Axle Shafts & Seals

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
    CAUTION
    If so equipped, before beginning, depressurize the air suspension.

  2.  
  3. Remove the center cap from the wheel.
  4.  
  5. Loosen the axle shaft nut.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheel
     
    Brake rotor shield
     
    Brake rotor
     
    ABS sensor harness from the brackets
     
    Sensor from the hub
     
    Sensor bushing
     
    4 bolts securing the hub to the carrier
     
    Axle shaft nut
     
    Drive hub
     
    Axle shaft
     
    Oil Seal
     

  8.  

To install:

  1. Clean all mating surfaces thoroughly.
  2.  
  3. Apply gear oil to the new seal-s lip and outer edge.
  4.  
  5. Drive the new seal into place.
  6.  
  7. Slide the axle shaft into place.
  8.  
  9. Apply anti-seize compound to the mating surfaces of the hub and knuckle.
  10.  
  11. Install or connect the following:

    Hub onto the shaft. Install nut, but do not tighten at this time.
     
    Hub-to-carrier bolts. Torque to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).
     
    ABS sensor bushing and sensor, coated with silicone grease
     
    Wiring harness to brackets
     
    Rotor
     
    Rotor shield
     
    Wheel
     

  12.  
  13. Lower the vehicle and torque the axle shaft nut to 360 ft. lbs. (490 Nm). Stake the nut.
  14.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support front of vehicle.
    WARNING
    Never work on or under vehicle supported only by a jack. Always use safety stands.

  4.  
  5. Remove road wheel.
  6.  
  7. Remove front brake rotor.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect ABS sensor in-line connector.
  10.  
  11. Release ABS harness from brake hose and bracket.
  12.  
  13. Remove 4 bolts holding wheel hub to steering knuckle.
  14.  
  15. Remove wheel hub and drive axle from axle housing.
  16.  
  17. With a suitable pry tool, carefully remove oil seal from axle housing.
  18.  

To install:

  1. Clean drive shaft oil seal recess, oil seal running surface, wheel hub and swivel hub mating faces.
  2.  
  3. Lubricate oil seal lip and running surface with clean differential oil.
  4.  
  5. Using seal installer tools LRT-54-012 and LRT-99-003, install new oil seal into axle housing.
  6.  
  7. Apply anti-seize compound to wheel hub and steering knuckle mating faces.
  8.  
  9. Ensure ABS harness is properly located in steering knuckle cutout.
  10.  
  11. Install drive shaft and wheel hub into axle housing. Align wheel hub with steering knuckle. Install hub bolts and tighten to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Connect ABS sensor multiplug and secure harness to bracket and brake hose.
  14.  
  15. Install front brake rotor.
  16.  
  17. Install road wheel and tighten nuts to 103 ft. lbs. (140 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Remove stands and lower vehicle.
  20.  
  21. Check differential oil level.
  22.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
    CAUTION
    Before beginning, depressurize the air suspension.


    NOTE
    If you-re not separating the hub and shaft, don-t loosen the axle shaft nut.

  3. Remove the center cap from the wheel.
  4.  
  5. Loosen the axle shaft nut.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheel
     
    Brake rotor shield
     
    ABS sensor harness from the brackets
     
    Sensor from the hub
     
    Sensor bushing
     
    4 bolts securing the hub to the carrier
     
    Axle shaft nut, if loosened
     
    Drive hub and axle shaft
     
    Seal from the axle tube
     

  8.  

To install:

  1. Clean all surfaces.
  2.  
  3. Lubricate the new seal lip and running surface with silicone grease. Drive a new seal into place.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Axle shaft into the axle tube
     
    Hub onto the shaft. Install, but don-t tighten, the nut.
     
    Hub-to-carrier bolts. Torque to 100 ft. lbs. (135 Nm).
     
    ABS sensor bushing and sensor, coated with silicone grease
     
    Wiring harness to brackets
     
    Rotor shield
     
    Wheel
     

  6.  
  7. Lower the vehicle and torque the axle shaft nut to 192 ft. lbs. (260 Nm). Stake the nut.
