Parking Brake Shoes

Removal & Installation



The rear drum brake shoes serve as the parking brakes. Refer to the procedures under Rear Drum Brakes.

  1. Remove the rear halfshaft, as outlined in the Drive Train Section.
  2.  
  3. Unfasten the retaining screw and remove the brake drum.
  4.  
  5. Remove the 2 washers, springs and pins retaining brake shoes to back plate.
  6.  
  7. Release the return springs and brake shoe.
  8.  
  9. Remove the retaining spring securing abutment lever to back plate.
  10.  
  11. Release the remaining brake shoe from brake cable, remove brake shoe and collect return springs.
  12.  
  13. Remove the adjuster plungers.
  14.  
  15. Remove the 'C' clip securing the cable lever to brake shoe. Remove flat washer, lever, 2 Belleville washers and pivot pin.
  16.  
  17. Clean all components with a suitable brake cleaning fluid.
    WARNING
    Do not use compressed air to clean brake components. Dust from friction materials can be harmful if inhaled.

To install:

  1. Lubricate the cable lever pivot pin.
  2.  
  3. Install the pivot pin to shoe, fit cable lever washers and secure with 'C' clip.
  4.  
  5. Install the adjuster plungers.
  6.  
  7. Install the shoe to brake cable, align to back plate and adjuster. Secure shoe to back plate with pin, spring and washer.
  8.  
  9. Install the abutment plate to brake shoe.
  10.  
  11. Install the return springs with remaining shoe. Secure shoe to back plate with pin, spring and washer.
  12.  
  13. Install the abutment plate retaining spring.
  14.  
  15. Clean brake drum and mating face.
  16.  
  17. Position the brake drum and tighten retaining screw.
  18.  
  19. Install the rear halfshaft.
  20.  
  21. Adjust the parking brake, as outlined in this section.
  22.  

Adjustment



The rear drum brake shoes serve as the parking brakes. Refer to the procedures under Rear Drum Brakes.

  1. Raise and safely support the rear of vehicle with safety stands.
  2.  
  3. Make sure the parking brake lever is fully released.
  4.  
  5. Tighten the brake shoe adjusting bolt until brake drum is locked, then back off of the adjusting bolt 1.5 turns.

  7. Check that the brake drum is free to rotate.
  8.  
  9. Recheck parking brake operation. If parking brake is not fully applied with 3 notches on the ratchet, the parking brake cable needs to be adjusted.
  10.  

  1. Apply the parking brake lever 3 notches on the ratchet. The parking brake should be fully operational. If the parking brake is not fully operational, the brake shoes and/or the parking brake cable need to be adjusted, as outlined in the following steps.

CAUTION
Where possible, a road test should be on well surfaced and dry roads. Always comply with speed limits and local traffic regulations.

  1. Ensure the parking brake is correctly adjusted:
    1. At approximately 24 mph (40 km/h), apply parking brake until braking force can be felt. Apply parking brake one further notch and drive on for 440 yards (400 meters). If necessary, adjust, as follows:

  3. Raise rear of vehicle and support with safety stands.
    CAUTION
    NEVER work on or under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always support the vehicle on safety stands.

  5. Remove the wheels.
  6.  
  7. On each rear brake:
    1. Remove adjuster access plug from brake disc.
    2.  
    3. Rotate brake disc until access hole is in the 6 o'clock position.
    4.  
    5. Using a screwdriver or similar tool, turn brake shoe adjuster until resistance is felt. Apply parking brake several times to centre shoes, re-adjust if required and repeat.
    6.  
    7. Ensure parking brake is released and check disc will not rotate.
    8.  
    9. Back the adjuster off 8 notches, check disc is free to rotate.
    10.  
    11. Install the adjuster access plug.
    12.  
    13. Install the rear wheels.
    14.

  9. Parking brake lever assembly is self adjusting and will correctly tension cables. However after adjustment apply parking brake several times, release parking brake and ensure road wheels are free to rotate.

  11. Lower vehicle.
