Removal & Installation




NOTE
Each ball joint can be replaced up to 3 times before the yoke bore becomes over-sized. At each replacement, the yoke should be marked. Check for yellow paint marks about 0.5 inch (12mm) wide. If 3 marks are found, axle case must be replaced.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support vehicle chassis with safety stands.
  4.  
  5. Support front axle on stands.
  6.  
  7. Remove 2 nuts securing anti-roll bar lower links to front axle. Use a 16mm wrench to prevent link joint from turning.
  8.  
  9. Remove 2 lower bolts securing each front shock absorber to axle.
  10.  
  11. Remove 8 bolts and remove crossmember.
  12.  
  13. Remove the bolt securing the brake hose and ABS sensor harness bracket to the axle.
  14.  
  15. Lower the front axle. Release the front spring from the shock absorber and remove the spring.
  16.  
  17. To tool LRT-54-008, fit LRT-54-008/4, LRT-54-008/5 and LRT-54-008/22 as illustrated.

  19. Press upper ball joint from axle. When ram lead screw reach end of its stroke, retract lead screw and screw the ram further into the tool. Repeat operation until ball joint is freed from axle.

  21. Dismantle the tool set.

To install:

  1. Clean the upper ball joint location and surrounding area of axle yoke thoroughly.
  2.  
  3. Place a 0.5 inch (12mm) yellow paint stripe on the axle yoke, adjacent to the bore.
  4.  
  5. Place tool LRT-54-008 with LRT-54-021 (attached with screw), then fit tool LRT-54-008/7 to tool and position over ball joint and axle.
  6.  
  7. Align the tool assembly and press the ball joint into the axle yoke. Do not install nut at this time.
    CAUTION
    Damage to ball joint boot will result if tool is not correctly aligned during installation process.

  9. Remove tools from axle yoke.
  10.  
  11. Clean the spring seats and install the coil springs over shock absorber. Tighten shock absorber bolts to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install crossmember and tighten bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Connect the anti-roll bar links to axle. Torque the nuts to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Install steering knuckle. Tighten upper ball joint nut to 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm)

  19. The remainder of assembly is the reverse of disassembly.

  3. Remove the swivel hub.
  4.  
  5. Using a ball joint forcing tool, such as LRT-54-008/4 and /5, remove the ball joint.

To install:

  1. Clean the yoke thoroughly.
  2.  
  3. Place a yellow paint stripe on the yoke adjacent to the bore.
  4.  
  5. Place a forcing tool, such as LRT-54-008-8, on the yoke.
  6.  
  7. Place base LRT-54-008/7 on the yoke. Position the ball joint and align the tool.
  8.  
  9. Press the ball joint into the yoke.
  10.
