CAUTION
Refer to the applicable precautions for this system before performing the following operation. Failure to follow the warnings and cautions could result in possible personal injury or death.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Recover the refrigerant from A/C system, as outlined in this section.
  4.
  5. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  6.
  7. Remove the underbelly panel.
  8.
  9. Remove the right front wheel and tire.
  10.
  11. Remove 3 bolts securing RH splash shield to body and remove shield.
  12.
  13. Using a 3/8- square drive socket bar, raise ancillary drive belt tensioner and release drive belt from A/C compressor pulley.
    WARNING
Before disconnecting or removing components, ensure the immediate area around joint faces and connections are clean. Plug open connections to prevent contamination.

  14.
  15. Remove the 2 bolts securing high and low pressure pipes to the compressor. Release pipes from compressor, remove and discard the O-rings. Plug or cap the lines and ports.

To install:

  1. If a new compressor is being installed, a calculated quantity of oil must be drained from the new compressor before fitting. To calculate the quantity of oil to be drained:
    1. Remove the drain plug from the old compressor.
    2.
    3. Invert the compressor and gravity drain the oil into a calibrated measuring cylinder. Rotate the compressor clutch to ensure the compressor is completely drained.
    4.
    5. Note the quantity of oil drained (Y cm3).
    6.
    7. Calculate the quantity of oil to be drained from the new compressor using the following formula: X cm3 - (Y cm3 + 20 cm3) = Q cm3
    8.
    9. Remove the drain plug from the new compressor and drain Q cm3 of oil. Fit and tighten the compressor drain plug.
    10.

  2.
  3. A new compressor is sealed and pressurized with Nitrogen gas, slowly release the sealing cap, gas pressure should be heard to release as the seal is broken.
  4.
  5. Clean compressor and mating face on front mounting plate and cylinder block.
  6.
  7. Position compressor, and install but do not fully tighten lower bolt.
  8.
  9. Position the heat shield and the compressor upper mounting bolts. Tighten the compressor upper and lower securing bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  10.
  11. Remove caps from compressor and high pressure pipe.
  12.
  13. Clean compressor high pressure pipe connection.
  14.
  15. Lubricate new 'O' ring with refrigerant oil and fit to high pressure pipe.
  16.
  17. Connect the high pressure pipe to compressor, then install and tighten the bolt to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  18.
  19. Connect the multiplug to compressor.
  20.
  21. Remove the caps from compressor and low pressure pipe.
  22.
  23. Clean the compressor low pressure pipe connection.
  24.
  25. Lubricate a new O-ring with refrigerant oil and fit to low pressure pipe.
  26.
  27. Connect the low pressure pipe to compressor, fit and tighten bolt to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  28.
  29. Clean the belt pulley -V-s and tensioner pulley running surface.
  30.
  31. Using a 3/8- square drive socket bar, raise ancillary drive belt tensioner and fit drive belt to pulleys.
  32.
  33. Fit splash shield and secure with bolts.
  34.
  35. Install the wheel and tire assembly.
  36.
  37. Replace the receiver drier.
  38.
  39. Recharge the A/C system, as outlined in this section.
  40.
  41. Connect the negative battery cable.
  42.
  43. Install the underbelly panel.
  44.

CAUTION
Refer to the applicable precautions for this system before performing the following operation. Failure to follow the warnings and cautions could result in possible personal injury or death.

  1. Properly discharge and evacuate the A/C system..
  2.
  3. Remove auxiliary drive belt, as outlined in the Engine Mechanical Section.
  4.
  5. Detach the connector.
  6.
  7. Remove 2 bolts securing air conditioning pipes to compressor and discard the O-rings. Cap or plug the lines and ports to avoid contaminating the system.

To install:

  1. A new compressor is supplied filled with a full charge (X cm3) of refrigerant oil. A calculated quantity of oil must be drained from the new compressor before fitting.
    10.

  2.
  3. Clean compressor dowels and dowel holes.
  4.
  5. Position compressor to mounting bracket and tighten bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  6.
  7. Remove the caps or plugs from compressor and pipe connections.
  8.
  9. Clean compressor and pipe connections.
  10.
  11. Lubricate new O-rings with refrigerant oil and fit to compressor.
  12.
  13. Position A/C pipes to compressor and tighten the bolts to 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm).
  14.
  15. Attach the connector to the compressor.
  16.
  17. Install the drive belt, as outlined in the Engine Mechanical Section.
