Upper Ball Joint

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the wheels.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the ABS sensor.
  8.  
  9. Remove the brake hose brackets.
  10.  
  11. Position a jack under the lower control arm.
  12.  
  13. Reference mark the eccentric cam to upper arm.
  14.  
  15. Remove nut attaching the hub to control arm, and disconnect the hub from the arm.
  16.  
  17. Using tool LRT-64-025, remove the ball joint.
  18.  

To install:

  1. Clean the ball joint and hub opening.
  2.  
  3. Using tool LRT-64-025, install the ball joint with the chamfer toward the rear.
  4.  
  5. Ensure that the ball joint protrudes from the machined face 0.030 inch (0.75 mm) as shown in dimension A.
  6.  
  7. Align the hub to the upper arm, install new bolt and using the reference mark align the eccentric cam and lightly tighten the bolt.
  8.  
  9. Connect the brake pipe.
  10.  
  11. Connect the ABS sensor.
  12.  
  13. Install the wheels.
  14.  
  15. Lower the vehicle.
  16.  
  17. Tighten the upper arm-to-hub nut to 121 ft. lbs. (165 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Check the wheel alignment,

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the swivel hub.
  4.  
  5. Using a ball joint forcing tool, such as LRT-54-008/4 and /5, remove the ball joint.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Clean the yoke thoroughly.
  2.  
  3. Place a yellow paint stripe on the yoke adjacent to the bore.
  4.  
  5. Place a forcing tool, such as LRT-54-008-8, on the yoke.
  6.  
  7. Place base LRT-54-008/7 on the yoke. Position the ball joint and align the tool.
  8.  
  9. Press the ball joint into the yoke.
  10.  
  11. Install the swivel.
  12.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Axle shaft
     
    Mud shield
     
    Track rod
     
    Drag link
     
    Ball joint nuts
     
    Break loose the knuckle
     

  4.  
  5. Using forcing tools, such as LRT-54-008 and 008/4 and /5, force the joint from the yoke.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Clean the yoke thoroughly.
  2.  
  3. Place a yellow paint stripe on the yoke adjacent to the bore.
  4.  
  5. Place a forcing tool, such as LRT-54-008-8, on the yoke.
  6.  
  7. Place base LRT-54-008/7 on the yoke. Position the ball joint and align the tool.
  8.  
  9. Press the ball joint into the yoke.
  10.  
  11. Position the knuckle on the ball studs. Torque the upper nut to 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm); the lower nut to 100 ft. lbs. (135 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Connect the track rod and drag link. Torque the nuts to 59 ft. lbs. (81 Nm).
  14.  
  15. The remainder of assembly is the reverse of disassembly.
  16.  


NOTE
Each ball joint can be replaced up to 3 times before the yoke bore becomes over-sized. At each replacement, the yoke should be marked. Factory-trained technicians mark the yoke with yellow paint at each replacement.
