Rear Main Seal

Removal & Installation



  1. If the rear oil seal retainer is removed from the cylinder block, perform the following:


    1. Using a screwdriver and hammer, tap out the oil seal.
    2.  
    3. Using SST 09223-15030, 09950-70010 (09951-07100) and a hammer, tap in a new oil seal until its surface is flush with the rear oil seal retainer edge.
    4.  
    5. Apply MP grease to the oil seal lip.
    6.

  3. If the rear seal retainer is installed on the cylinder block, perform the following:


    1. Using a knife, cut off the oil seal lip.
    2.  
    3. Using a screwdriver, pry out the oil seal.
      CAUTION
      Be careful not to damage the crankshaft. Tape the screwdriver tip.

    5. Apply MP grease to a new oil seal lip.
    6.  
    7. Using SST 09223-15030, 09950-70010 (09951-07100) and a hammer, tap in the oil seal until its surface is flush with the rear oil seal retainer edge.

3.7L, 4.7L & 5.7L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, please familiarize yourself with safety procedures.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Transmission
     
    Flexplate
     

  4.  
  5. Thread Oil Seal Remover 8506 into the rear main seal as far as possible and remove the rear main seal.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Seal Guide 8349-2 onto the crankshaft
     
    Rear main seal on the seal guide
     
    Rear main seal, using the Crankshaft Rear Oil Seal Installer 8349 and Driver Handle C-4171; tap it into place until the installer is flush with the cylinder block
     
    Flexplate. Torque the bolts to 45 ft. lbs. (60 Nm).
     
    Transmission

  3. Start the engine, check for leaks and repair if necessary.
