Bushing Replacement



The lower control arm bushings are serviced with the control arms as complete assemblies.

The control arm bushings are serviced with the control arm as an assembly.

The control arm bushings are serviced with the control arm as an assembly.

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, please familiarize yourself with safety procedures.
  2.  
  3. Support the axle with a jack stand.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheel speed sensor wiring, if equipped
     
    Lower control arm
     

  6.  

To install:


NOTE
The weight of the vehicle must be supported by the springs before tightening the control arm fasteners.

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Lower control arm
     
    Wheel speed sensor wiring, if equipped
     

  2.  
  3. Tighten the control arm bolts to the following specifications:

    Grand Cherokee: Frame bracket bolt to 115 ft. lbs. (156 Nm) and axle bracket nut to 120 ft. lbs. (163 Nm).

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Front wheel(s)
     
    Side fender apron seal
     
    Steering knuckle with the axle hub, from the vehicle
     
    Dust deflector from the knuckle
     
    Cotter pin and the nut from the ball joint stud
     

  4.  
  5. Remove the lower ball joint from the steering knuckle.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Install the lower ball joint onto the steering knuckle and tighten nut to 90 ft. lbs. (123 Nm). Install new cotter pin.
  2.  
  3. Align the hole in the dust deflector with the ABS speed sensor. Using the appropriate driver, install a new dust deflector.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Steering knuckle and hub onto the vehicle
     
    Fender apron seal
     
    Front wheel(s)
     
    Negative battery cable

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel
     
    Engine under covers
     
    Level control sensor link
     
    Front subframe brace
     
    No. 2 lower control arm
     
    Brake caliper and rotor
     
    Outer tie rod end
     
    Stabilizer bar link
     
    Lower strut bolt
     
    Lower ball joint
     
    Steering gear
     
    No. 1 lower control arm
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure, while using the following torque values:

    No. 1 lower control arm bolt: 136 ft. lbs. (184 Nm)
     
    Lower ball joint nut: 91 ft. lbs. (123 Nm)
     
    Outer tie rod end nut: 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm)
     
    Brake caliper bolts: 87 ft. lbs. (118 Nm)
     
    No. 2 control arm-to-No. 1 control arm bolts: 181 ft. lbs. (245 Nm)
     
    Front subframe brace small bolts: 43 ft. lbs. (58 Nm)
     
    Front subframe large bolts: 88 ft. lbs. (119 Nm)

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. If equipped with air suspension, move the height control switch (located in the trunk) to theOFF
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Tire and wheel assembly
     
    Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) speed sensor and wiring harness from the steering knuckle
     
    Brake caliper support bracket by removing the 2 bolts. Leave the brake line connected. Support the caliper aside by using a piece of wire.
     

  6.  
  7. Loosen the 2 lower ball joint mounting bolts.
  8.  


NOTE
Do NOT remove the bolts.

  1. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Clip and nut from the tie rod end
     
    Tie rod end from the steering arm with the proper tool
     
    Lower ball joint mounting bolts from the steering knuckle
     
    Cotter pin and nut from the lower ball joint
     
    Lower ball joint from the lower control arm

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Ball joint to the lower control arm. Tighten the nut to 112 ft. lbs. (152 Nm) and install a new cotter pin.
     
    Mounting bolts, temporarily, holding the ball joint to the steering knuckle
     
    Tie rod end to the steering knuckle. Tighten the nut to 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm) and install a new cotter pin.
     
    Lower ball joint bolts to 83 ft. lbs. (113 Nm)
     
    Brake caliper support bracket and tighten the 2 bolts to 87 ft. lbs. (118 Nm)
     
    ABS speed sensor and wiring harness to the steering knuckle
     
    Wheel
     

  2.  
  3. Lower the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Turn the height control switchON
  6.

NOTE
Removal of the lower control arm requires the removal of the engine and transaxle.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Transverse engine mounting insulator
     
    Engine and transaxle assembly
     
    2 bolts on front side of suspension arm
     
    Bolt and nut on rear side of suspension arm and lower arm
     
    Lower bush stopper
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Lower bush arm stopper
     
    2 bolt on the front side to 148 ft. lbs. (200 Nm)
     
    Rear side bolt and nut to 152 ft. lbs. (206 Nm)
     
    Transverse engine mounting insulator to 64 ft. lbs. (87 Nm)
     
    Engine and transaxle assembly

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Front wheel(s)
     
    Side fender apron seal
     
    Steering knuckle with the axle hub, from the vehicle.
     
    Dust deflector from the knuckle
     
    Cotter pin and the nut from the ball joint stud.
     

  4.  
  5. Remove the lower ball joint from the steering knuckle.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Install the lower ball joint onto the steering knuckle and tighten nut to 90 ft. lbs. (123 Nm). Install new cotter pin.
  2.  
  3. Align the hole in the dust deflector with the ABS speed sensor. Using the appropriate driver, install a new dust deflector.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Steering knuckle and hub onto the vehicle.
     
    Fender apron seal
     
    Front wheel(s)
     
    The negative battery cable

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. If equipped with air suspension, move the height control switch (located in the trunk) to the OFF position.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Tire and wheel assembly
     
    Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) speed sensor and wiring harness from the steering knuckle.
     
    Brake caliper support bracket by removing the 2 bolts. Leave the brake line connected. Support the caliper aside by using a piece of wire.
     

  6.  
  7. Loosen the 2 lower ball joint mounting bolts.
    NOTE
    Do not remove the bolts.

  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Clip and nut from the tie rod end
     
    Tie rod end from the steering arm with the proper tool.
     
    Lower ball joint mounting bolts from the steering knuckle.
     
    Cotter pin and nut from the lower ball joint.
     
    Lower ball joint from the lower control arm

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Ball joint to the lower control arm. Tighten the nut to 112 ft. lbs. (152 Nm) and install a new cotter pin.
     
    Mounting bolts, temporarily, holding the ball joint to the steering knuckle
     
    Tie rod end to the steering knuckle. Tighten the nut to 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm) and install a new cotter pin.
     
    Lower ball joint bolts to 83 ft. lbs. (113 Nm).
     
    Brake caliper support bracket and tighten the 2 bolts to 87 ft. lbs. (118 Nm).
     
    ABS speed sensor and wiring harness to the steering knuckle.
     
    Wheel

  3. Lower the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Turn the height control switch ON .
  6.
