Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Raise rear of vehicle.
    WARNING
    Do not work on or under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always support the vehicle on safety stands.

  5. Remove road wheel.
  6.  
  7. With assistant depressing the brake pedal, remove and discard drive shaft nut.
  8.  
  9. Remove brake shoe assembly.
  10.  
  11. Using LRT-70-007 release parking brake cable from backplate and remove from backplate.
  12.  
  13. Remove clip securing brake hose to bracket on shock absorber.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect brake pipe union from wheel cylinder.
    CAUTION
    Always fit plugs to open connections to prevent contamination.

  17. Release ABS sensor from hub.
  18.  
  19. Remove nut and bolt securing trailing link to hub.
  20.  
  21. Remove nut, bolt and washers securing transverse links to hub.
  22.  
  23. Remove 2 nuts and bolts securing hub to shock absorber.
  24.  
  25. Release shock absorber from hub.
  26.  
  27. Remove hub assembly from drive shaft.
  28.  

To install:

  1. Install hub assembly to drive shaft.
  2.  
  3. Install hub to shock absorber and tighten bolts to 151 ft. lbs. (205 Nm).
    CAUTION
    Nuts and bolts must be tightened with weight of vehicle on suspension.

  4.  
  5. Install nut, bolt and washers securing transverse links to hub and tighten nut to 89 ft. lbs. (120 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install trailing link to hub and tighten nut and bolt to 89 ft. lbs. (120 Nm).
    NOTE
    Ensure that washers are fitted to both ends of bolts

  8.  
  9. Clean ABS sensor, smear sensor with an anti-seize grease and fit sensor to hub.
    CAUTION
    Ensure ABS sensor is fully located into hub, so that sensor touches pole wheel teeth.

  10.  
  11. Install brake pipe to wheel cylinder and tighten union to 10 ft. lbs. (14 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install clip securing brake pipe to bracket.
  14.  
  15. Install and secure parking brake cable to backplate.
  16.  
  17. Install brake shoes.
  18.  
  19. Install new drive shaft nut and tighten to 295 ft. lbs. (400 Nm). Stake nut to shaft.
  20.  
  21. Bleed brakes.
  22.  
  23. Install road wheel(s) and tighten nuts to 85 ft. lbs. (115 Nm).
  24.  
  25. Remove stands and lower vehicle.
  26.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
    WARNING
    If model is equipped with SLS, ensure air suspension system is made safe before commencing work; otherwise, chassis may lower onto bump stops during repair.

  3. Raise rear of vehicle.
    WARNING
    Do not work on or under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always support vehicle on safety stands.

  5. Remove road wheel.
  6.  
  7. Remove drive shaft nut.
  8.  
  9. Remove rear brake rotor.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect ABS sensor connector.
  12.  
  13. Release harness from brake hose and bracket.
  14.  
  15. Remove 4 bolts holding wheel hub to axle flange.
  16.  
  17. Remove wheel hub and drive shaft from axle housing.
  18.  
  19. Remove and discard O-ring from wheel hub.
  20.  
  21. Position wheel hub and drive shaft on a press. Place support beneath wheel stud heads and press drive shaft from wheel hub.
  22.  

To install:

  1. Clean drive shaft splines, wheel hub and axle mating faces, ABS sensor and sensor recess.
  2.  
  3. Install drive shaft partially into axle housing.
  4.  
  5. Lubricate new bearing hub O-ring with clean differential oil. Install O-ring to wheel hub.
  6.  
  7. Apply a 0.125 inch (3mm) wide bead of sealant STC 50554 around drive shaft circumference at middle beveled edge out from flange.
  8.  
  9. Position wheel hub to drive shaft and align to axle. Sealant will smear along length of splines as wheel hub is fitted to drive shaft.
  10.  
  11. Install wheel hub-to-axle bolts and tighten to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install new drive shaft nut. Lightly tighten at this time.
  14.  
  15. Install rear brake rotor.
  16.  
  17. With an assistant, tighten drive shaft nut to 360 ft. lbs. (490 Nm). Stake nut.
    NOTE
    Drive shaft nut must be tightened before sealant is cured.

  18.  
  19. Connect ABS sensor multiplug and secure harness to bracket and brake hose.
  20.  
  21. Install road wheel. Tighten nuts to 103 ft. lbs. (140 Nm).
  22.  
  23. Remove safety stands and lower vehicle.
