Removal & Installation



1MZ-FE Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable from the battery
     
    Right front wheel
     
    Fender apron seal
     
    Engine undercover
     
    Engine oil
     
    Front exhaust pipe
     
    Front exhaust pipe bracket from the No. 1 oil pan
     
    Alternator drive belt from the engine
     
    Air conditioning compressor from the engine, without disconnecting the compressor lines
     
    Power steering pump drive belt and adjusting strut
     
    Timing belt from the engine
     
    Timing belt pulleys
     
    Rear timing belt cover from the engine by removing the wire clamps and 6 bolts
     
    Air conditioning compressor housing bracket by removing the 3 bolts.
     
    10 bolts and 2 nuts to the No. 2 oil pan
     
    No. 2 oil pan from the engine
     
    Oil strainer and gasket from the engine by removing the 3 nuts
     
    No. 1 oil pan
     
    Baffle plate from the No. 1 oil pan
     
    Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor by removing the connector and bolt
     
    Oil pump. Make a note of the position of the each bolt. When replacing the bolts into the oil pump body, place each bolt in the position from which it was removed.
     
    O-ring from the cylinder block
     
    Plug, gasket, spring and relief valve from the oil pump body
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Driven rotors, drive, pump body cover, then install the 9 screws
     
    Relief valve, spring, gasket and the plug to the oil pump body
     
    New O-ring on the cylinder block
     
    RTV sealant to the oil pump as shown

    Pump on the engine block. Be sure to engage the spline teeth of the oil pump drive gear with the large teeth of the crankshaft.
     
    The 9 bolts to the oil pump and uniformly tighten the bolts in several passes. Tighten the bolts to: 10mm: 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm); 12mm: 14 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
     
    CKP sensor and bolt. Tighten the bolt to 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
     
    Baffle plate to the No. 1 oil pan and tighten to 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
     
    No. 1 oil pan Uniformly tighten the bolts and nuts in several passes: 10mm-69 inch lbs. (8 Nm); 12mm-14 ft. lbs. (20 Nm); 14mm-27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm)
     
    Flywheel housing undercover with the 2 bolts. Tighten the bolts to 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
     
    Oil strainer with the 3 nuts. Tighten the nuts to 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
     
    No. 2 oil pan
     
    RTV sealant to the oil pan and engine block
     
    No. 2 oil pan. Uniformly tighten the bolts and nuts in several passes to 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
     
    Remaining components
     
    Right front wheel and lower the vehicle
     
    Engine with oil
     
    Negative battery cable to the battery
     

  2.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable from the battery
     
    Right front wheel
     
    Fender apron seal
     
    Engine undercover
     
    Engine oil
     
    Front exhaust pipe
     
    Front exhaust pipe bracket from the No. 1 oil pan
     
    Alternator drive belt from the engine
     
    Air conditioning compressor from the engine, without disconnecting the compressor lines
     
    Power steering pump drive belt and adjusting strut
     
    Timing belt from the engine
     
    Timing belt pulleys
     
    Rear timing belt cover from the engine by removing the wire clamps and 6 bolts
     
    Air conditioning compressor housing bracket by removing the 3 bolts.
     
    10 bolts and 2 nuts to the No. 2 oil pan
     
    No. 2 oil pan from the engine
     
    Oil strainer and gasket from the engine by removing the 3 nuts
     
    No. 1 oil pan
     
    Baffle plate from the No. 1 oil pan
     
    Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor by removing the connector and bolt
     
    Oil pump. Make a note of the position of the each bolt. When replacing the bolts into the oil pump body, place each bolt in the position from which it was removed.
     
    O-ring from the cylinder block
     
    Plug, gasket, spring and relief valve from the oil pump body
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Driven rotors, drive, pump body cover, then install the 9 screws
     
    Relief valve, spring, gasket and the plug to the oil pump body
     
    New O-ring on the cylinder block
     
    RTV sealant to the oil pump as shown

    No. 1 oil pan Uniformly tighten the bolts and nuts in several passes: 10mm-69 inch lbs. (8 Nm); 12mm-14 ft. lbs. (20 Nm); 14mm-27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm)
     
    Flywheel housing undercover with the 2 bolts. Tighten the bolts to 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
     
    Oil strainer with the 3 nuts. Tighten the nuts to 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
     
    No. 2 oil pan
     
    RTV sealant to the oil pan and engine block
     
    No. 2 oil pan. Uniformly tighten the bolts and nuts in several passes to 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
     
    Remaining components
     
    Right front wheel and lower the vehicle.
     
    Engine with oil
     
    Negative battery cable to the battery.

    No. 2 oil pan from the engine
     
    Oil strainer and gasket from the engine by removing the 3 nuts
     
    No. 1 oil pan
     
    Baffle plate from the No. 1 oil pan
     
    Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor by removing the connector and bolt
     
    Oil pump. Make a note of the position of the each bolt. When replacing the bolts into the oil pump body, place each bolt in the position from which it was removed.
     
    O-ring from the cylinder block
     
    Plug, gasket, spring and relief valve from the oil pump body

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Driven rotors, drive, pump body cover, then install the 9 screws

    New O-ring on the cylinder block
     
    RTV sealant to the oil pump as shown

    Pump on the engine block. Be sure to engage the spline teeth of the oil pump drive gear with the large teeth of the crankshaft.
     
    The 9 bolts to the oil pump and uniformly tighten the bolts in several passes. Tighten the bolts to: 10mm: 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm); 12mm: 14 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
     
    CKP sensor and bolt. Tighten the bolt to 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
     
    Baffle plate to the No. 1 oil pan and tighten to 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
     
    No. 1 oil pan Uniformly tighten the bolts and nuts in several passes: 10mm-69 inch lbs. (8 Nm); 12mm-14 ft. lbs. (20 Nm); 14mm-27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm)
     
    Flywheel housing undercover with the 2 bolts. Tighten the bolts to 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
     
    Oil strainer with the 3 nuts. Tighten the nuts to 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
     
    No. 2 oil pan
     
    RTV sealant to the oil pan and engine block
     
    No. 2 oil pan. Uniformly tighten the bolts and nuts in several passes to 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
     
    Remaining components
     
    Right front wheel and lower the vehicle
     
    Engine with oil
     
    Negative battery cable to the battery
     

  2.  

1UZ-FE & 3UZ-FE Engines

NOTE
The oil pump cannot be removed with the engine in the vehicle. The engine and transmission must be removed as a unit, then separated.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Engine/transmission assembly
     
    Timing belt
     
    Idler pulleys
     
    Crankshaft timing pulley
     
    Oil dipstick and guide
     
    Oil level sensor lead
     
    4 bolts and lift off the oil level sensor. Be careful not to drop this sensor.
     
    Main Oxygen (O2) sensor bracket, if necessary
     
    Oil filter and filter bracket assembly by removing the stud bolt and 2 nuts
     
    Engine Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor. Remove the sensor by removing the bolt.
     
    12 bolts and 2 nuts from the No. 2 oil pan
     
    No. 2 (lower) oil pan. Use a gasket-cutting tool
     
    2 bolts and 3 nuts and drop down the baffle plate
     
    Oil strainer
     
    No. 1 oil pan. There are slots for inserting the prybar.
     
    8 bolts holding the oil pump to the engine

NOTE
Make certain to observe bolt position during removal. The bolts are different lengths and sizes. Record their position for proper reassembly.

To install:


NOTE
Prior to installing the oil pump, lubricate the gears with clean engine oil.

  1. Install or connect the following:

    A 2-3mm wide (0.08-0.12 in.) bead of RTV sealant to the oil pump

    The 8 bolts in their correct locations. Tighten the bolts with 12mm heads to 12 ft. lbs. (16 Nm) and the bolts with 14mm heads to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).

    No. 1 pan. Bolts-10mm: 66 inch lbs. (8 Nm); 12mm: 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm)
     
    Oil strainer and tighten the bolts to 66 inch lbs. (8 Nm)
     
    Baffle plate and tighten the bolts and nuts to 66 inch lbs. (8 Nm)
     
    Remaining components
     
    Engine/transaxle

2.5L And 4.0L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, please familiarize yourself with safety procedures.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    If the oil pump is not to be serviced, do not disturb the position of the oil inlet tube and strainer assembly in the pump body. If the tube is moved within the pump body, a replacement tube and strainer assembly must be installed to assure an airtight seal.



    Negative battery cable
     
    Oil pan
     
    Oil pump and pickup tube

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Oil pump. Torque the mounting bolts to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).
     
    Oil pan
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  
  3. Fill the engine with the proper type and quantity of oil.
  4.  
  5. Start the engine, check for leaks and repair if necessary.
  6.  

2JZ-GE Engine

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.

  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Engine and transmission
     
    Timing belt

    Oil level sensor
     
    No. 2 (lower) oil pan
     
    Oil strainer by removing the bolt and 2 nuts
     
    Oil baffle plate by removing the 6 bolts
     
    No. 1 (upper) oil pan by removing the 22 bolts. Take note of bolt size and placement for correct re-installation.
     
    9 mounting bolts to the oil pump body. Carefully drive the pump off the cylinder block using a brass drift.
     
    2 O-rings

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    2 new O-rings in the cylinder block
     
    A18
     
    Pump and tighten the bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm)

    RTV sealant around the No. 1 oil pan
     
    No. 1 oil pan. Bolts: 12mm-15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm); 14mm-29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm)
     
    Oil baffle plate and tighten the nuts and bolts to 78 inch lbs. (9 Nm)
     
    Oil strainer and tighten the nuts and bolts to 78 inch lbs. (9 Nm)
     
    RTV sealant around the No. 2 oil pan
     
    No. 2 oil pan and tighten the bolts to 78 inch lbs. (9 Nm)
     
    Oil lever sensor with a new gasket and tighten the bolts to 48 inch lbs. (6 Nm)
     
    Oil dipstick with a new O-ring
     
    Remaining components
     
    All fluids
     
    Negative battery cable

    2 new O-rings in the cylinder block
     
    A 1 / 8 inch (3-4mm) bead of RTV sealant around the pump mating surface, taking great care around the oil passages.
     
    Pump and tighten the bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm).

    RTV sealant around the No. 1 oil pan

    No. 2 oil pan and tighten the bolts to 78 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
     
    Oil lever sensor with a new gasket and tighten the bolts to 48 inch lbs. (6 Nm).
     
    Oil dipstick with a new O-ring.
     
    Remaining components
     
    All fluids
     
    Negative battery cable.

    Pump and tighten the bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm)

    No. 2 oil pan and tighten the bolts to 78 inch lbs. (9 Nm)
     
    Oil lever sensor with a new gasket and tighten the bolts to 48 inch lbs. (6 Nm)
     
    Oil dipstick with a new O-ring
     
    Remaining components
     
    All fluids
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  

3MZ-FE Engines
  1. Follow engine oil pan removal procedure then perform the following steps.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Crankshaft position sensor
     
    Oil pump assembly
     
    9 bolts
     

  4.  
  5. Remove oil pump by prying between the oil pump and bearing cap
  6.

To install:

  1. Install the oil pump seal using proper driver.
    1. Tap in the seal until it is flush with the oil pump body
    2.  
    3. Apply multi-purpose grease to the seal lip.
    4.

  3. Install oil pump assembly
    1. Remove any old sealant from the mating surfaces
    2.  
    3. Apply a light coat of clean engine oil to the O-ring, then place it on the engine block.
    4.  
    5. Thoroughly clean the mating surface of any oil or old sealant
    6.  
    7. Apply a continuous bead of sealant on the oil pump body, making certain to surround the bolt holes.
    8.  
    9. Install the oil pump within 3 minutes after applying the sealant.
    10.

NOTE
Do NOT expose the sealant to engine oil within 2 hours after installing

  1. Align the key of the oil pump drive gear with the keyway located on the crankshaft, then slide the oil pump into place.
  2.  
  3. Install the oil pump with the 9 bolts. Tighten the bolts uniformly in several steps. Torque to: Bolt A 71 in. lbs (8.0 Nm), Bolt B14 ft lbs. (20 Nm), Bolt C 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm)

  1. Install crankshaft position sensor

  1. Follow engine oil pan removal procedure then perform the following steps.

    Crankshaft position sensor
     
    Oil pump assembly
     
    9 bolts

  5. Remove oil pump by prying between the oil pump and bearing cap
  6.  
  7. Remove the oil ring

4.7L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, please familiarize yourself with safety procedures.

  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Valve covers
     
    Front cover
     
    Timing chains and sprockets
     
    Oil pan and pickup tube
     
    Oil pump and primary timing chain tensioner
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Oil pump and primary timing chain tensioner. Torque the bolts in sequence to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).
     
    Oil pan and pickup tube
     
    Timing chains and sprockets
     
    Front cover
     
    Valve covers
     

  2.  
  3. Fill the engine with clean oil.
  4.  
  5. Start the engine, check for leaks and repair if necessary.

4gr-Fse & 2gr-Fse Engines

NOTE
The oil pump cannot be removed with the engine in the vehicle. The engine and transmission must be removed as a unit, then separated.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Engine/transmission assembly
     
    Front differential assembly (AWD)
     
    Serpentine drive belt
     
    No. 2 idler pulley
     
    Alternator
     
    A/C compressor unit, if necessary
     
    Left and right engine mounting brackets
     
    Serpentine belt tensioner
     
    Water pump pulley
     
    Fuel injector driver
     
    Intake air surge tank assembly and No. 2 surge tank stay
     
    Water hose joint
     
    Crankshaft pulley
     
    Water inlet
     
    Oil pan assembly
     
    Oil strainer
     
    No. 1 and 2 fuel pipes
     
    High pressure side fuel pump
     
    Ignition coil assembly
     
    No. 1 and 2 oil pipes
     
    Left and right cylinder head covers

  5. Remove the timing chain cover assembly as follows:
    1. Remove bolt and wiring harness clamp bracket.
    2.  
    3. Remove 25 mounting bolts and 2 mounting nuts.
    4.  
    5. Remove the timing chain cover by prying between the timing chain cover and cylinder head or cylinder block with a screwdriver.
    6.  
    7. Remove the gasket.
      NOTE
      The oil pump assembly is incorporated into the back of the timing chain cover. The oil pump assembly can be disassembled from the back of the timing chain cover for inspection purposes.

To install:

  1. Install the timing chain cover assembly as follows:
    1. Apply seal packing in a continuous line of 0.197-0.217 inches (5.0-5.5mm) in diameter to the engine at the seem where the cylinder head meets the camshaft bearing cap assembly and the cylinder head meets the cylinder block
      NOTE
      Be sure to clean, degrease and dry the contact surfaces before applying the seal packing. Install the component within 3 minutes after applying seal packing. Do not start the engine for at least 2 hours after installing.

    2.  
    3. Apply seal packing in a continuous line of 0.138-0.158 inches (3.5-4.0mm) in diameter to the timing chain cover
    4.  
    5. Install a new gasket
    6.  
    7. Align the oil pump drive rotor spline and the crankshaft. Install the spline and chain cover to the crankshaft.

    9. Temporarily tighten the timing chain cover with the 25 bolts and nuts.
    10.  
    11. Fully tighten the 3 bolts shown in the illustration. Torque bolt A to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm). Torque the 2 remaining bolts to 15 ft. lbs (21 Nm).

    13. Fully tighten the 3 bolts shown in the illustration. Torque the bolts to 15 ft. lbs (21 Nm).

    15. Fully tighten the 7 bolts and 2 nuts shown in the illustration. Torque the bolts to 15 ft. lbs (21 Nm).

      Be sure to tighten the bolts and nuts in order of upper to lower.

    17. Fully tighten the 12 bolts shown in the illustration. Torque the bolts to 15 ft. lbs (21 Nm).
      NOTE
      Be sure to tighten the bolts in order of lower to upper.

    19. Install the bolt and wiring harness bracket. Torque the bolts to 7 ft. lbs (10 Nm).

    Crankshaft pulley. Torque the bolt to 192 ft. lbs (260 Nm).
     
    Water hose joint
     
    Intake air surge tank assembly and No. 2 surge tank stay
     
    Fuel injector driver
     
    Water pump pulley. Torque the bolt to 15 ft. lbs (21 Nm).
     
    Serpentine belt tensioner
     
    Left and right engine mounting brackets
     
    A/C compressor unit, if necessary
     
    Alternator

    Front differential assembly (AWD)
