Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Relieve fuel system pressure.
  6.  
  7. Drain the cooling system.
  8.  
  9. Remove the rocker arm covers.
  10.  
  11. Remove the 4 rocker arm shaft bolts and lift off the rocker arm shaft assemblies.
  12.  
  13. Remove the cotter pin from either end of the shaft and slide the components from the shaft, keeping them in order for reassembly.
  14.  
  15. Inspect the parts for wear or damage, and replace any suspect parts. Discard any weak springs.

To install:

  1. Reassemble the shaft and components. Note the position of the oil feed holes. Use new cotter pin(s).
  2.  
  3. Position the rocker shaft assembly on the head. Be sure that the shaft is installed with the notches at each end on the upper side. Be sure that each rocker ball stud engages its respective pushrod.
  4.  
  5. Install the bolts and tighten them, gradually, to 28 ft. lbs. (38 Nm), starting with the 2 inner, then the 2 outer bolts.
  6.

  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  6.  
  7. Drain the cooling system.
  8.  
  9. Remove the rocker arm covers.
  10.  
  11. Remove the 4 rocker arm shaft bolts, in progressive steps. Release the rocker shaft from the push rods and remove the rocker arm shaft assemblies.
    NOTE
    Be sure push rods remain located in their tappets when the rocker shaft is removed. Retain all components in their removed sequence for proper reassembly.

  13. Remove the cotter pin from either end of the shaft and slide the components from the shaft, keeping them in order for reassembly.
  14.  
  15. Inspect the parts for wear or damage, and replace any suspect parts. Discard any weak springs.

  1. Reassemble the shaft and components. Note the position of the oil feed holes. Use new cotter pin(s).
  2.  
  3. Position the rocker shaft assembly on the head. Be sure that the shaft is installed with the notches or identification groove positioned at the one o-clock position at each end on the upper side, with push rod locations of rocker arms to the right. Be sure that each rocker ball stud engages its respective pushrod.
  4.  
  5. Install the bolts and tighten them, gradually, to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm), starting with the 2 inner, then the 2 outer bolts.
  6.  
  7. Complete installation of rocker cover and components in reverse of removal procedure.
