1MZ-FE Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine undercovers
     
    2 front exhaust pipe stay bolts
     
    Front pipe from the center pipe
     
    3 nuts and the front pipe
     
    Oxygen (O2) sensor at the right side manifold
     
    3 mounting nuts and lift off the outside heat insulator
     
    6 nuts and lift off the right side manifold and gasket
     
    Left side heat insulator
     
    6 nuts and lift off the left side manifold and gaskets
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Right manifold with a new gasket. Tighten the nuts to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm).
     
    Outer insulator
     
    Left manifold. Use a new gasket. Tighten the nuts to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm).
     
    Outer insulator
     
    Front exhaust pipe and tighten the manifold-to-pipe nuts to 46 ft. lbs. (62 Nm). Tighten the pipe-to-converter nuts to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).
     
    O2sensor
     
    Undercovers
     
    Battery cable
     

  2.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine undercovers
     
    2 front exhaust pipe stay bolts
     
    Front pipe from the center pipe
     
    3 nuts and the front pipe
     
    Oxygen (O 2 ) sensor at the right side manifold
     
    3 mounting nuts and lift off the outside heat insulator
     
    6 nuts and lift off the right side manifold and gasket
     
    Left side heat insulator
     
    6 nuts and lift off the left side manifold and gaskets
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Right manifold with a new gasket. Tighten the nuts to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm).
     
    Outer insulator
     
    Left manifold. Use a new gasket. Tighten the nuts to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm).
     
    Outer insulator
     
    Front exhaust pipe and tighten the manifold-to-pipe nuts to 46 ft. lbs. (62 Nm). Tighten the pipe-to-converter nuts to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).
     
    O 2 sensor
     
    Undercovers
     
    Battery cable
     

  2.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine undercovers
     
    2 front exhaust pipe stay bolts
     
    Front pipe from the center pipe
     
    3 nuts and the front pipe
     
    Oxygen (O 2 ) sensor at the right side manifold
     
    3 mounting nuts and lift off the outside heat insulator
     
    6 nuts and lift off the right side manifold and gasket
     
    Left side heat insulator
     
    6 nuts and lift off the left side manifold and gaskets
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Right manifold with a new gasket. Tighten the nuts to 36 ft. lbs. (46 Nm).
     
    Outer insulator
     
    Left manifold. Use a new gasket. Tighten the nuts to 36 ft. lbs. (46 Nm).
     
    Outer insulator
     
    Front exhaust pipe and tighten the manifold-to-pipe nuts to 46 ft. lbs. (62 Nm). Tighten the pipe-to-converter nuts to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).
     
    O 2 sensor

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.

  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Coolant
     
    Camshaft timing pulleys
     
    Cooling fan hydraulic pump, on the SC 400
     
    Accelerator, throttle control and cruise control actuator cables
     
    High tension cord cover and the right side ignition coil
     
    Water inlet housing mounting bolts
     
    Water bypass hose from the Idle Speed Control (ISC) valve
     
    Water inlet and inlet housing assemblies
     
    O-ring from the water inlet housing
     
    Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) pipe
     
    Vacuum Switching Valve (VSV) connector
     
    Vacuum pipe hose
     
    EGR water bypass pipe
     
    Fuel pressure VSV
     
    EGR vacuum hoses and the EGR VSV
     
    Water bypass pipe hose from the ISC valve
     
    Water bypass joint hose
     
    Vacuum pipe hoses
     
    EGR gas temperature sensor
     
    EGR valve adapter
     
    Fuel pressure regulator vacuum hose
     
    Air intake chamber vacuum hose
     
    Vacuum hose from the Evaporative Emission (EVAP) BVSV
     
    Mounting bolts, hoses and the vacuum pipe
     
    ISC valve
     
    Throttle body sensor connectors and the water bypass pipe from the rear water bypass joint
     
    Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) valve hose
     
    Throttle body and gasket
     
    Accelerator cable bracket and the brake booster vacuum union and hose
     
    Cold start injector connector and the cold start injector tube from the right side delivery pipe, if equipped
     
    Check connector from the intake chamber and remove the mounting nuts and bolts
     
    Air intake chamber and the cold start injector, tube and wire assembly, if equipped
     
    Engine wire from the intake manifold and from the right side cylinder head
     
    Heater hoses
     
    Delivery pipes and the fuel injectors
     
    Mounting bolts and nuts. Lift up the intake manifold
     
    Front and rear water bypass joint
     
    Front exhaust pipe and the main catalytic converters. Lower the vehicle.
     
    Right side Oxygen (O2) sensor
     
    Mounting bolts and nuts and remove the right side exhaust manifold.
     
    Oil dipstick and guide
     
    Left side O2sensor
     
    Mounting bolts and nuts
     
    Left side exhaust manifold
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Right side exhaust manifold with a new gasket (the painted marks should face the manifold) and tighten the mounting bolts to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm).
     
    Right side O2sensor
     
    Left side exhaust manifold with a new gasket (the painted marks should face the manifold) and tighten the mounting bolts to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm)
     
    Left side O2sensor
     
    Oil dipstick and guide. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
     
    Catalytic converters and front exhaust pipe. Lower the vehicle.
     
    Front and rear water bypass joints. Tighten the mounting bolts to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
     
    Intake manifold, using new gaskets. Tighten the mounting nuts and bolts to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
     
    Delivery pipes and fuel injectors
     
    Fuel return pipe with new gaskets. Tighten the union bolt to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
     
    Fuel hoses and the injector connectors
     
    Engine wire to the delivery pipes
     
    Connectors on the left side delivery pipe
     
    ECT sensor
     
    Cold start injector time switch
     
    Water temperature sender gauge connectors
     
    Heater hoses and engine wire bracket
     
    Engine wire to the bracket.
     
    Cold start injector, tube and wire assembly. Tighten the mounting bolts to 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm), if equipped.
     
    Air intake chamber with new gaskets and tighten the mounting bolts to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
     
    Cold start injector tube to the right side delivery pipe and tighten the union bolt to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm), if equipped.
     
    Cold start injector connector, if necessary
     
    Accelerator cable bracket
     
    Brake booster union and connect the vacuum hose. Tighten the union bolt to 22 ft. lbs. (29 Nm).
     
    Water bypass hose to the throttle body and the PCV hose to the cylinder head cover.
     
    Throttle body, using a new gasket. Tighten the mounting bolts to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
     
    Water bypass pipe
     
    Sensor connectors
     
    Idle Speed Control (ISC) valve and tighten the mounting bolts to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
     
    Water bypass hose.
     
    Vacuum pipe and the assorted hoses
     
    Remaining components.
     
    Adjust the accelerator cable, the automatic transmission throttle cable and the cruise control actuator cable.
     
    Cooling fan hydraulic pump on the SC 400
     
    Camshaft timing pulleys
     
    Coolant
     
    Negative battery cable

  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Delivery pipes and the fuel injectors
     
    Mounting bolts and nuts. Lift up the intake manifold
     
    Front and rear water bypass joint
     
    Front exhaust pipe and the main catalytic converters. Lower the vehicle.
     
    Right side Oxygen (O 2 ) sensor
     
    Mounting bolts and nuts and remove the right side exhaust manifold.
     
    Oil dipstick and guide
     
    Left side O 2 sensor
     
    Mounting bolts and nuts
     
    Left side exhaust manifold
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Right side exhaust manifold with a new gasket (the painted marks should face the manifold) and tighten the mounting bolts to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm).
     
    Right side O 2 sensor
     
    Left side exhaust manifold with a new gasket (the painted marks should face the manifold) and tighten the mounting bolts to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm).
     
    Left side O 2 sensor
     
    Oil dipstick and guide. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
     
    Catalytic converters and front exhaust pipe. Lower the vehicle.
     
    Front and rear water bypass joints. Tighten the mounting bolts to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
     
    Intake manifold, using new gaskets. Tighten the mounting nuts and bolts to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
     
    Delivery pipes and fuel injectors
     
    Fuel return pipe with new gaskets. Tighten the union bolt to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
     
    Fuel hoses and the injector connectors
     
    Engine wire to the delivery pipes
     
    Connectors on the left side delivery pipe
     
    ECT sensor
     
    Cold start injector time switch
     
    Water temperature sender gauge connectors
     
    Heater hoses and engine wire bracket
     
    Engine wire to the bracket.
     
    Cold start injector, tube and wire assembly. Tighten the mounting bolts to 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm), if equipped.
     
    Air intake chamber with new gaskets and tighten the mounting bolts to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
     
    Cold start injector tube to the right side delivery pipe and tighten the union bolt to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm), if equipped.
     
    Cold start injector connector, if necessary.
     
    Accelerator cable bracket
     
    Brake booster union and connect the vacuum hose. Tighten the union bolt to 22 ft. lbs. (29 Nm).
     
    Water bypass hose to the throttle body and the PCV hose to the cylinder head cover.
     
    Throttle body, using a new gasket. Tighten the mounting bolts to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
     
    Water bypass pipe
     
    Sensor connectors
     
    Idle Speed Control (ISC) valve and tighten the mounting bolts to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
     
    Water bypass hose.
     
    Vacuum pipe and the assorted hoses

    Mounting bolts and nuts and remove the right side exhaust manifold.
     
    Oil dipstick and guide
     
    Left side O 2 sensor
     
    Mounting bolts and nuts

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Right side exhaust manifold with a new gasket (the painted marks should face the manifold) and tighten the mounting bolts to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm).
     
    Right side O 2 sensor
     
    Left side exhaust manifold with a new gasket (the painted marks should face the manifold) and tighten the mounting bolts to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm)
     
    Left side O 2 sensor
     
    Oil dipstick and guide. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
     
    Catalytic converters and front exhaust pipe. Lower the vehicle.
     
    Front and rear water bypass joints. Tighten the mounting bolts to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
     
    Intake manifold, using new gaskets. Tighten the mounting nuts and bolts to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
     
    Delivery pipes and fuel injectors
     
    Fuel return pipe with new gaskets. Tighten the union bolt to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
     
    Fuel hoses and the injector connectors

    Throttle body, using a new gasket. Tighten the mounting bolts to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).

    Adjust the accelerator cable, the automatic transmission throttle cable and the cruise control actuator cable.
     
    Camshaft timing pulleys
     
    Coolant
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  

2jz-GE Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine undercovers
     
    No. 2 front exhaust pipe bolts and disconnect it from the front exhaust pipe. Loosen the 4 nuts, then remove the front pipe.
     
    Both Oxygen (O 2 ) sensors at the manifold
     
    4 mounting nuts and lift off the outside heat insulator
     
    4 nuts and disconnect the manifolds from the pipe. Loosen the mounting bolts and remove the 2 manifolds and the gasket.
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Manifolds with a new gasket. Tighten the nuts to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
     
    Outer insulator. Tighten the nuts to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
     
    No. 2 front pipe. Tighten the nuts to 46 ft. lbs. (62 Nm).
     
    Front exhaust pipe. Tighten the bolts/nuts to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).
     
    O 2 sensors
     
    Undercovers
     
    Battery cable
     

  2.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine cover
     
    Air cleaner assembly, as needed for access
     
    Oxygen sensor wiring connectors
     
    Front exhaust pipe support bracket
     
    Front exhaust pipe from manifold
     
    Exhaust manifold (8 nuts accessible with a deep-socket wrench)
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Position the exhaust manifold in place, with new gaskets. Torque the nuts, in an alternating pattern, to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Reinstall the remaining components in reverse of the removal procedure.
  4.  

3MZ-FE Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable. Wait at least 90 seconds before performing any other work
     
    V-bank cover
     
    Air cleaner assembly (if needed for access to exhaust manifold)
     
    Front and rear exhaust pipe No. 1 support brackets
     
    Front exhaust pipe assembly
     
    Exhaust pipe No. 1 support bracket
     
    Oxygen sensor wiring connectors
     
    Exhaust manifold heat insulator No. 1
     
    Manifold converter insulator No. 3
     
    Exhaust manifold heat insulator No. 2
     
    7 nuts in sequential order and lift off exhaust manifold and gasket

To install:

  1. Position the exhaust manifold in place, with new gaskets. Torque the nuts, in sequential order, to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm). Retighten nuts 1 and 2 as illustrated.
  2.  
  3. Reinstall the remaining components in reverse of the removal procedure.
  4.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine under cover
     
    Coolant
     
    V-bank cover
     
    Air cleaner assembly (if needed for access to exhaust manifold)
     

  4.  
  5. Remove cylinder heads. See CYLINDER HEADS in this section.
  6.  
  7. Remove 4 bolts and heat shield from exhaust manifold.
  8.  
  9. Remove 8 nuts and remove exhaust manifold and gasket.
  10.  

To install:

  1. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Install new manifold gasket and new retaining nuts. Torque the exhaust manifold nuts to 32 ft. lbs. (44 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the manifold heat shields.
  4.  
  5. Refill the engine cooling system. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  6.  

4.0L Engine

For exhaust manifold Removal & Installation, refer to the procedure under Intake Manifold.

4.7L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, please familiarize yourself with safety procedures.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Battery
     
    Power distribution center
     
    Battery tray
     
    Windshield washer fluid bottle
     
    Air cleaner assembly
     
    Accessory drive belt
     
    A/C compressor
     
    A/C accumulator bracket
     
    Heater hoses
     
    Exhaust manifold heat shields
     
    Exhaust Y-pipe
     
    Starter motor
     
    Exhaust manifolds
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Exhaust manifolds, using new gaskets. Torque the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm), starting with the inner bolts and work out to the ends.
     
    Starter motor
     
    Exhaust Y-pipe
     
    Exhaust manifold heat shields
     
    Heater hoses
     
    A/C accumulator bracket
     
    A/C compressor
     
    Accessory drive belt
     
    Air cleaner assembly
     
    Windshield washer fluid bottle
     
    Battery tray
     
    Power distribution center
     
    Battery
     

  2.  
  3. Fill and bleed the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Start the engine, check for leaks and repair if necessary.
  6.  

4gr-Fse And 2gr-Fse Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable. Wait at least 90 seconds before performing any other work
     
    Cool air intake duct seal
     
    Left and right engine room side covers
     
    V-bank cover
     
    Engine under cover
     
    No. 2 engine under cover (2WD)
     
    Left and right rear engine under cover (2WD)
     
    Front exhaust pipe assembly
     
    Front lower suspension member protector (2WD)
     
    Exhaust pipe No. 1 support bracket (4GR-FSE with automatic transmission)
     

  4.  
  5. Remove the oil dipstick guide assembly as follows:
    1. Remove the oil level gauge.
    2.  
    3. Remove the bolt, then remove the No. 2 oil dipstick guide.
    4.  
    5. Remove the O-ring from the No. 2 oil dipstick guide.
    6.  
    7. Remove the bolt and clamp (2WD), then remove the No. 1 oil dipstick guide.
    8.  
    9. Remove the O-ring from the No. 1 oil dipstick guide.

      Oxygen sensor wiring connectors
       
      6 nuts, exhaust manifold and gasket (left and right sides)

To install:

  1. Install the exhaust manifold(s) as follows:
    1. Install a new exhaust manifold gasket.
    2.  
    3. Install the exhaust manifold with 6 new nuts and torque to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm).
      WARNING
      Do not damage the stud bolt when installing the exhaust manifold. Be sure to tighten either of nuts A first as shown in the illustration.

      Fig. When tightening the exhaust manifold nuts, start with nuts A as shown(left side illustrated, right side the same-2.5L (4GR-FSE), 3.0L (3GR-FSE) and 3.5L (2GR-FSE) engines

  3. Install the oil dipstick guide assembly as follows:
    1. Install a new O-ring to the oil dipstick guide.
    2.  
    3. Apply a light coat of engine oil to the O-ring.
    4.  
    5. Push in the oil dipstick guide end into the guide hole.
    6.  
    7. Install the No. 1 oil dipstick guide with the bolt and torque to 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm).
    8.  
    9. Connect the clamp (2WD).
    10.  
    11. Install the No. 2 oil dipstick guide with the bolt and torque to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm).
    12.  
    13. Install the oil dipstick.

  5. Install or connect the following:

    Oxygen sensor wiring connectors
     
    Front lower suspension member protector (2WD) and 4 bolts. Torque the 4 bolts to 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
     
    Front exhaust pipe assembly
     
    Left and right rear engine under cover (2WD)
     
    No. 2 engine under cover (2WD)
     
    Engine under cover
     
    V-bank cover
     
    Left and right engine room side covers
     
    Cool air intake duct seal
     
    Negative battery cable

  7. Start the engine and check for exhaust leaks and proper operation.
