Lower Control Arms

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support vehicle chassis with safety stands.
  4.  
  5. Remove the front wheels.
  6.  
  7. Loosen the lower arm-to-sub-frame bolt a quarter turn.
  8.  
  9. Remove the height sensor link.
  10.  
  11. Remove the lower arm ball joint-to-hub nut.
  12.  
  13. Release the lower ball joint and disconnect the lower arm from the hub.
  14.  
  15. Remove the lower arm to sub-frame bolt and remove the lower arm.
  16.  

To install:

  1. Clean the ball joint and mating surface.
  2.  
  3. Install the ball joint to the hub and tighten the nut to 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Connect the height sensor link.
  6.  
  7. Replace the bolts attaching the lower arm to the sub-frame but do not tighten.
  8.  
  9. Install the front wheels and lower the vehicle.
  10.  
  11. Tighten the tie rod-to-sub-frame and lower arm-to-sub-frame bolts to 121 ft. lbs. (165 Nm), plus an additional 90 degrees.
  12.  
  13. Check the front wheel alignment.
  14.  

Front
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Raise front of vehicle.
  4.  


WARNING
Do not work on or under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always support the vehicle on safety stands.

  1. Remove road wheel.
  2.  
  3. Remove underbelly panel.
  4.  
  5. Release stake in drive shaft nuts.
  6.  
  7. With an assistant applying brakes, remove and discard drive shaft hub nut.
  8.  
  9. Remove clip securing brake hose to bracket on shock absorber.
  10.  
  11. Release ABS sensor harness and brake hose from shock absorber.
  12.  
  13. Release ABS sensor from hub.
  14.  
  15. Remove 2 bolts securing brake caliper to hub. Release caliper from hub and tie aside.
  16.  


CAUTION
Do not allow caliper to hang on brake hose.

  1. Remove 2 nuts and bolts securing hub to shock absorber.
  2.  
  3. Release drive shaft from hub.
  4.  
  5. Tie drive shaft aside.
  6.  
  7. Remove nut securing lower arm ball joint, discard nut.
  8.  
  9. Break taper joint using LRT-57-043.
  10.  
  11. Remove hub assembly.
  12.  
  13. Remove 2 bolts securing lower control arm rear bushing housing.
  14.  
  15. Remove bolt securing lower control arm front mounting.
  16.  
  17. Remove lower control arm.
  18.  
  19. Remove nut from rear mounting, remove snubber washer and remove mounting.
  20.  


CAUTION
Note orientation of snubber washer.

To install:

  1. Clean rear mounting mating faces.
  2.  
  3. Install rear mounting and snubber rubber to lower arm. Fit nut, but do not tighten at this stage.
  4.  

Ensure correct orientation of snubber washer. Ensure that 'OUT' is visible on snubber washer when fitted.

  1. Position lower arm and align to subframe fit bolt, but do not tighten at this stage.
  2.  
  3. Clean hub to lower arm ball joint mating faces.
  4.  
  5. Install hub assembly to lower joint, fit new nut and tighten to 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Clean drive shaft and flange splines.
  8.  
  9. Install drive shaft to hub.
  10.  
  11. Install new hub nut, but do not tighten at this stage.
  12.  
  13. Install hub to shock absorber. Fit nuts and bolts and tighten to 151 ft. lbs. (205 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Position caliper to brake disc fit bolts and tighten to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Install brake hose to bracket on shock absorber and secure with clip.
  18.  
  19. Clean ABS sensor, smear sensor with an anti-seize grease and fit sensor to hub.
  20.  

Ensure ABS sensor is fully located into hub, so that sensor touches pole wheel teeth.

  1. Install ABS sensor lead to bracket.
  2.  
  3. Tighten lower arm front bush bolts to 140 ft. lbs. (190 Nm).
  4.  

Nuts and bolts must be tightened with weight of vehicle on suspension.

  1. Align bush housings, ensuring roll pin is correctly located. Install bolts and tighten to 77 ft. lbs. (105 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Tighten rear bush housing nut to 103 ft. lbs. (140 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install new drive shaft nut and tighten to 295 ft. lbs. (400 Nm). Stake nut to shaft.
  6.  
  7. Install underbelly panel.
  8.  
  9. Install road wheel(s) and tighten nuts to 85 ft. lbs. (115 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Remove stands and lower vehicle.
  12.  

Bushing Replacement



Rear Bushing
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Raise front of vehicle.
  4.  

Do not work on or under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always support the vehicle on safety stands.

  1. Remove nut securing lower control arm rear bush housing and remove snubber rubber.
  2.  

Note orientation of snubber washer.

  1. Remove 2 bolts securing lower control arm rear bush housing.
  2.  
  3. Release bush locating pin from body and remove bush housing.
  4.  

To install:

  1. Clean lower control arm and bush housing mating faces.
  2.  
  3. Fit bush housing to lower arm and locate dowel into body.
  4.  
  5. Fit bolts securing lower arm rear bush housings and tighten to 77 ft. lbs. (105 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Fit snubber rubber and nut, but do not tighten at this stage.
  8.  

Ensure correct orientation of snubber washer. Ensure that 'OUT' is visible on snubber washer when fitted.

  1. Tighten rear bush housing nut to 103 ft. lbs. (140 Nm).
  2.  

Nuts and bolts must be tightened with the weight of the vehicle on the suspension.

  1. Remove stand and lower vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Check front wheel alignment.
  4.  

Front Bushing
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove underbelly panel.
  4.  
  5. Raise front of vehicle.
  6.  


WARNING
Do not work on or under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always support the vehicle on safety stands.

  1. Remove 2 bolts securing rear bush housing to rear beam.
  2.  
  3. Release rear bush housing from body dowel.
  4.  
  5. Remove bolt securing lower arm front mounting.
  6.  
  7. Release lower arm front mounting from rear beam.
  8.  
  9. Using LRT-60-008 and adapters remove lower arm bush.

To install:

  1. Ensure bush bore in hub is clean.
  2.  
  3. Using LRT-60-008 fit new bush into lower arm.
  4.  
  5. Align lower arm to rear beam and fit bolt, but do not tighten at this stage.
  6.  
  7. Align rear bush housing to body dowel and fit bolts, but do not tighten at this stage.
  8.  
  9. Tighten rear bush housing bolts to 77 ft. lbs. (105 Nm).
  10.  

Nuts and bolts must be tightened with the weight of the vehicle on the suspension.

  1. Tighten lower arm front bush bolts to 140 ft. lbs. (190 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Fit underbelly panel.
  4.  
  5. Remove stands and lower vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Check and, if necessary, adjust wheel alignment.
  8.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Raise front of vehicle.
  4.  

Do not work on or under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always support the vehicle on safety stands.

  1. Remove the lower control arm
  2.  
  3. Using LRT-60-031 and adapters remove lower arm bush.
  4.  

To install:

  1. Clean lower control arm and bush housing mating faces.
  2.  
  3. Using LRT-60-031 and adapters install lower arm bush.
  4.  
  5. Install the lower control arm.
  6.  
  7. Check front wheel alignment.
  8.
