Removal & Installation




CAUTION
These models covered are equipped with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), which uses an air bag. Whenever working near any of the SRS components, such as the impact sensors, the air bag module, steering column and instrument panel, disable the SRS and refer to the precautions in the Chassis Electrical Section.

  1. Make sure the steering wheel is in the center position (wheels in the straight ahead position)
  2.  
  3. Remove the key from the ignition.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the negative battery cable first, then the positive cable.
  6.  
  7. Wait 10-20 minutes for the back-up power to discharge. Do NOT proceed until the back-up power is discharged from the SRS system!
  8.  
  9. Remove the driver-s side air bag module and steering wheel, as outlined under the Steering Wheel Removal & Installation procedure in this section.
    WARNING
    Use tape to prevent rotation of the rotary coupler once the steering wheel is removed.

  10.  
  11. Remove the steering column nacelle, as follows:
    1. Carefully remove the upper half of the nacelle. Be careful when releasing clips from lower half of nacelle.
    2.  
    3. Remove the 2 screws securing the lower nacelle to the steering column.
    4.  
    5. Lower the steering column tilt lever.
    6.  
    7. Carefully remove the cover from starter switch, being careful not to damage the passive coil.
    8.  
    9. Carefully pull the lower half of the nacelle from the retaining clip on the column lock

  13. Remove the rotary coupler, as follows:
    1. Disconnect the 2 multiplugs from rotary coupler.
    2.  
    3. Remove the 4 screws and remove the rotary coupler.
      WARNING
      Do not disassemble the rotary coupler, it has no serviceable parts and must be replaced as a complete unit.

  15. Detach the multiplug connector from the washer and wiper switch.
  16.  
  17. Release the multiplug connector from switch base on steering column.
  18.  
  19. Disconnect multiplug from connector.
  20.  
  21. Unfasten the 2 screws from wiper switch.

  23. Depress the retaining tab and remove the switch.

To install:

  1. Fit washer and wiper switch assembly and secure with screws.
  2.  
  3. Connect multiplugs to switch.
  4.  
  5. Secure multiplug to steering column.
  6.  
  7. Install the rotary coupler, as follows:
    1. Make sure the rotary coupler is installed in its centered position. To obtain center position, rotate coupler gently clockwise and counter-clockwise until the white segment appears on the indicator wheel.
      WARNING
      Make sure the front wheels are in the straight ahead position.

    3. Fit rotary coupler and secure with screws.
    4.  
    5. Connect multiplugs to rotary coupler.
    6.

  9. Install the steering column nacelle, as follows:
    1. Ensure that the steering column tilt lever is lowered.
    2.  
    3. Position the lower half of nacelle and engage with clip on column lock.
    4.  
    5. Raise the column tilt lever.
    6.  
    7. Install and tighten 2 screws securing lower half of nacelle to steering column.
    8.  
    9. Install the cover to starter switch.
    10.  
    11. Install the upper half of nacelle and ensure that clips engage with lower half.
    12.

  11. Install the steering wheel and driver-s air bag module, as outlined in this section.

  13. Connect the positive, then the negative battery cables.
  14.

    1. Open the fascia lower access panel.

    3. Remove 3 screws securing steering column nacelle halves together.
    4.  
    5. Release clips securing nacelle together and remove from steering column.

  13. Remove the rotary coupler, as follows:
    1. Release rotary coupler connector from bracket and disconnect from harness.
    2.  
    3. Disconnect rotary coupler connector from harness.
    4.  
    5. Remove rotary coupler.

  15. Release passive coil from steering column lock and lower the coil without disconnecting the harness.
  16.  
  17. Release front wiper delay connector from column switch mounting bracket and disconnect from harness.
  18.  
  19. Disconnect harness connector from wiper switch.
  20.  
  21. Remove 2 screws securing switch, carefully raise edge of switch bracket to clear location peg and remove switch.

To install:

  1. Install the new switch to bracket and secure with screws.
  2.  
  3. Connect harness connector to switch.
  4.  
  5. Connect front wiper delay connector and Install the connector to switch bracket.
  6.  
  7. Install the passive coil to column lock.
  8.  
  9. Install the rotary coupler, as follows:
    1. Install the rotary coupler to steering column and connect connector to harness.
    2.  
    3. Connect rotary coupler connector to harness and secure to bracket.
    4.

  11. Install the steering column nacelle, as follows:
    1. Position the nacelle to steering column and secure with clips and screws.
    2.  
    3. Close fascia lower access panel.
    4.  

  12.  
  13. Install the steering wheel and driver-s air bag module, as outlined in this section.
  14.  
  15. Connect the positive, then the negative battery cables.
  16.  

Turn Signal (Combination) Switch
  1. Turn the ignition OFF , then remove the ignition key from the switch.
  2.  
  3. Remove the steering column nacelle, as follows:
    1. Carefully remove the upper half of the nacelle. Be careful when releasing clips from lower half of nacelle.
    2.  
    3. Remove the 2 screws securing the lower nacelle to the steering column.
    4.  
    5. Lower the steering column tilt lever.
    6.  
    7. Carefully remove the cover from starter switch, being careful not to damage the passive coil.
    8.  
    9. Carefully pull the lower half of the nacelle from the retaining clip on the column lock

  5. Disconnect the 2 multiplugs from the indicator and light switch.
  6.  
  7. Rotate the steering wheel to access switch screws.
  8.  
  9. Remove 2 screws securing switch.
  10.  
  11. Depress the retaining tab, then remove the switch.

To install:

  1. Install the indicator and light switch and secure with the screws.
  2.  
  3. Connect multiplugs to switch.
  4.  
  5. Install the steering column nacelle, as follows:
    1. Ensure that the steering column tilt lever is lowered.
    2.  
    3. Position the lower half of nacelle and engage with clip on column lock.
    4.  
    5. Raise the column tilt lever.
    6.  
    7. Install and tighten 2 screws securing lower half of nacelle to steering column.
    8.  
    9. Install the cover to starter switch.
    10.  
    11. Install the upper half of nacelle and ensure that clips engage with lower half.
    12.

    5. Release clips securing nacelle together and remove from steering column.

  13. Remove the rotary coupler, as follows:
    1. Release rotary coupler connector from bracket and disconnect from harness.
    2.  
    3. Disconnect rotary coupler connector from harness.
    4.  
    5. Remove rotary coupler.

  15. Remove 2 screws securing switch.
  16.  
  17. Carefully raise the edge of switch bracket to clear the location peg and release the switch from bracket.
  18.  
  19. Disconnect the 2 connectors, then remove the switch.

To install:

  1. Position the switch and attach the connectors.
  2.  
  3. Position the switch on the bracket and secure with screws.
  4.  
  5. Install the rotary coupler, as follows:
    1. Install the rotary coupler to steering column and connect connector to harness.
    2.  
    3. Connect rotary coupler connector to harness and secure to bracket.
    4.  

  6.  
  7. Install the steering column nacelle, as follows:
    1. Position the nacelle to steering column and secure with clips and screws.
    2.  
    3. Close fascia lower access panel.
    4.  

  8.  
  9. Install the steering wheel and driver-s air bag module, as outlined in this section.
  10.  
  11. Connect the positive, then the negative battery cables.

    1. Fully extend the steering column for access.

    3. Remove the 3 Torx® screws securing steering column nacelle.
    4.  
    5. Steering wheel removed from graphic for illustration purposes only.
    6.  
    7. Release the nacelle from clips securing assembly to column extension gaiter
    8.  
    9. Remove the steering column nacelle.

  13. Remove the rotary coupler, as follows:
    1. Remove 4 Torx® screws securing rotary coupler assembly to column. Release coupler assembly.
    2.  
    3. Disconnect 5 multiplugs from rotary coupler.
    4.  
    5. Remove rotary coupler assembly.
    6.

  15. Depress the 2 clips and remove the switch from rotary coupler assembly.

  17. Position the switch to the rotary coupler, ensure engagement of clips.
  18.  
  19. Install the rotary coupler, as follows:
    1. Connect multiplugs to rotary coupler.
    2.  
    3. Fit rotary coupler to column, secure with the Torx® screws.
    4.

  21. Install the steering column nacelle, as follows:
    1. Push steering column extension gaiter fully forwards and fit lower half of nacelle.
    2.  
    3. Fit and tighten the 2 T25 Torx® screws.
      NOTE
      Ensure the lower half of nacelle does not interfere with the steering wheel.

    4.  
    5. Fit upper half of nacelle and ensure that clips engage with lower half.
    6.  
    7. Secure upper half of nacelle with T20 Torx® screw.
    8.  
    9. Fit and secure steering column extension gaiter to nacelle.
      NOTE
      Ensure the nacelle does not interfere with the steering wheel.

  23. Install the steering wheel and driver-s air bag module, as outlined in this section.

  25. Connect the positive, then the negative battery cables.
