Oil Pan

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Lift the vehicle on a 4-post lift, or, on jackstands under the chassis with a jack under the axle.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Battery ground cable
     
    Engine oil dipstick
     
    Engine oil
     
    Front crossmember (8 bolts)
     

  6.  
  7. Raise the vehicle front end in order to gain clearance between engine and front axle.
  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Transmission cooler lines from connection and clips (discard O-ring)
     
    The 2 forward-facing and 4 rear-facing bolts securing the oil pan to the bell housing
     
    The 2 bolts in the oil pan recess
     
    The 3 nuts and 12 bolts securing the pan
     

  10.  
  11. Remove the oil pan by maneuvering it over the front axle.
  12.  
  13. Remove and discard the oil pan gasket.

To install:

  1. Clean all mating surfaces.
  2.  
  3. Apply RTV silicone sealant, 0.197 inch (5mm) wide, across the front cover-to-block joint and at the rear main bearing joint. Also, apply a glob of RTV to cover the ends of the seal.
  4.  
  5. Position a new gasket on the pan, making sure that the tabs are correctly located.
  6.  
  7. Position the pan, taking care to avoid disturbing the bead. Install 2 bolts to retain oil pan in place.
  8.  
  9. Install the oil pan nuts and bolts and tighten to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm) in sequence as shown.
  10.  
  11. Install the drain plug. Torque to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install cooler pipes.
  14.  
  15. Install the dipstick tube to the rocker cover.
  16.  
  17. Install the crossmember. Torque the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Lower vehicle. Connect negative battery cable.
  20.  
  21. Fill the engine with oil, start the engine and check for leaks.
  22.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Lift the vehicle on a 4-post lift, or, on jackstands under the chassis with a jack under the axle.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Battery ground cable
     
    Engine oil dipstick
     
    Engine oil
     
    Front crossmember
     

  6.  
  7. Lower the axle for clearance.
  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Transmission cooler lines
     
    The 2 forward-facing and 4 rear-facing bolts securing the oil pan to the bell housing
     
    The 2 bolts in the sump oil pan recess
     
    The 3 nuts and 12 bolts securing the pan

To install:

  1. Clean all mating surfaces.

  13. Connect all wiring.
  14.  
  15. Install the dipstick tube to the rocker cover.
  16.  
  17. Install the crossmember. Torque the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Fill the engine with oil, start the engine and check for leaks.
  20.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect battery ground.
  4.  
  5. Remove engine acoustic cover.
  6.  
  7. Drain engine oil.
  8.  
  9. Remove 3 bolts securing right side splash shield to body and remove shield.
  10.  
  11. Remove 4 nuts securing engine oil cooler to oil pan and position oil cooler aside.
  12.  
  13. Remove bolt securing dipstick tube to cylinder block.
  14.  
  15. Depress collar and remove dipstick tube from oil pan.
  16.  
  17. Remove 3 bolts securing IRD support bracket to oil pan.
  18.  
  19. Using sequence shown, and noting each bolt-s installed position, remove 10 oil pan bolts.
  20.  
  21. Release and remove oil pan from lower crankcase.

To install:

  1. Using and suitable cleaning solvent, clean oil pan and mating face on lower crankcase. DO NOT use a metal scraper on sealing surfaces.
  2.  
  3. Apply a 0.1 inch (2mm) bead of sealant STC 4600 or equivalent, along center of oil pan flange, then spread to an even film using a roller. Do not allow sealant into bolt holes.
    CAUTION
    To avoid contamination, assembly should be completed immediately after application of sealant.

  5. Position oil pan, install bolts and tighten progressively in the sequence shown to 35 Nm (26 ft. lbs.).

  7. Fit bolts securing IRD support bracket to oil pan and tighten to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Position engine oil cooler to oil pan mounting bracket, install and tighten nuts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Position dipstick tube to oil pan and cylinder block, install bolt and tighten to 7 ft. lbs. (9 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install splash shield and secure with bolts.
  14.  
  15. Fill engine with correct quantity and grade of oil.
  16.  
  17. Install engine acoustic cover.
  18.  
  19. Connect battery ground.
  20.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.

  3. Lift the vehicle on a 4-post lift, or, on safety stands under the chassis with a jack under the axle.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Battery ground cable
     
    Engine acoustic cover
     
    Transmission acoustic cover
     
    Engine oil dipstick
     
    Engine oil
     

  6.  
  7. Position a support under the front crossmember.
  8.  
  9. Lower the axle for clearance.
  10.  
  11. Remove or disconnect the following:

    O 2 sensor connectors
     
    The 3 nuts and 14 bolts securing the pan
     
    Oil Pan

  1. Clean all mating surfaces.
  2.  
  3. Apply RTV Hylosil 101 or 106, or equivalent sealant, to the oil pan. Using the illustration, the bead width and length should be:
    NOTE
    Do not spread the bead. Install the pan immediately!



    Width at A, B, C and D: 12mm
     
    Width at remaining areas: 5mm
     
    Length at A and B: 32mm
     
    Length at remaining areas: 19mm
     

  4.  
  5. Position the pan, taking care to avoid disturbing the bead.
  6.  
  7. Install the oil pan and tighten the nuts bolts to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm) in sequence as shown.
  8.  
  9. Install the drain plug. Torque to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Connect the sensors.
  12.  
  13. Install the dipstick tube to the rocker cover.
  14.  
  15. Install the covers.
  16.  
  17. Fill the engine with oil, start the engine and check for leaks.
  18.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Lift the vehicle on a 4-post lift, or, on safety stands under the chassis with a jack under the axle.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Battery ground cable
     
    Engine oil
     
    Oil dipstick tube
     
    Power steering pump
     
    Front differential
     
    Oil pickup strainer
     
    Banjo bolt from oil return line to oil pan and discard washers
     
    Banjo bolt from oil filter return line to oil pan and discard washers
     
    4 bolts attaching oil pan to bellhousing
     
    31 bolts attaching oil pan, noting the bolt lengths and locations
     

  6.  

To Install:
  1. Clean all mating surfaces.
  2.  
  3. Install a new gasket and fit oil pan to the block.
  4.  
  5. Note the bolt positions as shown, and install in the correct locations hand tight.

  6.  
  7. Install oil pan-to-bellhousing bolts and tighten the bolts to 39 ft. lbs. (53 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Using new washers, connect both banjo bolts and tighten to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the differential.
  12.  
  13. Install the oil pickup strainer.
  14.  
  15. Install the power steering pump.
  16.  
  17. Install the dipstick tube.
  18.  
  19. Connect the battery ground cable.
  20.  
  21. Fill the engine with oil.
  22.  
  23. Start the engine and check for leaks.
