Differential Oil Seals

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Raise rear of vehicle.
    WARNING
    Do not work on or under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always support the vehicle on safety stands.

  5. Remove road wheel.
  6.  
  7. Remove bolt securing parking brake cable to sub-frame.
  8.  
  9. Remove nut and bolt securing trailing link to rear hub, collect spacer from under bolt head.
  10.  
  11. Remove nut and bolt securing fixed transverse link to sub-frame. Collect dynamic shock absorber.
  12.  
  13. Remove nut and bolt securing adjustable transverse link to sub-frame.
  14.  
  15. Position drain tin to catch oil spillage.
  16.  
  17. With assistance pull hub assembly outwards.
  18.  
  19. Taking care not damage oil seal 'flinger', release drive shaft from differential using LRT-51-014 and position shaft aside.
  20.  
  21. Remove and discard circlip from drive shaft.
  22.  
  23. Remove differential oil seal.
  24.  

To install:

  1. Clean drive shaft oil seal recess in axle casing.
  2.  
  3. Install new oil seal using LRT-51-012.
  4.  
  5. Clean end of drive shaft and location in differential.
  6.  
  7. Check condition of oil seal slinger, renew if damaged.
  8.  
  9. Install new circlip to drive shaft.
  10.  
  11. With assistance fit drive shaft to differential, push drive shaft fully home to engage circlip.
  12.  
  13. Install nut and bolt to fixed transverse link and tighten to 89 ft. lbs. (120 Nm).
    CAUTION
    Nuts and bolts must be tightened with weight of vehicle on suspension.

  14.  
  15. Install nut, bolt and dynamic shock absorber to adjustable transverse link and tighten to 89 ft. lbs. (120 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Install spacer, nut and bolt to trailing link and tighten to 89 ft. lbs. (120 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Install bolt securing parking brake cable clip and tighten to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
  20.  
  21. Install road wheel(s) and tighten nuts to 85 ft. lbs. (115 Nm).
  22.  
  23. Check differential oil level.
  24.  
  25. Remove stands and lower vehicle.
  26.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect battery ground lead.
  4.  
  5. Raise rear of vehicle.
    WARNING
    Do not work on or under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always support the vehicle on safety stands.

  6.  
  7. Remove road wheel.
  8.  
  9. Remove 6 bolts attaching the driveshaft to differential.
  10.  
  11. Support the lower control arm with a jack.
  12.  
  13. Remove the lower control arm-to-hub bolt.
  14.  
  15. Lower the jack.
  16.  
  17. Pull the driveshaft outward from the differential.
  18.  
  19. Using a drift, remove the drive flange.
  20.  
  21. Remove the circlip from the driveshaft and discard.
  22.  
  23. Remove the oil seal and discard.
  24.  

To install:

  1. Clean drive shaft oil seal recess in axle casing.
  2.  
  3. Install new oil seal using LRT-51-021.
  4.  
  5. Install a new circlip to the driveshaft.
  6.  
  7. Lubricate driveshaft splines and oil seal mating surface.
  8.  
  9. Install the drive flange.
  10.  
  11. Clean lower arm and hub mating surfaces.
  12.  
  13. Install the driveshaft to the differential.
  14.  
  15. Align the lower control arm to the hub and lightly tighten the bolt.
  16.  
  17. Using new bolts, attach the plates and bolts attaching the driveshaft to differential and tighten to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm), plus an additional 60 degrees.
  18.  
  19. Install the wheels.
  20.  
  21. Lower the vehicle and tighten the lower control arm-to-hub bolt to 184 ft. lbs. (250 Nm).
  22.
