Front Crankshaft Seal

Removal & Installation



1mz-FE And 3mz-FE Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Wait at least 90 seconds before performing any other work.
  4.  
  5. Remove the right front wheel.
  6.  
  7. Remove the right front fender apron seal.
  8.  
  9. Remove the accessory drive belts.
  10.  
  11. Remove the engine moving control rod.
  12.  
  13. Remove the right engine mounting stay No. 2.
  14.  
  15. Remove the alternator bracket No. 2.
  16.  
  17. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
  18.  
  19. Remove timing belt No. 1 and No. 2 front covers.
  20.  
  21. Remove the transverse engine mounting bracket.
  22.  
  23. Remove timing belt guide No. 2.
  24.  
  25. Remove the timing belt.
  26.  
  27. Remove the timing belt plate.
  28.  
  29. Install the pulley bolt to the crankshaft and using SST 09950-50013 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05010), remove the crankshaft timing pulley. Before using SST, apply lubricating oil on the threads and tip of the center bolt 150.
    NOTE
    Do not scratch the sensor part of the crankshaft timing pulley.

  31. Using a knife, cut off the oil seal lip.

  33. Using a screwdriver with taping its tip, pry out the oil seal.
    NOTE
    After the removal, check if the crankshaft is not damaged. If it is damaged, mend it with a sandpaper (#400).

To install:

  1. Apply MP grease to a new oil seal lip.
  2.  
  3. Using SST 09223-00010 and a hammer, tap in the oil seal until its surface is flush with the oil pump edge.
    NOTE
    Be careful not to tap the oil seal slantingly. Wipe off extra grease on the crankshaft.

  5. Align the pulley set key with the key groove of the timing pulley, and slide on the timing pulley. Do not scratch the sensor part of the crankshaft timing pulley.
  6.  
  7. Install the timing belt plate with the bolt and tighten to 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Inspect the timing belt for any damage, excessive wear, cracking or chunks missing.
  10.  
  11. Install the timing belt.
  12.  
  13. Install timing belt guide No. 2.
  14.  
  15. Install the transverse engine mounting bracket. Tighten the fasteners to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Install timing belt No. 1 and No. 2 front covers.
  18.  
  19. Install the crankshaft pulley.
  20.  
  21. Install the alternator bracket No. 2 and tighten the bolts to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).
  22.  
  23. Install the right engine mounting stay No. 2.
  24.  
  25. Install the engine moving control rod.
  26.  
  27. Install the accessory drive belts.
  28.  
  29. Inspect the accessory drive belts for tension and deflection.
  30.  
  31. Install the right front fender apron seal.
  32.  
  33. Install the right front wheel.
  34.  
  35. Inspect for oil leaks.
  36.  
  37. Connect the negative battery cable.
  38.  

3.0L (2jz-Ge), 2.5L (4gr-Fse), 3.5L (2gr-Fse) And 4.0L (1uz-FE) Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Wait at least 90 seconds before performing any other work.
  4.  
  5. Remove the radiator assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the accessory drive belt.
  8.  
  9. Remove the crankshaft pulley.

  11. Using a screwdriver with its tip taped, pry out the timing chain case oil seal.
    NOTE
    After the removal, check the crankshaft for damage. If it is damaged, smooth the surface with 400-grit sandpaper.

To install:

  1. Using SST 09223-22010, 09506-35010 and a hammer, tap in the oil seal until its surface is flush with the rear oil seal retainer edge. Keep the lip free of foreign matter. Do not tap the oil seal at an angle.
  2.  
  3. Install the crankshaft pulley.
  4.  
  5. Install the accessory drive belt.
  6.  
  7. Install the radiator assembly.
  8.  
  9. Inspect for oil leaks.
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
  12.  

4.3L (3uz-FE) Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Wait at least 90 seconds before performing any other work.
  4.  
  5. Remove the timing belt.
  6.  
  7. Using SST 09950-50013 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05021), remove the timing pulley.
    NOTE
    Do not turn the timing pulley.

  9. Using a knife, cut the oil seal lip.
  10.  
  11. Using a screwdriver with its tip taped, pry out the oil seal.
  12.  
  13. After the removal, check if the crankshaft is not damaged. If it is damaged, smooth the surface with 400-grit sandpaper.
  14.  

To install:

  1. Apply MP grease to a new oil seal lip. Keep the lip free from foreign materials.
  2.  
  3. Using SST 09316-60011 (09316-00011) and a hammer, tap in the oil seal until its surface is flush with the oil pump edge. Wipe off any extra grease on the crankshaft. Be careful not to tap the oil seal at an angle.
  4.  
  5. Align the timing pulley set key with the key groove of the pulley.
  6.  
  7. Face the timing pulley-s flange side inward. Using SST 09223-46011 and a hammer, tap in the timing pulley.
  8.  
  9. Install the timing belt.
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
  12.
