Fig. Testing the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) switch

  1. Partially soak the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor in the water and warm up the water.
  2.
  3. Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance between the terminals.
  4.
  5. The measurements should read 2.32-2.59 kilohms at approximately 68°F (20°C), or 0.310-0.326 kilohms at approximately 176°F (80°C).
  6.
  7. If the result is not as specified, replace the sensor.
    NOTE
When checking the sensor in the water, keep the terminals dry. After the check, wipe the sensor dry.

  8.

  1. Drain engine coolant.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the ECT sensor connector.
  4.
  5. Using a 19 mm deep socket wrench, remove the ECT sensor and gasket.
  6.
  7. Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance between the terminals.
  8.
  9. If the resistance is not as specified, replace the ECT sensor.
