Install the wheels.
