Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Raise front of vehicle.
  4.  


WARNING
Do not work on or under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always support the vehicle on safety stands.

  1. Remove front road wheels.
  2.  
  3. Remove and discard nuts securing track rod ball joints to steering arms.
  4.  
  5. Fit an M12 nut to each ball pin, flush with end of each pin.
  6.  
  7. Using LRT-57-043, separate ball pins from right side and left side steering arms. Remove M12 nuts and release ball pins from steering arms.
  8.  
  9. Remove pinch bolt securing steering column to PAS rack pinion.
  10.  
  11. Remove 2 nuts securing steering rack heat shield and remove heat shield.
  12.  
  13. Remove 2 bolts securing coolant rail to cylinder block.
  14.  
  15. Remove 2 bolts and washers securing PAS rack clamp to bulkhead, discard bolts.
  16.  
  17. Remove PAS rack clamp.
  18.  
  19. Remove rubber mount.
  20.  
  21. Remove and discard 2 bolts securing PAS rack mounting to bulkhead.
  22.  
  23. Release PAS rack pinion from steering column.
  24.  
  25. Position container to collect PAS fluid spillage.
  26.  
  27. Remove bolt securing pipe bracket to PAS rack.
  28.  
  29. Release pipe unions and disconnect fluid pipes from PAS rack.
  30.  


CAUTION
Always fit plugs to open connections to prevent contamination.

  1. Remove and discard O-rings.
  2.  
  3. Remove bolt securing PAS pipes to clamp and loosen clamp bolt.
  4.  
  5. With assistance remove PAS rack from passenger side of vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Remove dust seal from pinion housing.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Fit PAS rack to vehicle from passengers side.
  2.  
  3. Fit dust shield to pinion housing.
  4.  
  5. Ensure pipe unions are clean.
  6.  
  7. Fit new O-rings to fluid pipes.
  8.  
  9. Fit fluid pipes to PAS rack but do not tighten at this stage.
  10.  
  11. Align fluid pipe bracket to PAS rack, fit bolt but do not tighten at this stage.
  12.  
  13. With assistance fit PAS rack pinion to steering column, ensuring column coupling is aligned with gear input flag.
  14.  
  15. Fit washers and new bolts securing steering rack mounting to bulkhead, but do not tighten at this stage. Ensure large washer is fitted to lower bolt.
  16.  
  17. Fit rubber mount and clamp to PAS rack.
  18.  
  19. Fit bolts securing clamp to bulkhead but do not tighten at this stage.
  20.  
  21. Tighten PAS rack mounting bolts to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).
  22.  
  23. Tighten PAS rack clamp bolts to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).
  24.  
  25. Tighten PAS rack fluid feed pipe union to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
  26.  
  27. Tighten PAS rack fluid return pipe union to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
  28.  
  29. Tighten fluid pipe bracket to 7.5 ft. lbs. (10 Nm).
  30.  
  31. Align PAS rack clamp and tighten bolt.
  32.  
  33. Align pipes to clamp fit bolt and tighten to 7.5 ft. lbs. (10 Nm).
  34.  
  35. Fit pinch bolt to steering column and tighten to 24 ft. lbs. (32 Nm).
  36.  


CAUTION
Nuts and bolts must be tightened with the weight of the vehicle on the suspension.

  1. Ensure tapers in track rod end and steering arm are clean and rubber boot is not damaged.
  2.  
  3. Fit ball joints to steering arms, fit new nuts and tighten to 41 ft. lbs. (55 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Align coolant rail to cylinder block, fit bolts and tighten to 7 ft. lbs. (9 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Position heat shield, fit nuts and tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)
  8.  
  9. Fit road wheel(s) and tighten nuts to 85 ft. lbs. (115 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Remove stands and lower vehicle.
  12.  
  13. Bleed PAS system.
  14.  
  15. Check and adjust front wheel alignment.
  16.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support front of vehicle.
  4.  


CAUTION
Do not work on or under a vehicle supported only on a jack. Always use safety stands.

  1. Remove front road wheels.
  2.  
  3. Ensure steering wheel is centered, then fit centering bolt to steering box, as illustrated.
  4.  
  5. Remove key from steering lock and ensure column lock is engaged.
  6.  
  7. Remove 3 bolts securing intermediate shaft and U-joint.
  8.  
  9. Push shaft upward to release and remove U-joint.
  10.

CAUTION
Do not turn steering wheel with intermediate shaft or U-joint disconnected, as damage to rotary coupler and steering wheel switches may occur.

  1. Position a container to catch steering fluid.
  2.  
  3. Remove bolt securing PAS pipe bracket to steering box. Release pipes and discard O-rings.
  4.  


CAUTION
Always install plugs to open connections to prevent contamination.

  1. Remove securing nut and bolt and release the panhard rod.
  2.  
  3. Remove the nut securing drag link to drop arm. Use LRT-57-036 to break taper joint and release drag link.
  4.  
  5. With assistance, remove 4 securing bolts and remove steering gear box.
  6.  
  7. Remove centering bolt from steering box.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Install centering bolt into steering box.
  2.  
  3. With assistance, position steering gear box and install and tighten bolts to 66 ft. lbs. (90 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Position drag link to drop arm. Fit nut and tighten to 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Position panhard rod. Install bolt and nut and tighten to 170 ft. lbs. (230 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Clean PAS pipe ends and O-ring recesses.
  10.  
  11. Fit new O-rings to pipes and attach to steering gear box. Position pip bracket and tighten bracket bolt to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Ensure steering wheel is centered. Connect U-joint to intermediate shaft and tighten bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Remove centering bolt from steering gear box.
  16.  
  17. Install road wheels and tighten nuts to 103 ft. lbs. (140 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Remove safety stands and lower vehicle.
  20.  
  21. Check and refill PAS oil.
  22.  
  23. Bleed PAS system.
  24.  
  25. Center steering linkage.
  26.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Drain the fluid from the power steering fluid reservoir.
  6.  
  7. Clean the steering box to prevent dirt from entering when the hoses are removed.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the feed and return lines from the steering box.
  10.  
  11. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  12.  
  13. Remove the under tray
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the drag link from the drop arm.
  16.  
  17. Remove the universal joint connecting the steering column to the steering box.
  18.  
  19. Remove the power steering box mounting bolts, then remove the box from the vehicle.
  20.  

To install:

  1. Install the steering box and tighten the mounting bolts as follows:

    Discovery: 66 ft. lbs. (90 Nm)
     
    Range Rover: 92 ft. lbs. (125 Nm)
     

  2.  
  3. Connect the universal joint and tighten the pinch bolts 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Connect the drag link to the drop arm and tighten the retaining nut as follows:

    Discovery: 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm)
     
    Range Rover: 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm)
     

  6.  
  7. Lower the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Connect the hydraulic hoses to the steering box and tighten the 16mm thread to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm) and the 14mm thread to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Fill the power steering fluid reservoir.
  12.  
  13. With engine running, test steering system for leaks by holding steering in both full lock directions.
  14.  
  15. Ensure steering wheel is correctly aligned when wheels are positioned straight ahead.
  16.  
  17. If necessary, reposition the steering wheel.
  18.  
  19. Road test vehicle.
  20.

  11. Remove 3 bolts securing intermediate shaft and U-joint.
  12.

  17. Install wheels and tighten nuts to 103 ft. lbs. (140 Nm).

  19. Remove safety stands and lower vehicle.
  20.  
  21. Check and refill PAS oil.
  22.  
  23. Bleed PAS system.
  24.  
  25. Center steering linkage.

  3. Raise and support front of vehicle.
    CAUTION

  5. Remove front wheels.
  6.  
  7. Remove the front air dam and splash shield.
  8.  
  9. Remove the lower air flow panel.
  10.  
  11. Remove the left side height sensor.
  12.  
  13. Remove the left front driveshaft.
  14.  
  15. Separate the ball pin from the steering arm.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the steering sensor connector.
  18.  
  19. Mark the position of the lower steering column to the gear, then remove the bolt from the steering column camp.
    CAUTION
    Do not turn steering wheel with shaft disconnected, as damage to rotary coupler and steering wheel switches may occur.

  20.  
  21. Disconnect the power steering feed line clamp.
  22.  
  23. Position a container to catch steering fluid.
  24.  
  25. Remove 2 bolts and 2 nuts and remove steering rack by rotating it out from the left side.
  26.  

To install:

  1. With assistance, position steering gear and install and tighten bolts to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm), then tighten an additional 90 degrees.
  2.  
  3. Using a new nut, attach the track rod end ball joints to the steering arm and tighten the nuts to 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Using new washers, attach the banjo bolts for fluid feed and return lines and tighten the M14 bolt to 26 ft. lbs. (36 Nm), and the M16 bolt to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Connect the feed line clamp.
  8.  
  9. Using the position marked on removal, attach the lower steering column to the rack and tighten the bolt to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Connect the steering sensor connector.
  12.  
  13. Connect the ball pin to the steering arm.
  14.  
  15. Install the left front driveshaft.
  16.  
  17. Install the left side height sensor.
  18.  
  19. Install the lower air flow panel.
  20.  
  21. Install the front air dam and splash shield.
  22.  
  23. Install the front wheels.
  24.  
  25. Check the power steering fluid level and then bleed the system.
  26.  
  27. Check the front wheel alignment.
  28.
