Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect battery ground lead.
  4.  
  5. Raise rear of vehicle.
    WARNING
    Do not work on or under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always support the vehicle on safety stands.

  6.  
  7. Remove road wheel.
  8.  
  9. Remove drive shaft.
  10.  
  11. Place drive shaft in vise.
  12.  
  13. Release both boot clips and discard.
  14.  
  15. Slide boot along shaft to gain access to outer joint.
  16.  
  17. Using a suitable drift against the inner part of the joint, remove joint from shaft.
  18.  
  19. Inspect boot for damage and renew if necessary.
  20.  
  21. Remove and discard circlip from drive shaft.
  22.  

To install:

  1. Clean drive shaft and boot.
  2.  
  3. Fit new circlip to drive shaft.
  4.  
  5. Position outer joint to shaft, use a screwdriver to press circlip into its groove and push joint fully onto shaft.
  6.  
  7. Apply grease from the sachet to the joint.
  8.  
  9. Position boot to joint and use a 'Band-it Thriftool' LRT-99-019 to secure the 2 new clips.
  10.  
  11. Fit drive shaft.
  12.  
  13. Fit road wheel(s) and tighten nuts to 85 ft. lbs. (115 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Remove stands and lower vehicle.
  16.  
  17. Connect the negative battery cable.
  18.  


NOTE
The same procedure is used for the inner and outer joints.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Axle shaft
     
    Place axle shaft in a vise
     
    Bands from the boot and pull back the boot to expose the joint.
     

  4.  
  5. Using a drift against the inner part of the joint, drive the joint from the shaft.
  6.  
  7. Remove and discard the circlip.
  8.  
  9. Remove the spacer.
  10.  
  11. Remove the boot.
  12.  

To install:


NOTE
The joint is not rebuildable. Replace it and the boot.

  1. Install a new boot and bands.
  2.  
  3. Install the circlip and spacer.
  4.  
  5. Place the new joint into position and press it into place.
    NOTE
    A new joint will come with a grease packet. Apply the grease as directed in the kit.

  6.  
  7. Position the boot and secure the bands.
  8.  
  9. Install the axle shaft.
  10.
