Timing Check

  1. Warm up engine.
    NOTE
    A warmed up engine should have an engine coolant temperature of over 80°C (176°F), have an engine oil temperature of 60°C (140°F), and the engine rpm should be stabilized.

  2.  
  3. When using a hand-held tester, connect the hand-held tester to the DLC3 and refer to the hand-held tester operator-s manual for further details.
  4.  
  5. Ignition timing should measure 8-12°BTDC.
  6.  
  7. When not using hand-held tester, perform the following:


    1. Using SST 09843-18040, connect terminals 13 (TC) and 4 (CG) of DLC3.
      CAUTION
      Be sure not to connect incorrectly. It causes breakage of the engine. Turn OFF all electrical systems. Operate the inspection when the cooling fan motor is turned OFF.

    3. Remove the V-bank cover.
    4.  
    5. Pull out the wire harness as shown in the illustration. Connect the clip of the timing light to the engine.
      NOTE
      Use a timing light which can detect the first signal.

    7. Inspect ignition timing at idle, which should measure 8-12°BTDC.
      NOTE
      When checking the ignition timing, the transmission is at neutral position.


      NOTE
      After engine rpm is kept at 1,000-1,300 rpm for 5 seconds, check that it returns to idle speed.

    9. Disconnect terminals 13 (TC) and 4 (CG) of DLC3.
    10.

  9. Inspect ignition timing at idle. Ignition timing at idle is 7-24°BTDC.
  10.  
  11. Confirm that ignition timing moves to advanced angle side when the engine rpm is increased.
  12.  
  13. Remove the timing light.
  14.  

  1. Warm up engine.

  3. When using the hand-held tester or OBD II scan tool, perform the following:


    1. Connect the hand-held tester or OBD II scan tool to the DLC3
    2.  
    3. Enter DATA LIST MODE on the hand-held tester or OBD II scan tool. Refer to the hand-held tester or OBD II scan tool operator-s manual if you need help to select DATA LIST.
    4.  
    5. Ignition timing should measure 8-12°BTDC.
    6.

  5. When not using the hand-held tester or OBD II scan tool, perform the following:


    1. Using SST 09843-18040, connect terminals 13 (TC) and 4 (CG) of the DLC3.
      NOTE
      Make sure of the terminal numbers before connecting them. Connecting wrong terminals can damage the engine. Turn OFF all electrical systems before connecting the terminals. Perform this inspection after the cooling fan motor is turned OFF.

    3. Remove the V-bank cover.
    4.  
    5. Pull out the engine wire colored by black and red as shown in the illustration.
    6.  
    7. Connect the tester terminal of the timing light to the engine.
      NOTE
      Use a timing light which detects the first signal.

    8.  
    9. Inspect the ignition timing at idle. Ignition timing should measure 8-12°BTDC.
      NOTE
      When checking the ignition timing, the transmission is in the neutral position.

    10.  
    11. Run the engine at 1,000-1,300 rpm for 5 seconds, then check that the engine speed returns to the idle speed.
    12.  
    13. Disconnect terminals 13 (TC) and 4 (CG) of the DLC3.
    14.  
    15. Inspect the ignition timing at idle. Ignition timing should measure 7-24°BTDC.
    16.  
    17. Confirm that the ignition timing advances when the engine speed is increased.
    18.  
    19. Remove the timing light.
    20.

  1. Allow the engine to warm up to normal operating temperature.
    NOTE
    A warmed up engine should have an engine coolant temperature of over 80°C (176°F), have an engine oil temperature of 60°C (140°F), and the engine rpm should be stabilized.

  2.  
  3. Check the engine idle speed.

  5. Connect the timing light clip to the black lead wire. Use a timing light that can detect the primary signal.
  6.  
  7. Using SST 09843-18040, connect terminals TC and CG of the DLC3.

  9. Using a timing light, check the ignition timing. Ignition timing should measure 8-12°BTDC @ idle (Transmission in neutral position).

  11. Remove the SST from the DLC3.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the timing light from the engine.
  14.  

  1. Warm up the engine and stop the engine.
    NOTE

  3. When using the intelligent tester, perform the following:


    1. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.
    2.  
    3. Start the engine and idle it.
    4.  
    5. Push the intelligent tester main switch ON.
    6.  
    7. Enter the following items: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data list / IGN Advance.
    8.  
    9. Ignition timing should measure 5-15°BTDC at idle.
      NOTE
      Refer to the intelligent tester operator's manual for further details.

  5. When not using the intelligent tester, perform the following:


    1. Remove the V-bank cover sub-assembly.
    2.  
    3. Connect the tester probe of a timing light to the wire of the ignition connector for No. 1 cylinder. Use a timing light which can detect the primary current.

    5. Using SST 09843-18040, connect terminals TC and CG of the DLC3.
      CAUTION
      Confirm the terminal numbers before connecting them. Connecting the wrong terminals can damage the engine. When checking the ignition timing, the transmission should be in neutral.

    7. Using a timing light, check the ignition timing. Ignition timing should measure 8-12°BTDC at idle.
    8.  
    9. Remove the SST from the DLC3.
    10.  
    11. Check the ignition timing. Ignition timing should measure 5-15°BTDC at idle.
    12.  
    13. Check that the ignition timing advances immediately when the engine speed is increased.
    14.  
    15. Disconnect the timing light from the engine.
    16.  
    17. Install the V-bank cover sub-assembly.
    18.

  1. Warm up the engine and stop the engine.
    NOTE

    15. Disconnect the timing light from the engine.

    17. Install the V-bank cover sub-assembly.

  6.  

  1. Remove the battery clamp cover.
  2.  
  3. Remove the air cleaner inlet.
  4.  
  5. Remove the 2 cap nuts, bolt and V-bank cover.
  6.  
  7. Allow the engine to warm up to normal operating temperature.

  9. Connect the hand-held tester or OBD II scan tool to the DLC3.
  10.  
  11. Please refer to the hand-held tester or OBD II scan tool operator-s manual for further details.

  13. Connect the tester probe of a timing light to the yellow lead wire of the ignition coil connector for No.1 cylinder.
  14.  
  15. Race the engine speed at 2,500 rpm for approx. 90 seconds.
  16.  
  17. Check the idle speed. Idle speed should measure 700-800 rpm.

  19. Using SST 09843-18020, connect terminals TC and E1 of the DLC1.
  20.  
  21. Using a timing light, check the ignition timing. Ignition timing should measure 8-12°BTDC @ idle (Transmission in neutral position).
  22.  
  23. Remove the SST 09843-18020 from the DLC1.
  24.  
  25. Disconnect the timing light from the engine.
  26.  
  27. Disconnect the hand-held tester or OBD II scan tool.
  28.  
  29. Install the V-bank cover.
  30.  
  31. Install the air cleaner inlet.
  32.  
  33. Install the battery clamp cover.
  34.  

  1. Warm up the engine.
  2.  
  3. Check the ignition timing by performing the following:


    1. Connect the hand-held tester (with CAN VIM) to the DLC3.
    2.  
    3. Enter DATA LIST MODE on the hand-held tester. Ignition timing should measure 8-12°BTDC @ idle.
    4.  
    5. Please refer to the hand-held tester operator-s manual for help on selecting the DATA LIST.
