Coil Springs

The Discovery models are equipped with a coil spring suspension. The Range Rover and Discovery Series II models are equipped with an air spring suspension.

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support front of vehicle, supporting vehicle under chassis.
  4.  


WARNING
Do not work on or under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always use safety stands.

  1. Remove front road wheels.
  2.  
  3. Support weight of front axle.
  4.  
  5. Remove 2 nuts securing anti-roll bar links to front axle and disconnect links from axle.
  6.  
  7. Remove 2 bolts securing each shock absorber to front axle.
  8.  


WARNING
Ensure axle cannot move when shock absorber is disconnected. Shock absorbers limit downward motion of the axle. If axle is not restrained, disconnecting shock absorber will allow unrestricted movement which may cause personal injury or damage to vehicle or equipment.

  1. Low the front axle.
  2.  


CAUTION
Ensure brake hoses and ABS sensor harnesses are not damaged when front axle is lowered.

  1. Release and remove the front coil spring from the shock absorber.
  2.  

To install:

  1. Clean front spring seats.
  2.  
  3. Position front spring, with close coil at the top end, over the shock absorber and located in the cutout in the lower spring seat.
  4.  
  5. Ensure both front springs are correctly located in the spring seats, then raise the front axle. Install shock absorber-to-axle bolts and tighten to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Ensure washer is in place on lower ball joint of each anti-roll bar link, then connect lower ball joints to axle. Tighten ball joint nuts to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install front road wheels. Tighten nuts to 103 ft. lbs. (140 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Remove safety stands and lower the vehicle.
  12.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the sway bar end links.
  6.  
  7. Remove the shock absorber-to-axle bolts.
  8.  
  9. Slowly lower the axle to relieve the spring tension. DO NOT STRETCH THE BRAKE HOSE!
  10.  
  11. Remove the spring.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Install the spring in the upper seat.
  2.  
  3. Raise the axle until the spring is seated in the lower spring seat.
  4.  
  5. Connect the end links.
  6.  
  7. Install the shock absorber.
  8.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
