Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Raise front of vehicle.
  4.  


WARNING
Do not work on or under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always support the vehicle on safety stands.

  1. Remove road wheel.
  2.  
  3. Release stake in drive shaft nut.
  4.  
  5. With an assistant applying brakes, remove and discard drive shaft hub nut.
  6.  
  7. Remove clip securing right side brake hose to support bracket, release hose from bracket. Release ABS sensor and pad wear sensor harnesses from bracket.
  8.  
  9. Remove 2 bolts securing brake caliper to hub. Release caliper from hub and tie aside.
  10.  


CAUTION
Do not allow caliper to hang on brake hose.

  1. Mark brake disc to hub relationship.
  2.  
  3. Remove 2 screws securing brake disc and remove brake disc.
  4.  
  5. Remove 2 nuts and bolts securing hub to shock absorber.
  6.  
  7. Release hub from shock absorber.
  8.  
  9. Release drive shaft from hub.
  10.  
  11. Restrain hub from rotating and remove nut from lower swivel joint.
  12.  
  13. Break taper joint using LRT-57-043.
  14.  
  15. Remove swivel hub.
  16.  

To install:

  1. Clean drive shaft.
  2.  
  3. Fit hub assembly to lower joint, fit new nut and tighten to 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Fit drive shaft to hub.
  6.  
  7. Fit hub to shock absorber, fit nuts and bolts and tighten to 151 ft. lbs. (205 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Clean brake disc to drive flange mating faces.
  10.  
  11. Fit disc to drive flange, align reference marks, fit screws and tighten to 4 ft. lbs. (5 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Clean mating faces of caliper and hub.
  14.  
  15. Position caliper to brake disc fit bolts and tighten to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Fit brake hose to abutment bracket and fit clip.
  18.  
  19. Clean ABS sensor, smear sensor with an anti-seize grease and fit sensor to hub.
  20.  


CAUTION
Ensure ABS sensor is fully located into hub, so that sensor touches pole wheel teeth.

  1. Fit ABS sensor lead to bracket.
  2.  
  3. Fit new drive shaft nut and tighten to 295 ft. lbs. (400 Nm). Stake nut to shaft.
  4.  
  5. Stake drive shaft hub nut.
  6.  
  7. Fit road wheel(s) and tighten nuts to 85 ft. lbs. (115 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Remove stands and lower vehicle.
  10.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  


CAUTION
If so equipped, before beginning, depressurize the air suspension.

  1. Remove the center cap from the wheel.
  2.  
  3. Loosen the axle shaft nut.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheel
     
    Brake rotor shield
     
    Brake rotor
     
    ABS sensor harness from the brackets
     
    Sensor from the hub
     
    Sensor bushing
     
    4 bolts securing the hub to the carrier
     
    Axle shaft nut
     
    Drive hub
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Apply anti-seize compound to the mating surfaces of the hub and knuckle.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Hub onto the shaft. Install, but don-t tighten, the nut.
     
    Hub-to-carrier bolts. Torque to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).
     
    ABS sensor bushing and sensor, coated with silicone grease
     
    Wiring harness to brackets
     
    Rotor
     
    Rotor shield
     
    Wheel
     

  4.  
  5. Lower the vehicle and torque the axle shaft nut to 360 ft. lbs. (490 Nm). Stake the nut.
  6.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove ABS sensor harness grommet from inner fender valance and disconnect multiplug.
  4.  
  5. Raise front of vehicle.
  6.  


WARNING
Do not work on or under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always support vehicle on safety stands.

  1. Remove front wheel.
  2.  
  3. Pull ABS sensor harness up through opening in wheel well.
  4.  
  5. Release harness from brackets on inner fender panel, shock tower, and front hub.
  6.  
  7. Remove drive shaft nut. Discard nut.
  8.  
  9. Remove front brake caliper and rotor.
  10.  
  11. Remove 4 bolts securing front drive hub to steering knuckle, separate hub from knuckle, then remove front wheel hub and drive shaft assembly from vehicle.
  12.  


CAUTION
Do not remove ABS sensor from hub. Hub and sensor are supplied as an assembly.

  1. Position wheel hub and drive shaft on a press. Place support beneath wheel stud heads and press drive shaft from wheel hub.
  2.  
  3. Remove drive shaft oil seal from axle casing.
  4.  

To install:

  1. Clean drive shaft oil seal recess in axle casing. Clean drive shaft splines, oil seal running surface, wheel hub, and steering knuckle mating faces. Clean ABS sensor and sensor recess.
  2.  
  3. Lubricate lip of new drive shaft oil seal and running surface of drive shaft with clean differential oil.
  4.  
  5. Use seal installer LRT-54-012 to install new oil seal to axle casing.
  6.  
  7. Position drive shaft in axle casing.
  8.  
  9. Apply anti-seize compound to wheel hub and steering knuckle mating faces.
  10.  
  11. Apply a 0.125 inch (3mm) wide bead of sealant STC 50554 around drive shaft circumference at middle beveled edge out from flange.
  12.  
  13. Ensure ABS harness is located in cutout in steering knuckle.
  14.  
  15. Fit wheel hub to drive shaft and align steering knuckle. Sealant will smear along length of splines as wheel hub is fitted to drive shaft.
  16.  
  17. Install wheel hub bolts and tighten to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Install new drive shaft nut and tighten lightly.
  20.  
  21. Install front brake rotor and caliper.
  22.  
  23. With assistance, final-tighten drive shaft nut to 360 ft. lbs. (490 Nm). Stake nut.
  24.  


NOTE
Drive shaft nut MUST be tightened before sealant has cured.

  1. Secure ABS harness to brackets and install grommet to inner fender panel.
  2.  
  3. Install road wheel and tighten nuts to 103 ft. lbs. (140 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Remove safety stands and lower vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Connect ABS sensor connector.
  8.  


CAUTION
If so equipped, before beginning, depressurize the air suspension.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the center cap from the wheel.
  4.  
  5. Loosen the axle shaft nut.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheel
     
    Brake rotor shield
     
    ABS sensor harness from the brackets
     
    Sensor from the hub
     
    Sensor bushing
     
    4 bolts securing the hub to the carrier
     
    Axle shaft nut
     
    Drive hub

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Hub onto the shaft. Install, but don-t tighten, the nut.
     
    Hub-to-carrier bolts. Torque to 100 ft. lbs. (135 Nm).
     
    ABS sensor bushing and sensor, coated with silicone grease
     
    Wiring harness to brackets
     
    Rotor shield
     
    Wheel
     

  2.  
  3. Lower the vehicle and torque the axle shaft nut to 192 ft. lbs. (260 Nm). Stake the nut.
  4.  


CAUTION
If so equipped, before beginning, depressurize the air suspension.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the center cap from the wheel.
  4.  
  5. Loosen the axle shaft nut.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheel
     
    Brake rotor shield
     
    ABS sensor harness from the brackets
     
    Sensor from the hub
     
    Sensor bushing
     
    4 bolts securing the hub to the carrier
     
    Axle shaft nut
     
    Drive hub

  8.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Hub onto the shaft. Install, but don-t tighten, the nut.
     
    Hub-to-carrier bolts. Torque to 100 ft. lbs. (135 Nm).
     
    ABS sensor bushing and sensor, coated with silicone grease
     
    Wiring harness to brackets
     
    Rotor shield
     
    Wheel
     

  2.  
  3. Lower the vehicle and torque the axle shaft nut to 192 ft. lbs. (260 Nm). Stake the nut.
  4.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
    CAUTION
    If so equipped, before beginning, depressurize the air suspension.

  2.  
  3. Remove the center cap from the wheel.
  4.  
  5. Loosen the axle shaft nut.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheel
     
    Brake rotor shield
     
    Brake rotor
     
    ABS sensor harness from the brackets
     
    Sensor from the hub
     
    Sensor bushing
     
    4 bolts securing the hub to the carrier
     
    Axle shaft nut
     
    Drive hub
     

  8.  

To install:

  1. Apply anti-seize compound to the mating surfaces of the hub and knuckle.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Hub onto the shaft. Install, but don-t tighten, the nut.
     
    Hub-to-carrier bolts. Torque to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).
     
    ABS sensor bushing and sensor, coated with silicone grease
     
    Wiring harness to brackets
     
    Rotor
     
    Rotor shield
     
    Wheel
     

  4.  
  5. Lower the vehicle and torque the axle shaft nut to 360 ft. lbs. (490 Nm). Stake the nut.
  6.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Raise front of vehicle.
    WARNING
    Do not work on or under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always support the vehicle on safety stands.

  5. Remove road wheel.
  6.  
  7. Release stake in drive shaft nut.
  8.  
  9. With an assistant applying brakes, remove and discard drive shaft hub nut.
  10.  
  11. Remove clip securing right side brake hose to support bracket, release hose from bracket. Release ABS sensor and pad wear sensor harnesses from bracket.
  12.  
  13. Remove 2 bolts securing brake caliper to hub. Release caliper from hub and tie aside.
    CAUTION
    Do not allow caliper to hang on brake hose.

  14.  
  15. Mark brake disc to hub relationship.
  16.  
  17. Remove 2 screws securing brake disc and remove brake disc.
  18.  
  19. Remove 2 nuts and bolts securing hub to shock absorber.
  20.  
  21. Release hub from shock absorber.
  22.  
  23. Release drive shaft from hub.
  24.  
  25. Restrain hub from rotating and remove nut from lower swivel joint.
  26.  
  27. Break taper joint using LRT-57-043.
  28.  
  29. Remove swivel hub.
  30.  

To install:

  1. Clean drive shaft.
  2.  
  3. Fit hub assembly to lower joint, fit new nut and tighten to 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Fit drive shaft to hub.
  6.  
  7. Fit hub to shock absorber, fit nuts and bolts and tighten to 151 ft. lbs. (205 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Clean brake disc to drive flange mating faces.
  10.  
  11. Fit disc to drive flange, align reference marks, fit screws and tighten to 4 ft. lbs. (5 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Clean mating faces of caliper and hub.
  14.  
  15. Position caliper to brake disc fit bolts and tighten to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Fit brake hose to abutment bracket and fit clip.
  18.  
  19. Clean ABS sensor, smear sensor with an anti-seize grease and fit sensor to hub.
    CAUTION
    Ensure ABS sensor is fully located into hub, so that sensor touches pole wheel teeth.

  20.  
  21. Fit ABS sensor lead to bracket.
  22.  
  23. Fit new drive shaft nut and tighten to 295 ft. lbs. (400 Nm). Stake nut to shaft.
  24.  
  25. Stake drive shaft hub nut.
  26.  
  27. Fit road wheel(s) and tighten nuts to 85 ft. lbs. (115 Nm).
  28.  
  29. Remove stands and lower vehicle.
  30.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.

    If so equipped, before beginning, depressurize the air suspension.

  3. Remove the center cap from the wheel.
  4.  
  5. Loosen the axle shaft nut.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheel
     
    Brake rotor shield
     
    Brake rotor
     
    ABS sensor harness from the brackets
     
    Sensor from the hub
     
    Sensor bushing
     
    4 bolts securing the hub to the carrier
     
    Axle shaft nut
     
    Drive hub
     

  8.  

To install:

  3. Install or connect the following:

    Hub onto the shaft. Install, but don-t tighten, the nut.
     
    Hub-to-carrier bolts. Torque to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).

    Wiring harness to brackets
     
    Rotor
     
    Rotor shield
     
    Wheel
     

  4.  
  5. Lower the vehicle and torque the axle shaft nut to 360 ft. lbs. (490 Nm). Stake the nut.
  6.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.

  3. Remove ABS sensor harness grommet from inner fender valance and disconnect connector.
  4.  
  5. Raise front of vehicle.
    WARNING

  7. Remove front wheel.
  8.  
  9. Pull ABS sensor harness up through opening in wheel well.
  10.  
  11. Release harness from brackets on inner fender panel, shock tower, and front hub.
  12.  
  13. Remove drive shaft nut. Discard nut.
  14.  
  15. Remove front brake caliper and rotor.
  16.  
  17. Remove 4 bolts securing front drive hub to steering knuckle, separate hub from knuckle, then remove front wheel hub and drive shaft assembly from vehicle.
    CAUTION
    Do not remove ABS sensor from hub. Hub and sensor are supplied as an assembly.

  18.  
  19. Position wheel hub and drive shaft on a press. Place support beneath wheel stud heads and press drive shaft from wheel hub.
  20.  
  21. Remove drive shaft oil seal from axle casing.
  22.  

To install:

  1. Clean drive shaft oil seal recess in axle casing. Clean drive shaft splines, oil seal running surface, wheel hub, and steering knuckle mating faces. Clean ABS sensor and sensor recess.
  2.  
  3. Lubricate lip of new drive shaft oil seal and running surface of drive shaft with clean differential oil.

  5. Use seal installer LRT-54-012 to install new oil seal to axle casing.
  6.  
  7. Position drive shaft in axle casing.

  23. With assistance, final-tighten drive shaft nut to 360 ft. lbs. (490 Nm). Stake nut.
    NOTE
    Drive shaft nut MUST be tightened before sealant has cured.

  24.  
  25. Secure ABS harness to brackets and install grommet to inner fender panel.
  26.  
  27. Install road wheel and tighten nuts to 103 ft. lbs. (140 Nm).
  28.  
  29. Remove safety stands and lower vehicle.
  30.  
  31. Connect ABS sensor connector.
  32.  


CAUTION
If so equipped, before beginning, depressurize the air suspension.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.

  4.  
  5. Loosen the axle shaft nut.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    4 bolts securing the hub to the carrier
     
    Axle shaft nut
     
    Drive hub

  8.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Hub onto the shaft. Install, but don-t tighten, the nut.
     
    Hub-to-carrier bolts. Torque to 100 ft. lbs. (135 Nm).
     
    ABS sensor bushing and sensor, coated with silicone grease
     
    Wiring harness to brackets
     
    Rotor shield
     
    Wheel
     

  2.  
  3. Lower the vehicle and torque the axle shaft nut to 192 ft. lbs. (260 Nm). Stake the nut.
