Timing Chain Cover & Seal

Removal & Installation




NOTE
For seal replacement, see the next procedure.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Coolant
     
    Oil pan
     
    Oil pick up strainer
     
    Crankshaft pulley and drive belt tensioner
     
    Hose from the water pump
     
    Oil cooler hoses from the front cover, then plug the hoses and connections to prevent dirt from entering.
     
    Oil pressure switch and CMP sensor electrical connectors
     
    Timing cover mounting bolts, then remove the cover.

  5. Clean the gasket mating surfaces and drive out the crankshaft seal.
  6.  
  7. Clean the timing gears and turn the crankshaft until the timing mark on the crankshaft and camshaft face each other (camshaft at 6 o-clock and crankshaft at twelve o-clock).
  8.  
  9. Remove the camshaft timing gear mounting bolt.
  10.  
  11. Remove the timing gears and chain as an assembly.
  12.

  1. Assemble the timing chain and gears on a work bench, with the timing marks aligned.
  2.  
  3. Install the timing chain and gear assembly onto the engine with the timing marks facing outwards.
  4.  
  5. Install the camshaft timing gear mounting bolt and tighten to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Lubricate the new timing cover oil seal with Shell Retinax LX, or equivalent grease, ensuring that the space between seal lips is filled with grease.
  8.  
  9. Install or connect the following:

    Seal with a suitable seal driver
     
    Front cover with a new gasket and tighten the cover bolts, in the sequence shown, to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
     
    Oil pressure switch and CMP sensor electrical connectors
     
    Plugs from the oil cooler hoses
     
    Oil cooler hoses using new O-ring seals and tighten to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm)
     
    Drive belt tensioner and tighten the bolt to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm)
     
    Hose to the water pump
     
    Oil filter
     
    Crankshaft pulley and tighten the bolt 200 ft. lbs. (270 Nm).
     
    Oil pump with a new O-ring and tighten the mounting bolt to 72 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
     
    Oil pan
     
    Engine oil
     
    Coolant
     
    Negative battery cable
