Pinion Seal

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Release both drive shafts from differential assembly.
  4.  
  5. Reference mark propeller shaft and pinion flanges to aid reassembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove 4 nuts and bolts securing propeller shaft to differential. Release propeller shaft and tie aside.
  8.  
  9. Check and record the torque required to rotate the pinion and differential.
    CAUTION
    Drive shafts must be removed to obtain correct torque to turn figure.

  11. Using LRT-51-003 to restrain differential flange, remove nut and washer securing pinion flange. Discard nut.
  12.  
  13. Remove pinion flange.
  14.  
  15. Carefully remove and discard oil seal, take care not to damage oil seal recess.
  16.  
  17. Remove oil thrower.
  18.  
  19. Remove pinion bearing inner race.
  20.  
  21. Remove and discard collapsible spacer.
  22.  

To install:

  1. Fit new collapsible spacer.
  2.  
  3. Fit pinion bearing and oil thrower.
  4.  
  5. Clean pinion flange and oil seal recess.
  6.  
  7. Fit new oil seal using LRT-51-010.
  8.  
  9. Fit pinion flange and washer.
  10.  
  11. Restrain pinion flange using LRT- 51-003.
  12.  
  13. Fit new pinion nut and tighten to 140 ft. lbs. (190 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Check for end float on pinion. If end float exists continue to tighten pinion nut until end float is removed.
  16.  
  17. Continue to tighten pinion nut until correct preload is obtained.
  18.  
  19. Pinion preload is 1.2-2.1 ft. lbs. (1.7-2.8 Nm), if higher replace collapsible spacer.
    CAUTION
    Do not tighten pinion nut to more than 275 ft. lbs. (373 Nm), or the collapsible spacer will compress too far.

  21. Clean propeller shaft flange and mating face.
  22.  
  23. Position propeller shaft to rear axle and align reference marks.
  24.  
  25. Tighten propeller shaft nuts and bolts to 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm).
  26.  
  27. Fit drive shafts.
  28.  
  29. Check differential oil level.
  30.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Matchmark the driveshaft and flange and disconnect the driveshaft.
  4.  
  5. Hold the flange and remove the nut.
  6.  
  7. Remove the flange.
  8.  
  9. Remove the seal.

To install:

  1. Clean all mating surfaces.
  2.  
  3. Lubricate the oil seal lips with gear oil.
  4.  
  5. Drive the seal into place.
  6.  
  7. Position the flange and install the holding tool.
  8.  
  9. Install the nut or bolt. Torque the nut to 100 ft. lbs. (135 Nm); the bolt to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Connect the driveshaft. Torque the nuts to 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm).
  12.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Raise front or rear of vehicle, as needed.
    WARNING
    Do not work on or under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always use safety stands.

  4.  
  5. Reference mark rear propeller shaft for reassembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove nuts and bolts securing flexible coupling to pinion flange. Tie propeller shaft aside.
  8.  
  9. If working on rear differential, use tool LRT-51-008 to extract the centering peg from the rear pinion flange, then remove the peg from the removal tool.
  10.  
  11. Using tool LRT-51-003 to hold pinion flange, remove pinion flange bolt and washer. Remove flange.
  12.  
  13. Position a container to catch oil spillage.
  14.  
  15. Using a suitable pry tool, carefully remove the pinion oil seal. Avoid damaging oil seal recess.
  16.  

To install:

  1. Clean pinion oil seal recess and pinion flange. Lubricate oil seal lip with clean differential oil.
  2.  
  3. Using tool LRT-51-010, install a new pinion oil seal.
  4.  
  5. Position pinion flange and bolt and washer in place. Use tool LRT-51-003 to hold pinion flange and tighten bolt to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).
  6.  
  7. On rear differential, use a tubular drift, install the centering peg to the pinion flange. Ensure the large diameter part of the centering peg is below the pinion flange mounting surface.
  8.  
  9. Position propeller shaft and align reference marks.
  10.  
  11. Install nuts and bolts holding flexible coupling to pinion flange. Tighten to 55 ft. lbs. (76 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Remove safety stands and lower vehicle.
  14.  
  15. Check differential oil.
  16.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the chassis.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the exhaust system.
  6.  
  7. Remove the center heat shield.
  8.  
  9. Remove the fuel tank heat shield.
  10.  
  11. Reference mark the propeller shaft to differential and remove the propeller shaft nuts.
  12.  
  13. Remove the center support bearing nuts and lower and support the propeller shaft.
  14.  
  15. Remove the differential locking plate.
  16.  
  17. Reference mark the pinion nut to pinion shaft and remove the pinion nut.
  18.  
  19. Using a puller, remove the pinion flange.
  20.  
  21. Remove the pinion seal.
  22.  

To install:

  1. Clean pinion oil seal recess and pinion flange. Lubricate oil seal lip with clean differential oil.
  2.  
  3. Using tool LRT-12-179 and LRT 51-019, install a new pinion oil seal.
  4.  
  5. Clean the pinion flange.
  6.  
  7. Install the pinion flange and tighten the nut to match the reference marks made previously.
  8.  
  9. Install a new locking plate.
  10.  
  11. Clean the differential and propeller shaft mating surfaces.
  12.  
  13. Install the propeller shaft to the differential flange and locate the support bearing.
  14.  
  15. Install the support bearing nuts but do not tighten.
  16.  
  17. Install the propeller shaft to the differential and tighten the nuts to 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Tighten the support bearing nuts to 15 ft. lbs. ( 21 Nm).
  20.  
  21. Install the fuel tank heat shield.
  22.  
  23. Install the center heat shield.
  24.  
  25. Install the exhaust system.
  26.  
  27. Check the differential oil and fill as needed.
