Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect battery ground lead.
  4.  
  5. Raise rear of vehicle.
    WARNING
    Do not work on or under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always support the vehicle on safety stands.

  6.  
  7. Remove road wheel.
  8.  
  9. Release stake from drive shaft nut.
  10.  
  11. With assistant depressing the brake pedal, remove and discard drive shaft nut.
  12.  
  13. Remove nut and bolt securing trailing link to rear hub, collect spacer from under bolt head.
  14.  
  15. Remove nut and bolt securing fixed transverse link to sub-frame. Collect dynamic shock absorber.
  16.  
  17. Remove nut and bolt securing adjustable transverse link to sub-frame.
  18.  
  19. Position container to catch oil spillage.
  20.  
  21. With assistance pull hub assembly outwards and release drive shaft outer joint from hub assembly.
  22.  
  23. Taking care not to damage 'Flinger', release drive shaft inner joint from differential using LRT-51-014 and remove drive shaft.
  24.  
  25. Remove and discard drive shaft circlip.
  26.  

To install:

  1. Inspect differential seal, renew if worn or damaged.
  2.  
  3. Clean ends of drive shaft and locations in hub and differential.
  4.  
  5. Lubricate oil seal running surface with transmission oil.
  6.  
  7. Install new circlip to drive shaft.
  8.  
  9. Install drive shaft to differential and push fully home.
    CAUTION
    Pull the drive shaft to ensure the circlip is fully engaged and retains the shaft.

  10.  
  11. With assistance fit drive shaft to hub.
  12.  
  13. Install new drive shaft nut but do not tighten at this stage.
  14.  
  15. Install nut, bolt and dynamic shock absorber to adjustable transverse link and tighten to 89 ft. lbs. (120 Nm).
    CAUTION
    Nuts and bolts must be tightened with the weight of the vehicle on the suspension.

  17. Install nut and bolt to fixed transverse link and tighten to 89 ft. lbs. (120 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Install spacer, nut and bolt to trailing link and tighten to 89 ft. lbs. (120 Nm).
  20.  
  21. Install new drive shaft nut and tighten to 295 ft. lbs. (400 Nm). Stake nut to shaft.
  22.  
  23. Check and top up oil level.
  24.  
  25. Install road wheel(s) and tighten nuts to 85 ft. lbs. (115 Nm).
  26.  
  27. Remove stands and lower vehicle.
  28.  
  29. Connect the negative battery cable.
  30.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.

  3. Disconnect battery ground lead.
  4.  
  5. Raise rear of vehicle.
    WARNING

  7. Remove road wheel.
  8.  
  9. Remove 6 bolts attaching the driveshaft to differential.
  10.  
  11. Remove the axle shaft nut.
  12.  
  13. Remove the brake caliper and wire aside.
  14.  
  15. Remove the brake rotor.
  16.  
  17. Install tool set LRT-60-030 to the front hub. See Front Axle Shaft procedure for instruction.
  18.  
  19. Press the driveshaft from the hub.
  20.  
  21. Support the lower control arm with a jack.
  22.  
  23. Remove the lower control arm-to-hub bolt.
  24.  
  25. Lower the jack.
  26.  
  27. Pull the driveshaft outward from the differential.
  28.  
  29. Remove the driveshaft.
  30.  

To install:

  1. Inspect differential seal, renew if worn or damaged.
  2.  
  3. Clean driveshaft and differential opening.
  4.  
  5. Clean the driveshaft and flange splines and lightly lubricate the splines.
  6.  
  7. Position the drive shaft in the differential and the hub.
  8.  
  9. Align the hub to the lower arm, install and lightly tighten the bolt.
  10.  
  11. Reinstall the tool set to the rear hub.
  12.  
  13. Tighten the tool until the driveshaft is seated in the drive flange.
  14.  
  15. Remove the tool set.
  16.  
  17. Install the brake rotor and the caliper.
  18.  
  19. Install a new axle hub nut and tighten to 311 ft. lbs. (420 Nm).
  20.  
  21. Stake the nut to the shaft.
  22.  
  23. Using new bolts, attach the plates and bolts attaching the driveshaft to differential and tighten to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm), plus an additional 60 degrees.
  24.  
  25. Install the wheels.
  26.  
  27. Lower the vehicle and tighten the lower control arm-to-hub bolt to 184 ft. lbs. (250 Nm).
