CAUTION
These models covered are equipped with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), which uses an air bag. Whenever working near any of the SRS components, such as the impact sensors, the air bag module, steering column and instrument panel, disable the SRS and refer to the precautions in the Chassis Electrical Section.

  1. Make sure the steering wheel is in the center position (wheels in the straight ahead position)
  2.  
  3. Remove the key from the ignition.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the negative battery cable first, then the positive cable.
  6.  
  7. Wait 10-20 minutes for the back-up power to discharge. Do NOT proceed until the back-up power is discharged from the SRS system!
    1. Remove the 2 Torx® bolts holding the airbag module to steering wheel.
    2.  
    3. Release the airbag module from the steering wheel.
      WARNING
      Do not let the airbag module to hang by the airbag harness.

    4.  
    5. Disconnect the SRS connector from air bag module.
    6.  
    7. Remove the air bag module and place, FACING UP, on a suitable workbench, or other safe, flat location.
      CAUTION
      Always store the airbag module with the deployment side facing up. If it is stored deployment side down, accidental deployment will propel the airbag module with enough force to cause serious personal injury.

  9. Disconnect multiplug from rotary coupler.
  10.  
  11. Restrain steering wheel and loosen self locking nut securing steering wheel to column.
  12.  
  13. Pull steering wheel from column splines.
  14.  
  15. Remove and discard self-locking nut.
  16.  
  17. Remove steering wheel from the shaft

  19. Attach a piece of tape across edge of the rotary coupler (8) to retain correct setting.

  21. If necessary (i.e. installing a new steering wheel), disassemble the steering wheel, as follows:
    1. Using a broad round edged tool, carefully pry the horn switches from steering wheel.
    2.  
    3. Note the installed position, then disconnect the 2 Lucar connectors and remove horn switch.
    4.  
    5. Repeat for other horn switch.
    6.  
    7. Disconnect the multiplugs from cruise control (if equipped) and radio control switches.
    8.  
    9. Release the harness from clips and remove harness.
    10.  
    11. On models with cruise control: Remove 2 screws securing cruise control switches to steering wheel.
    12.  
    13. On models with cruise control: Remove cruise control switches from steering wheel.
    14.  
    15. Remove the 2 screws securing radio switches to steering wheel.
    16.  
    17. Remove the radio switches from steering wheel.

To install:

  1. If removed, install the following components to the steering wheel:
    1. Fit radio switches to steering wheel and secure with screws.
    2.  
    3. On models with cruise control: Fit cruise control switches to steering wheel and secure with screws.
    4.  
    5. Position harness to horn, cruise control (if equipped) and radio switches and secure in clips.
    6.  
    7. Position horn switch and connect Lucar connectors.
    8.  
    9. Repeat for the other horn switch.
    10.  
    11. Connect multiplugs to cruise control and radio control switches.
    12.

  3. Remove tape from rotary coupler.
  4.  
  5. Ensure wheels are in straight ahead position and indicator cancelling cam is aligned horizontally.
  6.  
  7. Fit steering wheel to column and ensure spokes are horizontal.
  8.  
  9. Fit new self locking nut and tighten to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Connect multiplug to rotary coupler.
  12.  
  13. Install the driver-s side airbag, as follows:
    1. Position airbag module and fit connector with harness pointing upwards.
      NOTE
      If the airbag module is to be replaced, the bar code of the new module must be recorded.

    2.  
    3. Install the airbag module to steering wheel and tighten the Torx® bolts to 7 ft. lbs. (9 Nm).
    4.

  15. Connect the positive, then the negative battery cables.
  16.

    1. Loosen the 2 Torx® bolts securing air bag module to steering wheel.
      NOTE
      The Torx® bolts will remain in place even when loosened. They are shown removed in the illustration for clarification purposes.

    3. Release air bag module from steering wheel.
      WARNING
      Never let the air bag module to hang by the air bag harness!

    4.  
    5. Detach the electrical connector from the air bag module.
    6.  
    7. Remove air bag module and place, FACING UP, on a suitable workbench, or other safe, flat location.
      CAUTION
      Always store the airbag module with the deployment side facing up. If it is stored deployment side down, accidental deployment will propel the airbag module with enough force to cause serious personal injury.

  11. Detach the horn connector.

  13. Secure the steering wheel, then loosen the self locking nut holding the steering wheel to the column.
  14.  
  15. Release steering wheel from column.
  16.  
  17. Remove and discard self locking nut.
  18.  
  19. Remove steering wheel.
  20.  
  21. Attach a piece of tape across the edge of the rotary coupler to retain the proper setting.

  23. If necessary (i.e. installing a new steering wheel), disassemble the steering wheel, as follows:
    1. Release 2 clips securing each horn button to steering wheel.
    2.  
    3. Remove screw securing horn earth lead to steering wheel.
    4.  
    5. Disconnect the radio and cruise control connectors.
    6.  
    7. Remove 2 screws securing radio switches to steering wheel.
    8.  
    9. Remove radio switches from steering wheel.
    10.  
    11. Remove 2 screws securing cruise control switches to steering wheel.
    12.  
    13. Remove cruise control switches from steering wheel.
    14.  
    15. Remove horns from steering wheel.

To install:

  1. If removed, install the following components to the steering wheel:
    1. Fit horn switches to steering wheel and secure with clips.
    2.  
    3. Fit and tighten screw securing horn earth lead to steering wheel.
    4.  
    5. Fit cruise control switches to steering wheel and secure with screws.
    6.  
    7. Fit radio switches to steering wheel and secure with screws.
    8.  
    9. Connect the radio and cruise control connectors.
    10.

  3. Remove the tape from rotary coupler.
  4.  
  5. Ensure wheels are in straight ahead position and indicator cancelling cam are aligned horizontally.
  6.  
  7. Position the steering wheel on the column.
  8.  
  9. Connect the horn connector.
  10.  
  11. Fit and tighten new self locking nut securing steering wheel to column to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the driver-s side airbag, as follows:
    NOTE
    If the airbag module is to be replaced, the bar code of the new module must be recorded.

    1. Position air bag module and attach the connector.
    2.  
    3. Position the air bag module to the steering wheel and tighten the Torx® bolts to 7 ft. lbs. (9 Nm).
    4.

  15. Connect the positive, then the negative battery cables.
  16.

  9. Remove the driver-s airbag, as follows:
    1. Release 2 airbag retaining clips using a rod at least 50 mm (2 in.) long and not exceeding 3 mm (1/8 in.) diameter. Fit rod through each access hole in steering wheel at right angles to steering column. Locate secondary hole and carefully push on rod until clip is released.

    3. On models with a heated steering wheel: Disconnect multiplug from the heated steering wheel ECU.
    4.  
    5. Disconnect the 2 harness multiplugs and remove airbag module.
      WARNING
      NEVER let the airbag module to hang by the airbag harness.

    6.  
    7. Remove the air bag module and place, FACING UP, on a suitable workbench, or other safe, flat location.
      CAUTION
      Always store the airbag module with the deployment side facing up. If it is stored deployment side down, accidental deployment will propel the airbag module with enough force to cause serious personal injury.

    8.  
    9. Remove the 4 Torx® screws and release switch units from airbag module.
    10.  
    11. Disconnect the multiplugs from switch units and remove the switch units.
    12.

  11. On models with heated steering wheel: Disconnect the multiplug from rotary coupler.
    WARNING
    The steering wheel must be centered with the wheels in the straight ahead position. This will ensure that the rotary coupler is locked as the steering wheel is removed.

  13. Restrain the steering wheel and remove retaining bolt.
  14.  
  15. With the wheels in the straight ahead position, the bottom timing mark on the steering column must be aligned with the steering wheel mark, as shown in the accompanying illustration.
    NOTE
    The steering column timing marks are 105° apart.

  17. Note wheel to column alignment marks and remove steering wheel.

  19. If necessary (i.e. installing a new steering wheel), disassemble the steering wheel, as follows:
    1. Models with heated steering wheel: Release multiplugs from clips on steering wheel and ECU, disconnect multiplug and remove the heated steering wheel ECU.
    2.  
    3. Remove 4 screws securing steering wheel trim and remove trim pieces.
    4.  
    5. Remove airbag retainers.
    6.

To install:

  1. If removed, install the following:
    1. Fit airbag retainers.
    2.  
    3. Fit trim and secure with screws.
    4.  
    5. Models with heated steering wheel: Position heated steering wheel ECU, connect multiplug and fit ECU into location. Fit multiplugs into clips.
    6.

  3. Ensure wheels are straight ahead and rotary coupler is locked in correct position.
  4.  
  5. Carefully fit steering wheel, engage coupler and align to column.
  6.  
  7. Fit steering wheel retaining bolt and tighten to 46 ft. lbs. (63 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Models with heated steering wheel: Connect multiplug to rotary coupler.
  10.  
  11. Install the drivers airbag, as follows:
    NOTE
    If the SRS component is to be replaced, the bar code of the new unit must be recorded.

    1. Position switch units and connect multiplugs.
    2.  
    3. Fit switch units to airbag module and tighten the Torx® screws to 1.8 ft. lbs. (2.5 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Position airbag module and connect multiplugs.
      NOTE
      If the airbag module is to be replaced, the bar code of the new module must be recorded.

    6.  
    7. Models with heated steering wheel: Connect multiplug to the heated steering wheel ECU.
    8.  
    9. Position the airbag module on the steering wheel, then carefully push to secure.
    10.

  13. Connect the positive, then the negative battery cables.
