Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle and remove the front wheels.
  4.  
  5. Remove the axle hub nut.
  6.  
  7. Unbolt the brake caliper and position it aside, leaving the hose attached.
  8.  
  9. Remove the brake rotor.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the ABS sensor lead, then remove the ABS sensor from the hub.
  12.  
  13. Remove and discard the nut attaching the track rod ball joint to the steering arm.
  14.  
  15. Install an M14 nut to the ball pin so it is flush with the end of the pin.
  16.  
  17. Using a separator, disconnect the ball pin from the steering arm.
  18.  
  19. Remove the M14 nut.
  20.  
  21. Disconnect the height sensor link.
  22.  
  23. Loosen the lower arm-to-sub-frame bolt a quarter turn.
  24.  
  25. Remove the lower arm ball joint-to-hub nut.
  26.  
  27. Release the lower ball joint and disconnect the lower arm from the hub.
  28.  
  29. Loosen the tie rod-to-sub-frame bolt one quarter turn.
  30.  
  31. Remove the tie rod-to-ball joint nut.
  32.  
  33. Disconnect the tie rod from the ball joint.
  34.  
  35. Install tool set LRT-60-030 to the front hub.

  37. Tighten the center screw on the tool to press the driveshaft from the flange.
  38.  
  39. Remove the tool set.
  40.  
  41. Install collar LRT-54-026 to the driveshaft inside joint.
  42.  
  43. Using levers, release the driveshaft from the hub.
  44.  
  45. Remove the driveshaft.
  46.  

To install:

  1. Clean driveshaft and differential opening.
  2.  
  3. Install new circlip to the driveshaft.
  4.  
  5. Lubricate the oil seal lip with clean differential oil.
  6.  
  7. Install the driveshaft ensuring the circlip is engaged.
  8.  
  9. Clean the driveshaft and flange splines and lightly lubricate the splines.
  10.  
  11. Position the drive shaft in the hub.
  12.  
  13. Reinstall the tool set to the front hub.
  14.  
  15. Tighten the tool until the driveshaft is seated in the drive flange.
  16.  
  17. Using new nuts, install the ball joint to steering arm, tie rod to ball joint and ball joint to hub. Tighten all nuts to 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Install new bolts in lower arm to sub-frame and tie rod to sub-frame, but do not tighten.
  20.  
  21. Connect height sensor link.
  22.  
  23. Install ABS sensor after coating it with anti-seize.
  24.  
  25. Attach ABS sensor lead.
  26.  
  27. Install the brake rotor.
  28.  
  29. Install a new axle hub nut and tighten to 311 ft. lbs. (420 Nm).
  30.  
  31. Stake the nut to the shaft.
  32.  
  33. Install the brake caliper.
  34.  
  35. Install the wheels and lower the vehicle.
  36.  
  37. Tighten the tie rod-to-sub-frame and lower arm-to-sub-frame bolts to 121 ft. lbs. (165 Nm), plus an additional 90 degrees.
  38.  
  39. Check the front wheel alignment.
  40.  

Left Side
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect battery ground lead.
  4.  
  5. Raise front of vehicle.
    WARNING
    Do not work on or under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always support the vehicle on safety stands.

  6.  
  7. Remove road wheel.
  8.  
  9. Remove underbelly panel.
  10.  
  11. Remove 3 bolts and remove splash shield.
  12.  
  13. Release stake from drive shaft nut.
  14.  
  15. With assistant depressing the brake pedal, remove and discard the drive shaft nut.
  16.  
  17. Remove clip securing brake hose and release hose from shock absorber bracket.
  18.  
  19. Release ABS sensor harness and brake hose from shock absorber.
  20.  
  21. Release ABS sensor from hub.
  22.  
  23. Remove 2 bolts securing brake caliper to hub. Release caliper from hub and tie aside.
    CAUTION
    Do not allow caliper to hang on brake hose.

  25. Remove 2 bolts securing shock absorber to hub.
  26.  
  27. Release hub from shock absorber.
  28.  
  29. Release drive shaft from hub.
  30.  
  31. Position container to catch oil spillage
  32.  
  33. Secure LRT-54-026 to drive shaft inboard joint. Using a suitable lever, release drive shaft from gearbox.
  34.  
  35. Remove drive shaft.
  36.  
  37. Remove and discard circlip from drive shaft.
  38.  

To install:

  1. Inspect gearbox seal for signs of wear or damage.
  2.  
  3. Wipe drive shaft ends, gearbox oil seal and hub.
  4.  
  5. Lubricate oil seal running surfaces.
  6.  
  7. Install new circlip to drive shaft.
  8.  
  9. Install drive shaft ensuring circlip is fully engaged.
    CAUTION
    Drive shaft must be fitted with care to prevent damage to gearbox oil seal.

  10.  
  11. Position drive shaft in hub.
  12.  
  13. Install new hub nut but do not tighten at this stage.
  14.  
  15. Install hub to shock absorber, fit nuts and bolts and tighten to 150 ft. lbs. (205 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Position caliper to brake disc fit bolts and tighten to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Clean ABS sensor and mating face.
  20.  
  21. Lubricate ABS sensor with anti-seize grease.
  22.  
  23. Install ABS sensor .
    CAUTION
    Ensure ABS sensor is fully located into hub, so that sensor touches reluctor ring.

  24.  
  25. Position ABS harness and brake hose in bracket and secure with clip.
  26.  
  27. Install splash shield and secure with bolts.
  28.  
  29. Tighten front hub nut to 295 ft. lbs. (400 Nm).
  30.  
  31. Stake front hub nut.
  32.  
  33. Install road wheel(s) and tighten nuts to 85 ft. lbs. (115 Nm).
  34.  
  35. Check and top up oil level as required.
  36.  
  37. Install underbelly panel.
  38.  
  39. Remove stands and lower vehicle.
  40.  
  41. Connect the negative battery cable.
  42.  

Right Side
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect battery ground lead.
  4.  
  5. Raise front of vehicle.
    WARNING
    Do not work on or under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always support the vehicle on safety stands.

  7. Remove road wheel.
  8.  
  9. Remove underbelly panel.
  10.  
  11. Remove 3 bolts securing right side splash shield to body and remove shield.
  12.  
  13. Release stake from drive shaft nut.
  14.  
  15. With assistant depressing the brake pedal, remove and discard the drive shaft nut.
  16.  
  17. Remove clip securing brake hose and release hose from shock absorber bracket.
  18.  
  19. Release ABS sensor harness and brake hose from shock absorber.
  20.  
  21. Release ABS sensor from hub.
  22.  
  23. Remove 2 bolts securing brake caliper to hub. Release caliper from hub and tie aside.
    CAUTION
    Do not allow caliper to hang on brake hose.

  25. Remove 2 bolts securing shock absorber to hub.
  26.  
  27. Release hub from shock absorber.
  28.  
  29. Release drive shaft from hub.
  30.  
  31. Position container to catch oil spillage.
  32.  
  33. Secure LRT-54-026 to drive shaft inboard joint. Using a suitable lever, release drive shaft from gearbox.
  34.  
  35. Remove drive shaft.
    CAUTION
    Care must be taken not to damage oil seal when removing drive shaft from gearbox

  36.  
  37. Remove and discard circlip from drive shaft.
  38.  

To install:

  1. Inspect gearbox seal for signs of wear or damage.

  3. Wipe drive shaft ends, gearbox oil seal and hub.
  4.  
  5. Lubricate oil seal running surfaces.

  7. Install new circlip to drive shaft.

  13. Install new hub nut but do not tighten at this stage.

  15. Install hub to shock absorber, fit nuts and bolts and tighten to 150 ft. lbs. (205 Nm).

  17. Position caliper to brake disc fit bolts and tighten to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Clean ABS sensor and mating face.
  20.  
  21. Lubricate ABS sensor with anti-seize grease.
  22.  
  23. Install ABS sensor .
    CAUTION

  25. Position ABS harness and brake hose in bracket and secure with clip.
  26.  
  27. Install splash shield and secure with bolts.
  28.  
  29. Tighten front hub nut to 295 ft. lbs. (400 Nm).

  31. Stake front hub nut.
  32.  
  33. Install road wheel(s) and tighten nuts to 85 ft. lbs. (115 Nm).
  34.  
  35. Check and top up oil level as required.
  36.  
  37. Install underbelly panel.
  38.  
  39. Remove stands and lower vehicle.
  40.  
  41. Connect the negative battery cable.
