Removal & Installation



4gr-Fse & 2gr-Fse Engines

NOTE
The No. 1 oil pan cannot be removed with the engine in the vehicle. The engine and transmission must be removed as a unit, then separated. See ENGINE ASSEMBLY section. It may be possible to remove the No. 2 oil pan from the vehicle while the engine is still in the vehicle.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.

  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable from the battery
     
    Engine/transmission assembly
     
    Oil filter element
     
    Oil filter bracket (AWD)

  7. Remove the No. 2 oil pan sub-assembly as follows:
    1. Remove the 15 bolts and 2 nuts (2WD).
    2.  
    3. Remove the 14 bolts and 2 nuts (AWD).
    4.  
    5. Insert the blade of a prying tool between the oil pans. Cut through the applied sealer and remove the No. 2 oil pan sub-assembly.
      NOTE
      Be careful not to damage the contact surfaces of the oil pans.

  9. Remove the oil with strainer pipe sub-assembly (AWD) as follows:
    1. Remove the 3 mounting nuts.
    2.  
    3. Remove the oil with strainer pipe and gasket.
    4.

  11. Remove the oil pan sub-assembly as follows:
    1. Remove the 16 bolts and 2 nuts.
      NOTE
      Be sure to clean the bolts and stud bolts and check the threads for cracks or other damage.

    3. Remove the oil pan by prying between the oil pan and cylinder block with a screwdriver.
      WARNING
      Be careful not to damage the contact surfaces of the cylinder block and oil pan.

    5. Remove the 2 O-rings.

To install:

  1. Install the oil pan sub-assembly as follows:
    1. When replacing a stud bolt, install it by using an E6 "torx" socket wrench. Torque the stud bolt to 35 inch lbs. (4 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Apply seal packing in a continuous line of 0.118 to 0.156 inches (3.0 to 4.0mm) in diameter.
      NOTE
      Remove any oil from the contact surface. Install the oil pan within 3 minutes after applying seal packing. Do not start the engine for at least 2 hours after installing.

    5. Install the oil pan with the 16 bolts and 2 nuts. Torque the A bolts to 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm). Torque the remaining bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm).

  3. Install the oil with strainer pipe sub-assembly (AWD) as follows:
    1. Install a new gasket.
    2.  
    3. Install the oil with strainer pipe with the 3 nuts. Torque to 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm).

  5. Install the No. 2 oil pan sub-assembly as follows:
    1. Apply seal packing in a continuous line of 0.118 to 0.156 inches (3.0 to 4.0mm) in diameter.
      NOTE
      Remove any oil from the contact surface. Install the oil pan No. 2 within 3 minutes after applying seal packing. Do not start the engine for at least 2 hours after installing.

    3. Install the oil pan with the 15 bolts and 2 nuts (2WD). Torque the bolts to 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm).

    5. Install the oil pan with the 14 bolts and 2 nuts (AWD). Torque the bolts to 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm).

  7. Install or connect the following:

    New gasket and oil filter bracket (AWD). Torque the bolt and 2 nuts to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm).
     
    Oil filter element
     
    Engine/transmission assembly
     
    Negative battery cable from the battery
     
    Engine with oil
