Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Raise front of vehicle.
  4.  


WARNING
Do not work on or under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always support the vehicle on safety stands.

  1. Remove road wheel.
  2.  
  3. Release stake in drive shaft nut.
  4.  
  5. With an assistant applying brakes, remove and discard drive shaft hub nut.
  6.  
  7. Remove clip securing right side brake hose to support bracket, release hose from bracket. Release ABS sensor and pad wear sensor harnesses from bracket.
  8.  
  9. Remove 2 bolts securing brake caliper to hub. Release caliper from hub and tie aside.
  10.  


CAUTION
Do not allow caliper to hang on brake hose.

  1. Mark brake disc to hub relationship.
  2.  
  3. Remove 2 screws securing brake disc and remove brake disc.
  4.  
  5. Remove 2 nuts and bolts securing hub to shock absorber.
  6.  
  7. Release hub from shock absorber.
  8.  
  9. Release drive shaft from hub.
  10.  
  11. Restrain hub from rotating and remove nut from lower swivel joint.
  12.  
  13. Break taper joint using LRT-57-043.
  14.  
  15. Remove swivel hub.
  16.  


NOTE
Do not carry out further dismantling if component is removed for access only.

  1. Remove 3 bolts securing brake disc shield.
  2.  
  3. Position hub assembly to press, support on tools LRT-54-017 and press out drive flange using tool LRT-54-014.
  4.  
  5. Remove brake disc shield.
  6.  


NOTE
Outer bearing track will remain on drive flange.

  1. Remove bearing sealing plate from inner track.
  2.  
  3. Position drive flange in a vice.
  4.  
  5. Clamp both halves of a suitable bearing separator around inner track ensuring that inner lip fits in groove on inner track.
  6.  


NOTE
From 2002 model year, the groove in the inner track was deleted. To remove the inner track, clamp the separator around the bearing inner track surface.

  1. Using tool LRT-99-500 and thrust pad LRT-54-014 withdraw inner track from drive flange.
  2.  
  3. Remove circlip from bearing.
  4.  
  5. Position hub to press and press out bearing using tool LRT-54-015 and LRT-54-017, discard bearing.
  6.  


CAUTION
Never re-use existing bearing.

To install:

  1. Clean hub and drive flange.
  2.  
  3. Support hub on tool LRT-54-016 and press in new bearing using LRT-54-015.
  4.  
  5. Fit circlip to hub.
  6.  
  7. Fit brake disc shield, fit bolts and tighten to 6.5 ft. lbs. (8.5 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Support bearing on tool LRT-54-015 and press drive flange into bearing using LRT-54-014.
  10.  
  11. Clean drive shaft.
  12.  
  13. Fit hub assembly to lower joint, fit new nut and tighten to 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Fit drive shaft to hub.
  16.  
  17. Fit hub to shock absorber, fit nuts and bolts and tighten to 151 ft. lbs. (205 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Clean brake disc to drive flange mating faces.
  20.  
  21. Fit disc to drive flange, align reference marks, fit screws and tighten to 4 ft. lbs. (5 Nm).
  22.  
  23. Clean mating faces of caliper and hub.
  24.  
  25. Position caliper to brake disc fit bolts and tighten to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).
  26.  
  27. Fit brake hose to abutment bracket and fit clip.
  28.  
  29. Clean ABS sensor, smear sensor with an anti-seize grease and fit sensor to hub.
  30.  


CAUTION
Ensure ABS sensor is fully located into hub, so that sensor touches pole wheel teeth.

  1. Fit ABS sensor lead to bracket.
  2.  
  3. Fit new drive shaft nut and tighten to 295 ft. lbs. (400 Nm). Stake nut to shaft.
  4.  
  5. Stake drive shaft hub nut.
  6.  
  7. Fit road wheel(s) and tighten nuts to 85 ft. lbs. (115 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Remove stands and lower vehicle.
  10.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle and remove the front wheels.
  4.  
  5. Unbolt the brake caliper and position it aside, leaving the hose attached.
  6.  
  7. Remove the dust cap.
  8.  
  9. Remove the circlip and shim from driveshaft.
  10.  
  11. Remove the 5 bolts, then remove the driving member and joint washer.
  12.  
  13. Bend back the lockwasher tabs, then remove the locknut and washer.
  14.  
  15. Remove the hub adjusting nut.
  16.  
  17. Remove the spacing washer.
  18.  
  19. Remove the hub and brake disc assembly with bearings.
  20.  
  21. Remove the outer bearing.
  22.  
  23. Matchmark the hub to the brake disc, then remove the 5 hub-to-brake disk attaching bolts and separate the hub from the brake disc.
  24.  
  25. Remove the grease seal and inner bearing from the hub and discard the seal.
  26.  
  27. Using a punch and hammer, drive out the inner and outer bearing races.
  28.  
  29. Clean the hub of any old grease, and dry it.
  30.

To install:

  1. Using a suitable bearing driver, install the inner and outer bearing races.
  2.  
  3. Pack the hub inner bearing with grease and install.
  4.  
  5. Using a suitable seal driver, install the seal until it is flush with the rear face of the hub. Apply grease between the seal lips.
  6.  
  7. Align the brake disc-to-hub matchmarks, apply Loctite® 270 to the mounting bolts and tighten to 54 ft. lbs. (73 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Grease and install the outer bearing to the hub.
  10.  
  11. Clean the stub axle and driveshaft
  12.  
  13. Install the hub assembly onto the axle and place the spacing washer .
  14.  
  15. Install the hub adjusting nut and tighten to 45 ft. lbs. (61 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Loosen the adjusting nut 90°, then tighten to 35 inch lbs. (4 Nm). This will give the required hub end-float of 0.0004 inch (0.010mm)
  18.  
  19. Install a new lockwasher and locknut.
  20.  
  21. Tighten the locknut to 45 ft. lbs. (61 Nm).
  22.  
  23. Fold the tab over the lockwasher to secure the adjusting nut and locknut.
  24.  
  25. Install driving member with a new joint washer and tighten the hub retaining bolts to 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm).
  26.  
  27. Install the original driveshaft shim and secure the shim with a circlip.
  28.  
  29. Check the driveshaft end-play by mounting a dial gauge as shown.
  30.  
  31. Install a suitable bolt to the threaded end of the driveshaft. Move the driveshaft in and out noting the dial gauge reading. The end-play should be between 0.0032-0.0098 inch (0.08-0.25mm).
  32.  
  33. If out of specification, remove the circlip, measure the shim thickness and install an appropriate shim to give required end-play.
  34.  
  35. Remove the bolt from the driveshaft, install the circlip and dust cap.
  36.  
  37. Install the brake caliper and tighten the mounting bolts to 60 ft. lbs. (82 Nm).
  38.  
  39. Install the wheels, lower the vehicle and tighten the lug nuts to 93 ft. lbs. (126 Nm).
  40.  
  41. Operate the brake pedal to locate brake pads before taking vehicle for a road test.
  42.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle and remove the front wheels.
  4.  
  5. Remove the axle hub nut.
  6.  
  7. Unbolt the brake caliper and position it aside, leaving the hose attached.
  8.  
  9. Remove the brake rotor.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the ABS sensor lead, then remove the ABS sensor from the hub.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the height sensor link.
  14.  
  15. Loosen the lower arm-to-subframe bolt a quarter turn.
  16.  
  17. Remove the lower arm ball joint-to-hub nut.
  18.  
  19. Release the lower ball joint and disconnect the lower arm from the hub.
  20.  
  21. Loosen the tie rod-to-subframe bolt one quarter turn.
  22.  
  23. Remove the tie rod-to-ball joint nut.
  24.  
  25. Disconnect the tie rod from the ball joint.
  26.  
  27. Remove and discard the nut attaching the track rod ball joint to the steering arm.
  28.  
  29. Install an M14 nut to the ball pin so it is flush with the end of the pin.
  30.  
  31. Using a separator, disconnect the ball pin from the steering arm.
  32.  
  33. Remove the M14 nut.
  34.  
  35. Install tool set LRT-60-030 to the front hub.
  36.  
  37. Tighten the center screw on the tool to press the driveshaft from the flange.
  38.  
  39. Remove the tool set.
  40.  
  41. Remove the bolts attaching the hub to the damper and remove the hub.
  42.  
  43. Remove the brake shield from the hub.
  44.  
  45. Install mounting pins LRT-60-033/3 to the caliper mounting holes in the hub.
  46.  
  47. Fit adapter LRT-60-033/5 to the drive flange.
  48.  
  49. Fit plate LRT-6-033/2 to the mounting pin, then fit LRT-60-033/4 over the steering arm and fit to the plate.
  50.  
  51. Screw ram LRT-60-033/1 into the plate and press the drive flange from the hub.
  52.  
  53. Remove plate and pin from hub.
  54.  
  55. Remove and discard the circlip.
  56.  
  57. Fit adapter LRT-60-033/6 to the bearing. Reinstall the plate and the pin and press the bearing from the hub.
  58.  
  59. Remove the bearing race from the drive flange with a bearing separator.

To install:

  1. Clean the hub and drive flange surfaces.
  2.  
  3. Position anvil LRT-60-033/10 on a hydraulic press bed.
  4.  
  5. Place the hub over the anvil.
  6.  
  7. Insert stud/bearing in hub about half way in.
  8.  
  9. Press bearing into the hub using adapter LRT-6-033/12.
  10.  
  11. Install a new circlip.
  12.  
  13. Fit bearing support LRT-60-033/11 to the anvil and press the drive flange into the bearing using adapter LRT-60-033/12.
  14.  
  15. Remove all tools
  16.  
  17. Install the brake shield.
  18.  
  19. Clean the hub-to-damper mating surfaces and the driveshaft and drive flange splines.
  20.  
  21. Lightly lubricate the splines.
  22.  
  23. Position the hub assembly and install the upper bolt.
  24.  
  25. Install the drive shaft to the hub, align the hub and install the lower bolt.
  26.  
  27. Tighten the upper and lower bolts to 184 ft. lbs. (250 Nm).
  28.  
  29. Using the same tools as in removal, install the driveshaft into the drive flange.
  30.  
  31. Using new nuts, install the ball joint to steering arm, tie rod to ball joint and ball joint to hub. Tighten all nuts to 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm).
  32.  
  33. Install new bolts in lower arm to subframe and tie rod to subframe, but do not tighten.
  34.  
  35. Connect height sensor link.
  36.  
  37. Install ABS sensor after coating it with anti-sieze.
  38.  
  39. Attach ABS sensor lead.
  40.  
  41. Install the brake rotor.
  42.  
  43. Install a new axle hub nut and tighten to 311 ft. lbs. (420 Nm).
  44.  
  45. Stake the nut to the shaft.
  46.  
  47. Install the brake caliper.
  48.  
  49. Install the road wheels and lower the vehicle.
  50.  
  51. Tighten the tie rod-to-subframe and lower arm-to-subframe bolts to 121 ft. lbs. (165 Nm), plus an additional 90 degrees.
  52.  
  53. Check the front wheel alignment.
  54.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle and remove the front wheels.
  4.  
  5. Unbolt the brake caliper and position it aside, leaving the hose attached.
  6.  
  7. Remove the dust cap.
  8.  
  9. Remove the circlip and shim from driveshaft.

  11. Remove the 5 bolts, then remove the driving member and joint washer.

  18.  
  19. Remove 2 nuts and bolts securing hub to shock absorber.
  20.  
  21. Release hub from shock absorber.
  22.  
  23. Release drive shaft from hub.
  24.  
  25. Restrain hub from rotating and remove nut from lower swivel joint.
  26.  
  27. Break taper joint using LRT-57-043.
  28.  
  29. Remove swivel hub.
    NOTE
    Do not carry out further dismantling if component is removed for access only.

  31. Remove 3 bolts securing brake disc shield.
  32.  
  33. Position hub assembly to press, support on tools LRT-54-017 and press out drive flange using tool LRT-54-014.
  34.  
  35. Remove brake disc shield.
    NOTE
    Outer bearing track will remain on drive flange.

  37. Remove bearing sealing plate from inner track.
  38.  
  39. Position drive flange in a vice.
  40.

  43. Using tool LRT-99-500 and thrust pad LRT-54-014 withdraw inner track from drive flange.

  45. Remove circlip from bearing.
  46.  
  47. Position hub to press and press out bearing using tool LRT-54-015 and LRT-54-017, discard bearing.
    CAUTION

To install:

  1. Clean hub and drive flange.
  2.  
  3. Support hub on tool LRT-54-016 and press in new bearing using LRT-54-015.
  4.  
  5. Fit circlip to hub.
  6.  
  7. Fit brake disc shield, fit bolts and tighten to 6.5 ft. lbs. (8.5 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Support bearing on tool LRT-54-015 and press drive flange into bearing using LRT-54-014.
  10.  
  11. Clean drive shaft.
  12.  
  13. Fit hub assembly to lower joint, fit new nut and tighten to 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Fit drive shaft to hub.
  16.  
  17. Fit hub to shock absorber, fit nuts and bolts and tighten to 151 ft. lbs. (205 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Clean brake disc to drive flange mating faces.
  20.  
  21. Fit disc to drive flange, align reference marks, fit screws and tighten to 4 ft. lbs. (5 Nm).
  22.  
  23. Clean mating faces of caliper and hub.
  24.  
  25. Position caliper to brake disc fit bolts and tighten to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).
  26.  
  27. Fit brake hose to abutment bracket and fit clip.
  28.  
  29. Clean ABS sensor, smear sensor with an anti-seize grease and fit sensor to hub.
    CAUTION
    Ensure ABS sensor is fully located into hub, so that sensor touches pole wheel teeth.

  31. Fit ABS sensor lead to bracket.
  32.  
  33. Fit new drive shaft nut and tighten to 295 ft. lbs. (400 Nm). Stake nut to shaft.

  37. Fit road wheel(s) and tighten nuts to 85 ft. lbs. (115 Nm).

  39. Remove stands and lower vehicle.

  5. Unbolt the brake caliper and position it aside, leaving the hose attached.

  5. Remove the axle hub nut.
  6.  
  7. Unbolt the brake caliper and position it aside, leaving the hose attached.
  8.  
  9. Remove the brake rotor.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the ABS sensor lead, then remove the ABS sensor from the hub.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the height sensor link.
  14.  
  15. Loosen the lower arm-to-sub-frame bolt a quarter turn.
  16.  
  17. Remove the lower arm ball joint-to-hub nut.
  18.  
  19. Release the lower ball joint and disconnect the lower arm from the hub.
  20.  
  21. Loosen the tie rod-to-sub-frame bolt one quarter turn.
  22.  
  23. Remove the tie rod-to-ball joint nut.
  24.  
  25. Disconnect the tie rod from the ball joint.
  26.  
  27. Remove and discard the nut attaching the track rod ball joint to the steering arm.
  28.  
  29. Install an M14 nut to the ball pin so it is flush with the end of the pin.
  30.  
  31. Using a separator, disconnect the ball pin from the steering arm.
  32.  
  33. Remove the M14 nut.
  34.  
  35. Install tool set LRT-60-030 to the front hub.

  37. Tighten the center screw on the tool to press the driveshaft from the flange.

  39. Remove the tool set.

  41. Remove the bolts attaching the hub to the damper and remove the hub.

  43. Remove the brake shield from the hub.
  44.  
  45. Install mounting pins LRT-60-033/3 to the caliper mounting holes in the hub.

  47. Fit adapter LRT-60-033/5 to the drive flange.
  48.  
  49. Fit plate LRT-6-033/2 to the mounting pin, then fit LRT-60-033/4 over the steering arm and fit to the plate.
  50.  
  51. Screw ram LRT-60-033/1 into the plate and press the drive flange from the hub.
  52.  
  53. Remove plate and pin from hub.
  54.  
  55. Remove and discard the circlip.
  56.  
  57. Fit adapter LRT-60-033/6 to the bearing. Reinstall the plate and the pin and press the bearing from the hub.
  58.  
  59. Remove the bearing race from the drive flange with a bearing separator.

To install:

  1. Clean the hub and drive flange surfaces.
  2.  
  3. Position anvil LRT-60-033/10 on a hydraulic press bed.
  4.  
  5. Place the hub over the anvil.
  6.  
  7. Insert stud/bearing in hub about half way in.
  8.  
  9. Press bearing into the hub using adapter LRT-6-033/12.
  10.  
  11. Install a new circlip.
  12.  
  13. Fit bearing support LRT-60-033/11 to the anvil and press the drive flange into the bearing using adapter LRT-60-033/12.
  14.  
  15. Remove all tools
  16.  
  17. Install the brake shield.
  18.  
  19. Clean the hub-to-damper mating surfaces and the driveshaft and drive flange splines.
  20.  
  21. Lightly lubricate the splines.
  22.  
  23. Position the hub assembly and install the upper bolt.
  24.  
  25. Install the drive shaft to the hub, align the hub and install the lower bolt.
  26.  
  27. Tighten the upper and lower bolts to 184 ft. lbs. (250 Nm).
  28.  
  29. Using the same tools as in removal, install the driveshaft into the drive flange.
  30.  
  31. Using new nuts, install the ball joint to steering arm, tie rod to ball joint and ball joint to hub. Tighten all nuts to 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm).
  32.  
  33. Install new bolts in lower arm to sub-frame and tie rod to sub-frame, but do not tighten.
  34.  
  35. Connect height sensor link.
  36.  
  37. Install ABS sensor after coating it with anti-seize.
  38.  
  39. Attach ABS sensor lead.
  40.  
  41. Install the brake rotor.
  42.  
  43. Install a new axle hub nut and tighten to 311 ft. lbs. (420 Nm).
  44.  
  45. Stake the nut to the shaft.
  46.  
  47. Install the brake caliper.
  48.  
  49. Install the wheels and lower the vehicle.
  50.  
  51. Tighten the tie rod-to-sub-frame and lower arm-to-sub-frame bolts to 121 ft. lbs. (165 Nm), plus an additional 90 degrees.
  52.  
  53. Check the front wheel alignment.
  54.
