Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove both drive shafts.
  4.  
  5. Reference mark rear propeller shaft for reassembly.
  6.  
  7. Position container to catch oil spillage.
  8.  
  9. Remove 4 nuts and bolts securing propeller shaft to differential. Release propeller shaft and tie aside.
  10.  
  11. Support weight of differential assembly on a jack.
  12.  
  13. Remove 2 bolts securing differential to front mounting.
  14.  
  15. Depress red locking collar and disconnect breather pipe from differential casing.
  16.  
  17. Remove 4 bolts securing differential assembly to rear mountings.
  18.  
  19. With assistance, rotate differential assembly through 90 degrees and remove from sub-frame.
  20.  

To install:

  1. With assistance position differential assembly to sub-frame and locate in mountings, fit bolts but do not tighten at this stage.
  2.  
  3. Position centralizing jig LRT-51-013 to align differential assembly.
  4.  
  5. Tighten forward bolts to 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Tighten rearward bolts to 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Remove LRT-51-013.
  10.  
  11. Connect breather pipe.
  12.  
  13. Position propeller shaft to rear axle and align reference marks.
  14.  
  15. Install and tighten nuts and bolt securing propeller shaft to rear axle to 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Install drive shafts.
  18.  
  19. Check differential oil level.
  20.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support rear of vehicle.
    WARNING
    Do not work on or under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always use safety stands.

  4.  
  5. Drain oil from differential.
  6.  
  7. If same components are to be reinstalled, reference-mark propeller shaft and mating components.
  8.  
  9. Remove flexible coupling from pinion flange. Release propeller shaft and tie aside.
  10.  
  11. Using tool LRT-51-008, extract centering peg from pinion flange. Remove peg from tool.
  12.  
  13. Remove right and left side rear brake rotors.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect ABS sensor connectors.
  16.  
  17. Release each harness from brake hose and hose bracket.
  18.  
  19. Remove 4 bolts holding each rear wheel hub to axle flange.
  20.  
  21. Remove wheel hubs and drive shafts from rear axle. Remove and discard O-rings from hubs.
  22.  
  23. Remove 10 bolts securing differential to axle. Remove differential from axle.
  24.  

To install:

  1. Clean drive shafts, wheel hubs and hub locations in rear axle.
  2.  
  3. Remove all traces of sealant from differential and axle mating faces.
  4.  
  5. Apply sealant STC 3811 to differential or axle mating faces (except bolt holes).
  6.  
  7. Apply sealant STC 50552 to threads of differential bolts.
  8.  
  9. Position differential to axle and tighten bolts to 41 ft. lbs. (55 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Clean pinion flange and centering peg.
  12.  
  13. With a tubular drift, install centering peg into pinion flange. Ensure large diameter of peg is below pinion flange mounting surface.
  14.  
  15. Position propeller shaft and align reference marks.
  16.  
  17. Fit nuts and bolts holding flexible coupling to pinion flange. Tighten to 56 ft. lbs. (76 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Lubricate 2 new wheel hub O-rings with clean differential oil.
  20.  
  21. Install O-rings on hubs.
  22.  
  23. Fit both drive shafts and wheel hubs to rear axle housing. Install and tighten hub bolts to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).
  24.  
  25. Connect each ABS sensor multiplug and secure each harness to brake hose and hose bracket.
  26.  
  27. Install both brake rotors.
  28.  
  29. Remove stands and lower vehicle.
  30.  
  31. Refill differential with clean differential oil.
  32.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the chassis.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the exhaust system.
  6.  
  7. Remove the center heat shield.
  8.  
  9. Remove the fuel tank heat shield.
  10.  
  11. Reference mark the propeller shaft to differential and remove the propeller shaft nuts.
  12.  
  13. Remove the center support bearing nuts and lower and support the propeller shaft.
  14.  
  15. Raise and support the vehicle and remove the wheels.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the breather hose from the differential.
  18.  
  19. Drain the differential oil.
  20.  
  21. Reference mark the driveshaft-to-differential flanges and remove the attaching bolts and plates.
  22.  
  23. Position a jack under the lower control arm.
  24.  
  25. Remove the lower control arm-to-hub bolt.
  26.  
  27. Remove the jack and separate the lower arm from the hub.
  28.  
  29. Disconnect the driveshaft from the differential.
  30.  
  31. Repeat the procedure on the opposite side.
  32.  
  33. Place a suitable jack under the differential.
  34.  
  35. Remove 2 bolts and 1 nut and remove the differential.
  36.  

To install:

  1. Raise the differential into position.
  2.  
  3. Using new bolts, attach the differential to the sub-frame and tighten the front bolts to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install a new nut and bolt and tighten the rear of the differential to the sub-frame to 121 ft. lbs. (165 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Connect the driveshaft to the differential.
  8.  
  9. Align the lower control arm-to-hub and lightly tighten the bolt.
  10.  
  11. Using the reference mark attach the driveshaft-to-differential flange and tighten the bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm) plus an additional 60 degrees. Do this on both sides.
  12.  
  13. Connect breather hose.
  14.  
  15. Install the wheels.
  16.  
  17. Lower the vehicle.
  18.  
  19. Tighten the lower control arm-to-hub bolts to 184 ft. lbs. (250 Nm).
  20.  
  21. Install the propeller shaft and support bearing.
  22.  
  23. Install fuel tank heat shield.
  24.  
  25. Install the center heat shield.
  26.  
  27. Connect the exhaust system.
  28.  
  29. Fill the differential with oil.
  30.
