Inspection

  1. Inspect the electrodes and ceramic insulator.
  2.
  3. Burned or worn electrodes may be caused by:

    Advanced ignition timing

    Loose spark plug

    Plug heat range too hot

    Insufficient cooling

  4.
  5. Fouled plug may be caused by:

    Retarded ignition timing

    Oil in combustion chamber

    Incorrect spark plug gap

    Plug heat range too cold

    Excessive idling/low speed running

    Clogged air cleaner element

    Deteriorated ignition coils

  6.

Removal & Installation

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Remove the engine acoustic cover.
  4.
  5. For RH bank plugs only, perform the following:
    1. Release locking clips and disconnect multiplugs from plug top coils.
    2.
    3. Remove 6 bolts securing plug top coils to RH camshaft cover and remove coils.

  7. For LH bank plugs, tag, then disconnect the wires from the spark plugs.
  8.
  9. Using a 16mm plug socket, remove spark plugs from both cylinder heads.
  10.

To install:

  1. Set gap of each new spark plug to 1.00 mm.
  2.
  3. Install the spark plugs and tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  4.
  5. For the LH bank, connect the leads.
  6.
  7. For the RH bank, perform the following:
    1. Fit plug top coils to spark plugs.
    2.
    3. Fit bolts securing plug top coils to RH camshaft cover and tighten to 6.5 ft. lbs. (9 Nm).
    4.
    5. Connect multiplugs to plug top coils and secure with locking clips.
    6.

  8.
  9. Install the engine acoustic cover.
  10.
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
  12.

WARNING
Do not cross-thread the spark plugs when installing them, or you may damage the cylinder head, causing expensive repairs. Use only the proper grade and type of spark plugs, to avoid misfiring problems and/or engine overheating.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Tag and disconnect the spark plug wires from the spark plugs.
  4.
  5. Remove the 8 spark plugs.
  6.
  7. Make sure the gap of the new spark plugs 0.038-0.042 in. (0.5-1.5mm).
    WARNING
Do not try to clean or adjust the spark plug gap of a used plug. If a spark plug problem exists, try substituting any suspected defective spark plug(s) with new one(s).
