Lower Ball Joint

Removal & Installation



The ball joints are not replaceable. If a ball joint becomes defective, the control arm must be replaced.


NOTE
Each ball joint can be replaced up to 3 times before the yoke bore becomes over-sized. At each replacement, the yoke should be marked. Check for yellow paint marks about 0.5 inch (12mm) wide. If 3 marks are found, axle case must be replaced.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the steering knuckle.
  4.  
  5. On tool LRT-54-008, install LRT-54-008/22, LRT-54-008/23 and LRT-54-008/24.
  6.  
  7. Use this tool assembly, mounted to the underside of the lower ball joint to press the ball joint from the axle. When the tool ram lead screw reach the end of its stroke, retract the screw and screw the ram further into the tool, then turn the lead screw further in. Repeat this process until ball joint is released from axle.
  8.  
  9. Remove the tool set.
  10.  
  11. Remove the lower ball joint from the axle yoke.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Clean the ball joint location and surround area of axle yoke thoroughly.
  2.  
  3. Place a 0.5 inch (12mm) wide yellow paint stripe on the axle yoke adjacent to the lower ball joint bore.
  4.  
  5. Place a forcing tools, such as LRT-54-008 with LRT-54-022 and 008/14 onto the lower ball joint and position on the axle yoke.
  6.  
  7. Position the ball joint and ensure the tools are properly aligned.
  8.  
  9. Press the ball joint into the yoke.
    CAUTION
    Damage to ball joint boot will result if tools are not properly aligned.

  10.  
  11. Remove the tool set.
  12.  
  13. Position the knuckle on the ball studs. Torque the lower ball joint nut to 100 ft. lbs. (135 Nm).
  14.  


CAUTION
Each ball joint can be replaced up to 3 times before the axle yoke bore becomes oversize. Before commencing work, clean the surrounding area of the joint to be renewed and check for yellow paint marks. If more than 2 marks are found, the axle case must be renewed.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the swivel hub.
  4.  
  5. Assemble the ball joint press tools LRT-54-008/10 and /11 as shown, then press the joint out of the axle yoke.
    NOTE
    When the ram lead screw reaches the end of the stroke, retract the lead screw, screw the ram into the base tool and repeat the operation the until joint is free from the axle.

  6.  
  7. Remove the screw and collect the adapter from the base tool.
  8.

  1. Clean the joint location and the surrounding area of the axle yoke, then make a 12mm wide yellow paint stripe on the axle yoke, adjacent to joint location.
  2.  
  3. Align the tool assembly and press the joint into the axle yoke.
  4.  
  5. Remove the tools from the axle yoke.
  6.  
  7. Install the swivel hub onto the axle.
  8.

  3. Raise and support vehicle chassis with safety stands.
  4.  
  5. Remove the rear wheels.
  6.  
  7. Remove the tie rod.
  8.  
  9. Position a jack under the lower control arm.
  10.  
  11. Remove and discard the lower control arm-to-hub bolt.
  12.  
  13. Lower the jack and disconnect the hub from the arm.
  14.  
  15. Remove and discard the circlip.
  16.  
  17. Remove the lower brake shield bolt.
  18.  
  19. Using tool LRT-64-026, remove the ball joint.
  20.  

To install:

  1. Clean the ball joint and mating surface.
  2.  
  3. Install the ball joint with the circlip facing the rear.
  4.  
  5. Install the brake shield lower bolt.
  6.  
  7. Align the hub to the control arm and tighten the new bolt and nut to 184 ft. lbs. (250 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the tie rod.
  10.  
  11. Install the rear wheels.
  12.  
  13. Check the wheel alignment
  14.
