Removal & Installation



Es 300
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Wait 90 seconds before doing any further work while the airbag system de-energizes.
  4.  
  5. Align the front wheels facing straight ahead.
  6.  
  7. Remove the steering wheel No.2 lower cover.
  8.  
  9. Using a screwdriver, disengage the 3 claws and remove the connector cover.
  10.  
  11. Remove the horn button assembly as follows:


    1. Place the front whels facing straight ahead.
    2.  
    3. Using a torx socket wrench (T30), loosen the 2 torx screws until the groove along the screw circumference catches on the screw case.
    4.  
    5. Pull out the wheel pad from the horn button assy.
    6.  
    7. Using a screwdriver, disconnect the airbag connectors.
    8.  
    9. Remove the horn button assy.
    10.

  13. Remove the steering wheel.
  14.  
  15. Disengage the tape, 3 clips, 7 claws and remove the front door scuff plate LH.
  16.  
  17. Disengage the tape, 3 clips, 7 claws and remove the front door scuff plate RH.
  18.  
  19. Remove the instrument panel sub-assembly upper as follows:


    1. Disconnect the hood lock control cable.
    2.  
    3. Remove the bolt and screw.
    4.  
    5. Disengage the 3 clips, claw and remove the instrument panel sub-assy upper then disconnect the connectors.
    6.

  21. Remove the 4 bolts, disengage the 2 claws and remove the instrument panel sub-assy lower LH.
  22.  
  23. Remove the steering column cover lower No.2.
  24.  
  25. Remove the steering column cover.
  26.  
  27. Remove the headlamp dimmer switch assembly.
  28.  
  29. Remove the windshield wiper switch assembly.
  30.  
  31. Remove the instrument panel register assembly No. 1 as follows:


    1. Using a screwdriver, lever up the 2 claws on the instrument panel safety pad sub-assembly from inside of the registers. Tape the screwdriver tip before use.
    2.  
    3. Disengage the 2 claws and remove the instrument panel register assy No.1.
    4.

  33. Remove the instrument panel register assembly No. 3.
  34.  
  35. Remove the 2 clips, disengage the 2 clips and remove the instrument cluster finish panel sub-assembly.
  36.  
  37. Remove the 4 screws, pull out the combination meter assembly, then disconnect the connectors.
  38.  
  39. Remove the instrument panel under cover sub-assembly No. 1 as follows:


    1. Disengage the 3 claws and disconnect the connector.
    2.  
    3. Disengage the pin and remove the instrument panel under cover sub-assy No.1.
    4.

  41. Remove the instrument panel sub-assembly lower as follows:


    1. Remove the 3 screws and 2 bolts.
    2.  
    3. Disengage the clip and remove the instrument panel subassy lower.
    4.  

  42.  
  43. Disengage the 4 clips, pull out the console panel sub-assy, then disconnect the connectors.
  44.  
  45. Using a moulding remover, disengage the 6 clips and 2 claws, then remove the console panel upper rear with console panel upper front.
  46.  
  47. Remove the console box carpet.
  48.  
  49. Remove the 2 bolts, 2 screws, disengage the 2 claws and remove the console box assy rear, then disconnect the connector.
  50.  
  51. Remove the screws, disengage the clips and remove the left and right instrument panel finish panel ends.
  52.  
  53. Remove the A/C control assembly.
  54.  
  55. Remove the instrument cluster finish panel sub-assembly center (w/ Navigation System) as follows:


    1. Remove the 4 bolts.
    2.  
    3. Using a moulding remover, disengage the 4 clips.
    4.  
    5. Remove the instrument cluster finish panel sub-assy center with radio receiver assy.
    6.  
    7. Disconnect the connectors.
    8.

  57. Remove the radio receiver panel (w/o Navigation System) as follows:


    1. Remove the 4 bolts.
    2.  
    3. Using a moulding remover, disengage the 4 clips and 3 claws.
    4.  
    5. Remove the radio receiver panel with radio receiver assy.
    6.  
    7. Disconnect the connectors.
    8.

  59. Remove the left and right front pillar garnishes as follows:


    1. Remove a part of the front door opening weather strip.
    2.  
    3. Strongly press the positions where the special clips are used, and release the clips.
    4.  
    5. Disengage the 2 clips and 2 claws, pull the front pillar garnish backward of the vehicle, and remove.
    6.  
    7. Remove the clip is not reusable.
    8.

  61. Remove the instrument panel finish plate.
  62.  
  63. Disconnect the passenger airbag connector.
  64.  
  65. Using a screwdriver, remove the instrument panel safety pad cap. Tape the screwdriver tip before use.
  66.  
  67. Remove the instrument panel safety pad sub-assembly as follows:


    1. Remove the 2 bolts (A and E), 2 screws (F and G) and nut (K).
    2.  
    3. Disconnect the connectors.
    4.  
    5. Disengage the 2 pins and remove the instrument panel safety pad sub-assy.
    6.

  69. Using a moulding remover, disengage the 6 claws and remove the instrument cluster moulding No.2.
  70.  
  71. Disengage the 4 claws and remove the switch hole base No.1.
  72.  
  73. Disengage the 2 claws and remove the glove box lamp assy.
  74.  
  75. Using a screwdriver, remove the automatic light control sensor. Tape the screwdriver tip, before use. Do not pry the automatic light control sensor off from the upper position.
  76.  
  77. Remove the screw and side defroster nozzle duct No.2.
  78.  
  79. Remove the screw and side defroster nozzle duct No.1.
  80.  
  81. Remove the 5 screws and defroster nozzle assy.
  82.  
  83. Remove the 2 screws and heater to register duct No.2.
  84.  
  85. Remove the 2 screws and heater to register duct No.1.
  86.  
  87. Remove the 2 screws and heater to register duct No.3.
  88.  
  89. Remove the defroster nozzle garnish No.1.
  90.  
  91. Disengage the claw and remove the side defroster nozzle No.1.
  92.  
  93. Disengage the claw and remove the side defroster nozzle No.2.
  94.  
  95. Remove the 2 screws and 2 instrument panel pin No.1.
  96.  
  97. Remove instrument panel passenger airbag assy. as follows:


    1. Remove the 2 screws.
    2.  
    3. Release the rear side wall of the airbag door from the hook by slightly deflecting it and roll the instrument panel passenger airbag assy. forward.
    4.  
    5. Release the front side wall of the airbag door from the other hook and remove the instrument panel passenger airbag assy.

To install:

  1. Install the instrument panel passenger airbag assembly.
  2.  
  3. Install 2 instrument panel pin No.1.
  4.  
  5. Install the side defroster nozzle No.2.
  6.  
  7. Install the side defroster nozzle No.1.
  8.  
  9. Install the defroster nozzle garnish No.1.
  10.  
  11. Install the heater to register duct No.3.
  12.  
  13. Install the heater to register duct No.1.
  14.  
  15. Install the heater to register duct No.2.
  16.  
  17. Install the defroster nozzle assy.
  18.  
  19. Install the side defroster nozzle duct No.1.
  20.  
  21. Install the side defroster nozzle duct No.2.
  22.  
  23. Install the automatic light control sensor.
  24.  
  25. Install the glove box lamp assy.
  26.  
  27. Install the switch hole base No.1.
  28.  
  29. Install the instrument cluster moulding No.2.
  30.  
  31. Install the instrument panel safety pad sub-assembly. Tighten bolt (E) to 14 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  32.  
  33. Install the instrument panel safety pad cap.
  34.  
  35. Connect the passenger airbag connector.
  36.  
  37. Install the instrument panel finish plate.
  38.  
  39. Install the left and right front pillar garnishes to the body. Install the new special clip to front pillar garnish.
  40.  
  41. Install the radio receiver panel (w/o Navigation System).
  42.  
  43. Install the instrument cluster finish panel sub-assembly center (w/ Navigation System).
  44.  
  45. Install the A/C control assembly.
  46.  
  47. Install the left and right instrument panel finish panel ends.
  48.  
  49. Install the console box assy. rear. Connect the connector.
  50.  
  51. Install the console box carpet.
  52.  
  53. Install the console panel upper rear with console panel upper front.
  54.  
  55. Install the console panel sub-assy. and connect the connectors.
  56.  
  57. Install the instrument panel sub-assembly lower.
  58.  
  59. Install the instrument panel under cover sub-assembly No. 1.
  60.  
  61. Install the combination meter assembly, and connect the connectors.
  62.  
  63. Install the instrument cluster finish panel sub-assembly.
  64.  
  65. Install the instrument panel register assembly No. 3.
  66.  
  67. Install the instrument panel register assembly No. 1.
  68.  
  69. Install the windshield wiper switch assembly.
  70.  
  71. Install the headlamp dimmer switch assembly.
  72.  
  73. Install the steering column cover.
  74.  
  75. Install the steering column cover lower No.2.
  76.  
  77. Install the instrument panel sub-assy lower LH.
  78.  
  79. Install the instrument panel sub-assembly upper.
  80.  
  81. Install the front door scuff plate RH.
  82.  
  83. Install the front door scuff plate LH.
  84.  
  85. Center the spiral cable as follows:


    1. Check that the ignition switch is OFF.
    2.  
    3. Check that the battery negative terminal is disconnected. Do not start the operation for 90 seconds after removing the terminal.
    4.  
    5. Turn the cable counterclockwise by hand until it becomes harder to turn.
    6.  
    7. Then rotate the cable clockwise about 2.5 turns to align the marks. The cable will rotate about 2.5 turns to both left and right of the center.
    8.

  87. Install the steering wheel. Inspect the steering wheel centerpoint.
  88.  
  89. Inspect the horn button assembly for cuts, minute cracks or marked discoloration on the horn button assy top surface and in the grooved portion.
  90.  
  91. Install the horn button assembly as follows:


    1. Connect the airbag connectors.
    2.  
    3. Install the horn button after confirming that the circumference groove of the torx screws is caught on the screw case.
    4.  
    5. Using a torx socket wrench (T 30), install the 2 screws and tighten to 78 inch lbs. (8.8 Nm).
    6.

  93. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position and check that the SRS warning light lights up. Check that the SRS warning light goes out after approx. 6 seconds.
  94.  
  95. Install the connector cover.
  96.  
  97. Install the steering wheel No.2 lower cover.
  98.  
  99. Connect the negative battery cable.
  100.  

Es 330
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Set CD changer to ship mode setting using following procedure
    NOTE
    When mode setting is complete -Ship- appears on the display



    Remove all CDs
     
    Simultaneously press -Seek Up- and -Disc- while turning the ignition switch to -Acc-
     

  4.  
  5. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Wait 90 seconds before doing any further work while the airbag system de-energizes.
  6.  
  7. Disassemble the dash components as follows

Is 250 And Is 350
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Wait 90 seconds before doing any further work while the airbag system de-energizes.
  4.  
  5. Align the front wheels facing straight ahead.
  6.  
  7. Remove the shift lever knob by turning counterclockwise
  8.  
  9. Remove upper No. 1 and No. 2 console panel garnishes and console panel sub-assembly (automatic transmission) as follows:
    1. Using a moulding remover, disengage the claw.
    2.  
    3. Pull each upper console panel garnish toward the rear of the vehicle to disengage the 2 clips and remove it.
    4.  
    5. Disengage the 8 clips.
    6.  
    7. Disconnect the connectors and remove the console panel sub-assembly.
    8.  

  10.  
  11. Remove the front and rear console panel sub-assemblies (manual transmission) as follows:
    1. Open the snap of the boot for the emergency brake lever.
    2.  
    3. Disengage the 7 claws and 2 clips, and then remove the rear console panel sub-assembly.
    4.  
    5. Open the snap of the boot for the shifter.
    6.  
    7. Pull the front console panel sub-assembly toward the rear of the vehicle to disengage the 6 clips and remove it.
    8.  

  12.  
  13. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front and rear ash receptacle assemblies
     
    Console box register assembly
     
    6 bolts, 2 clamps, 2 claws, 2 clips, connector and console box
     

  14.  
  15. Remove the No. 3 instrument panel register assembly as follows:
    1. Using a screwdriver, disengage the 4 claws. Tape the screwdriver tip before use.
    2.  
    3. Apply protective tape to the areas surrounding the removal.
    4.  
    5. Using a moulding remover, disengage the 4 claws starting from the right of the No. 3 instrument panel register assembly. Disengage the remaining 3 claws by pulling the No. 3 instrument panel register assembly by hand.
      WARNING
      Do not pry the lower part of the No. 3 instrument panel register assembly. Doing so may damage the assembly.

    6.  
    7. Disconnect the connectors.

      Center lower instrument cluster finish panel by disengaging 4 claws
       

    8.

  17. Remove the integration control panel with radio receiver assembly (w/o navigation system) as follows:
    1. Remove the 4 bolts.
    2.  
    3. Pull the integration control panel w/ radio receiver assembly toward the rear of the vehicle.
    4.  
    5. Disconnect each connector and remove the panel.
    6.  

  18.  
  19. Remove the multi-display with radio receiver assembly (w/ navigation system) as follows:
    1. Remove the 4 bolts.
    2.  
    3. Pull the multi-display w/ radio receiver assembly toward the rear of the vehicle.
    4.  
    5. Disconnect each connector and remove the multi-display.

      The lower No. 2 and No. 3 steering wheel covers using a screwdriver. Tape up the screwdriver tip before use.
       

    6.  

  20.  
  21. Remove the steering wheel airbag as follows:
    1. Using a "torx" socket wrench (T30), loosen the 2 "torx" screws until the groove along the screw circumference catches on the screw case.
    2.  
    3. Pull out the steering airbag from the steering wheel assembly and support the airbag with one hand.
      WARNING
      When removing the steering airbag, do not pull the airbag wire harness.

    4.  
    5. Disconnect the horn connector.
    6.  
    7. Disconnect the 2 connectors from the steering airbag.
      WARNING
      When handling the airbag connector, take care not to damage the airbag wire harness.

    8.  
    9. Remove the steering wheel airbag.
    10.

  23. Remove the steering wheel assembly as follows:
    1. Remove the steering wheel assembly set nut.
    2.  
    3. Put matchmarks on the steering wheel assembly and main shaft assembly.
    4.  
    5. Using a steering wheel puller tool, remove the steering wheel assembly.
    6.  

  24.  
  25. Remove the steering column cover as follows:
    1. Remove the retaining screws.
    2.  
    3. Disengage the 2 claws to remove the lower steering column cover.
      WARNING
      If equipped with the power tilt column, be careful not to damage the tilt and telescopic switch.

    4.  
    5. Disengage the 4 clips to separate the steering column cover upper.
    6.  
    7. Disengage the claw to remove the upper steering column cover.
    8.  

  26.  
  27. Remove or disconnect the following:

    The tilt and telescopic switch (power tilt steering column)
     
    Turn signal switch assembly with spiral cable sub-assembly
     
    Left and right front door scuff plates
     
    Left and right front door opening trim covers
     
    Left and right side instrument panel
     
    No. 1 and 2 instrument panel under covers
     
    Lower instrument panel finish panel
     
    Driver side and passenger side knee airbag assemblies
     
    Instrument cluster finish panel
     
    Combination meter assembly
     
    Glove compartment door assembly
     
    Left and right front pillar garnishes
     
    No. 1 and 2 instrument panel register assemblies
     
    Instrument panel speaker panel
     
    Front stereo component speaker assembly (w/ front center speaker)
     
    No. 1 console box duct (automatic transmission)
     
    No. 2 console box duct
     
    Passenger airbag connector
     
    Instrument panel safety pad
     
    No. 1 air duct
     

  28.  
  29. Remove the steering sliding yoke sub-assembly (2WD) as follows:
    1. Loosen upper bolt and remove lower bolt, then slide the steering sliding yoke sub-assembly.
      NOTE
      Do not remove the upper bolt. Do not separate the steering sliding yoke sub-assembly from the power steering gear assembly.

    2.  
    3. Put matchmarks on the steering sliding yoke subassembly and the power steering gear assembly.
    4.  
    5. Separate the steering sliding yoke sub-assembly from the power steering gear assembly.
    6.  
    7. Put matchmarks on the steering sliding yoke sub-assembly and the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly.
    8.  
    9. Remove the bolt and the steering sliding yoke subassembly from the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly.
    10.  

  30.  
  31. Separate the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly (AWD) as follows:
    1. Remove the bolt, and then slide the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly.
      NOTE
      Do not separate the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly from the power steering gear assembly.

    2.  
    3. Put matchmarks on the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly and the power steering gear assembly.
    4.  
    5. Separate the No. 2 intermediate shaft assembly from the power steering gear assembly.
    6.  

  32.  
  33. Remove the steering column assembly as follows:
    1. Remove the brake pedal return spring (manual tilt).
    2.  
    3. Remove the clamp from the steering column hole shield.
    4.  
    5. Disconnect the connectors and wire harness clamps from the steering column assembly.
    6.  
    7. Remove the 4 nuts and steering column assembly.

      4 claws and defroster nozzle lower assembly
       
      Immobiliser code ECU
       

    8.

  35. Remove the instrument panel reinforcement assembly as follows:
    1. Remove the 27 clamps and 19 connectors, and then disconnect the wire harness.
    2.  
    3. Remove the 2 nuts, 2 bolts and 2 junction blocks.
    4.  
    5. Remove the cap and bolt.
    6.  
    7. Remove the 3 bolts and nut.
    8.  
    9. Using a T40 "torx" socket, remove the 5 "torx" bolts.
    10.  
    11. Using a 12 mm hexagon wrench, remove the 2 collars and instrument panel reinforcement.

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Instrument panel reinforcement assembly. Torque the 3 driver side -torx- bolts and 2 passenger side 12mm collars to 53 inch lbs. (6 Nm). Torque the 2 remaining -torx- bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm) and the 4 remaining bolts and 1 nut to 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm).
     
    Immobiliser code ECU
     
    Defroster nozzle lower assembly
     
    Steering column assembly. Torque the 4 retaining nuts to 16 ft. lbs. (21 Nm).
     
    No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly (AWD). Torque the bolt to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
     
    Steering sliding yoke sub-assembly (2WD). Torque the bolts to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
     
    No. 1 air duct
     
    Instrument panel safety pad
     
    Passenger airbag connector
     
    No. 2 console box duct
     
    No. 1 console box duct (automatic transmission)
     
    Front stereo component speaker assembly (w/ front center speaker)
     
    Instrument panel speaker panel
     
    No. 1 and 2 instrument panel register assemblies
     
    Left and right front pillar garnishes
     
    Glove compartment door assembly

  3. Adjust the spiral cable as follows:


    1. Check that the engine switch is off.
    2.  
    3. Check that the battery negative (-) terminal is disconnected.
      WARNING
      After removing the terminal, wait for at least 90 seconds before starting the operation.

    4.  
    5. Rotate the spiral cable with steering sensor counterclockwise slowly by hand until it feels firm. Do not turn it by the wiring harness.
    6.  
    7. Rotate the spiral cable with steering sensor clockwise approximately 2.5 turns to align the marks.

      The tilt and telescopic switch (power tilt steering column)
       
      Steering column cover
       
      Steering wheel. Torque the steering wheel bolt to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).

  3. Ship mode setting (w/ CD changer) as follows:


    1. Take out all CDs. If the CDs cannot be taken out, do not attempt to take out forcibly. Send the unit for repair.

    3. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
    4.  
    5. While holding the -UP- and -DISC- switches, turn the ignition switch to the ACC position.
    6.  
    7. The CD indicator light blinks during the mode setting and remains lit after the setting is completed.

    9. Without Multi-display: When the mode setting is completed, -SHIP- appears on the display.

    11. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position and disconnect the battery negative terminal. Connecting the battery negative terminal automatically ends the ship mode.

  25. Using a screwdriver, disengage the 2 claws and the clip and remove the instrument cluster finish panel center end. Tape up the screwdriver tip before use. Disconnect the connector.

    3. Disengage the 2 clips and remove the instrument panel under cover sub-assy No.1.

    5. Disconnect the connector.

    1. Remove the 4 bolts. Be careful not to drop the bolts when removing them from the display.

    3. Using a moulding remover, disengage the 4 clips and remove the instrument cluster finish panel sub-assy center. Remove the multi-display together with instrument cluster finish panel sub-assy center.
    4.  
    5. Disconnect the connectors.

    1. Remove the 2 bolts. Be careful not to drop the bolts when removing them from the display.

  115. Using a moulding remover, disengage the 2 clips and remove the defroster nozzle garnish No.1. Use a screwdriver if a moulding remover is not available. Tape up the screwdriver tip before use.

  117. Using a moulding remover, disengage the 2 clips and remove the No. 1 and No. 2 instrument panel speaker panel sub-assemblies.

  119. Disconnect the passenger airbag assembly connector.

  121. Remove the instrument panel safety pad sub-assembly.

To install:

  1. Install the instrument panel safety pad sub-assembly.
  2.  
  3. Connect the passenger airbag assembly connector.
  4.  
  5. Install the No. 1 and No. 2 instrument panel speaker panel sub-assemblies.
  6.  
  7. Install the defroster nozzle garnish No.1.
  8.  
  9. Install the front No. 2 speaker assembly.
  10.  
  11. If equipped with the LEXUS Navigation System, install the navigation antenna assembly.
  12.  
  13. Install the meter hood retainer No.1.
  14.  
  15. Install the instrument panel mounting bracket No.1.
  16.  
  17. Install the side defroster nozzle duct No.2.
  18.  
  19. Install the heater to register duct No.3.
  20.  
  21. Install the heater to register duct No.4.
  22.  
  23. Install the heater to register duct No.2.
  24.  
  25. Install the network gateway ECU.
  26.  
  27. Install the heater to register duct assy.
  28.  
  29. Install the instrument panel reinforcement assembly.
  30.  
  31. Install the defroster nozzle assy.
  32.  
  33. Install the instrument panel wire.
  34.  
  35. Install the instrument panel safety pad sub-assembly with reinforcement as follows:


    1. Install the instrument panel safety pad sub-assy w/ reinforcement assy with the 9 bolts (A), (C), (D). Tighten the bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Install the instrument panel safety pad sub-assy w/ reinforcement assy with the 3 bolts (E), (K) and the 4 nuts (U). Tighten the bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).

    5. Install the 2 earth bolts.
    6.  
    7. Connect the connectors.
    8.  
    9. Engage the clamps.

    1. Connect the connectors.

    3. Engage the clip and install the glove compartment door assy w/ instrument panel airbag assy lower No.2 with the 3 bolts (J) and the 3 screws (N). Tighten the screws and bolts to 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm).
