Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the top arm.
  6.  
  7. Remove the drive belt.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the wiring from the alternator.
  10.  
  11. Remove the lower bolt, upper nut and front plate bolt
  12.  
  13. Remove the alternator.
  14.  
  15. Installation is the reverse of removal. Tighten all mounting bolts/nut to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the drive belt.
  6.  
  7. Remove the 2 mounting bolts.
  8.  
  9. Lift the alternator from the bracket and disconnect the wires.
  10.  
  11. Installation is the reverse of removal. If the pulley was removed, tighten the pulley bolt to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm). Torque the mounting bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the upper fan cowl. Remove viscous fan.
  6.  
  7. Loosen the belt tensioner and remove drive belt.
  8.  
  9. Remove the 2 mounting bolts.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect alternator wiring, then remove the alternator from its mounting bracket.
  12.  
  13. Installation is the reverse of removal. Torque alternator mounting bolts to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm). Hold tensioner fully clockwise in order to fit the drive belt around the pulley during installation.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the drive belt.
  6.  
  7. Remove the 2 mounting bolts.
  8.  
  9. Lift the alternator from the bracket and disconnect the wires.
  10.  
  11. Installation is the reverse of removal. Tighten B+ wire nut to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm). Tighten D+ nut to 3.5 ft. lbs. (5 Nm). Tighten the alternator mounting bolts to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm). Install alternator belt.
  12.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
  4.  
  5. Drain the cooling system.
  6.  
  7. Remove the upper radiator hose.
  8.  
  9. Remove the cooling fan assembly.
  10.  
  11. Position the charcoal canister purge valve aside.
  12.  
  13. Remove the drive belt.
  14.  
  15. Remove the drive belt tensioner.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the alternator wiring.
  18.  
  19. Remove the 6 mounting bolts.
  20.  
  21. Lift the alternator from the bracket and disconnect the wires.
  22.  
  23. Installation is the reverse of removal. Tighten the alternator wire nuts to 10 ft. lbs. (13 Nm). Tighten the alternator mounting bolts to 10 ft. lbs. (13 Nm). Tighten the drive belt tensioner to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm). Install alternator belt.

4.0L & 4.6L
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.

  3. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the drive belt.
  6.  
  7. Remove the 2 mounting bolts.
  8.  
  9. Lift the alternator from the bracket and disconnect the wires.
  10.  
  11. Installation is the reverse of removal. If the pulley was removed, tighten the pulley bolt to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm). Torque the mounting bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
