Rear Main Seal

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the transmission and driveplate.
  4.  
  5. Using a suitable seal removal tool, remove the oil seal from the engine block.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Be sure both the seal location and running surface on the crankshaft are clean.
  2.  
  3. Lubricate the lip of the seal with engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Install the crankshaft seal over the end of the crankshaft.
  6.  
  7. Using a suitable seal installer, install the seal until it is flush with the end of the engine block.
  8.  
  9. Install the driveplate and tighten the mounting bolts to 63 ft. lbs. (85 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the transmission.
  12.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove automatic gearbox.
  4.  
  5. Assemble LRT-12-161 to LRT-12-199 and secure with clamp bolt.
  6.  
  7. Position LRT-12-161 and LRT-12-199 to crankshaft pulley to hold crankshaft from turning.
  8.  
  9. With assistance, remove and discard 6 bolts securing drive plate to crankshaft.
  10.  
  11. Remove drive plate (flywheel) from crankshaft.
  12.  
  13. Remove and discard 5 bolts securing crankshaft rear oil seal housing to cylinder block.
  14.  
  15. Remove crankshaft rear oil seal.
  16.  

To install:

  1. Clean cylinder block face and rear main oil seal running surface on crankshaft.
  2.  
  3. Position oil seal protector, LRT-12-061, to crankshaft.
  4.  
  5. Install the rear main oil seal onto the crankshaft. Seal must be fitted dry.
  6.  
  7. Install new Patchlok®bolts to rear main oil seal. Tighten bolts to 6 ft. lbs. (8 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Remove oil seal protector.
  10.  
  11. Clean bolt holes in crankshaft using an old drive plate bolt with two saw cuts at an angle of 45°to the bolt shank.
  12.  
  13. Clean drive plate and mating face of crankshaft.

  15. Position drive plate to crankshaft and fit new Patchlok bolts, but do not tighten at this time.
  16.  
  17. Position LRT-12-161 and LRT-12-199 to crankshaft pulley to restrain crankshaft.
  18.  
  19. With assistance, tighten bolts in the following sequence:

    Step 1 -18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)
     
    Step 2 -74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm)

  21. Remove special tool from crankshaft pulley, loosen bolt and remove LRT-12-161 from LRT-12-199.
  22.  
  23. Fit automatic gearbox.
  24.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the transmission and driveplate.
  4.  
  5. Using a suitable seal removal tool, remove the oil seal from the engine block.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Be sure both the seal location and running surface on the crankshaft are clean.
  2.  
  3. Fit a seal guide, LRT-12-095, onto crankshaft.
  4.  
  5. Install the crankshaft rear main oil seal over the end of the crankshaft. Use installer tools LRT-12-091 and LRT-99-003 to install seal squarely onto crankshaft. Install seal dry.
  6.  
  7. Remove installer tools and seal guide.
  8.  
  9. Install the driveplate and tighten the mounting bolts as follows:

    For 2000-02 models: 63 ft. lbs. (85 Nm)
     
    For 2003-04 models: 58 ft. lbs. (78 Nm)

  11. Install the transmission.
  12.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the transmission and driveplate.
  4.  
  5. Remove 12 bolts and rear oil seal housing
  6.  
  7. Remove the oil seal from the hosing.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Be sure the seal housing, locating dowels and mating surface on the block are clean.
  2.  
  3. Fit seal guides, LRT-12-179 and 217 onto a new seal and install into the housing.
  4.  
  5. Check that the cylinder head dowels are in correct position.
  6.  
  7. Install new gasket to oil seal housing.
  8.  
  9. Apply sealant to oil pan upper contact surface.
  10.  
  11. Install crankshaft guide tool LRT-12-218 to crankshaft.
  12.  
  13. Apply a thin coat of oil to seal inner lip and install seal and housing over the tool and onto the locating dowels.
  14.  
  15. Using new washers on the Torx® bolts, install 6 Torx® bolts and 6 standard bolts to housing and tighten to 9 ft. lbs. (12 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Install the drive plate and transmission.
  18.  
  19. Fill the engine with oil.
  20.  
  21. Connect battery ground cable.
  22.  
  23. Start the engine and check for leaks.
