Pinion Seal

Removal & Installation



2002-05 Models
C-Clip Type Axle
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, please familiarize yourself with safety procedures.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheels
     
    Brake drums
     
    Driveshaft
     

  4.  
  5. Check the bearing preload with an inch lb. torque wrench.
  6.  
  7. Remove the pinion flange and seal.
  8.  

To install:


NOTE
Use a new pinion nut for assembly.

  1. Install the new pinion seal and flange. Tighten the nut to 200 ft. lbs. (271 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Check the bearing preload. The bearing preload should be equal to the reading taken earlier, plus 5 inch lbs.
  4.  
  5. If the preload torque is low, tighten the pinion nut in 5 inch lb. increments until the torque value is reached. Do not exceed 350 ft. lbs. (474 Nm) pinion nut torque.
  6.  
  7. If the pinion bearing preload torque cannot be attained at maximum pinion nut torque, replace the collapsible spacer.
  8.  
  9. Install or connect the following:

    Driveshaft
     
    Brake drums
     
    Wheels
     

  10.  
  11. Fill the axle assembly with gear oil and check for leaks.

Non C-Clip Type-2002-04 Models
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, please familiarize yourself with safety procedures.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheels
     
    Brake rotors or drums
     
    Driveshaft
     

  4.  
  5. Check the bearing preload with an inch lb. torque wrench.
  6.  
  7. Remove the pinion flange and seal.
  8.  

To install:


NOTE
Use a new pinion nut for assembly.

  1. Install the new pinion seal and flange. Tighten the nut to 160 ft. lbs. (217 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Check the bearing preload. The bearing preload should be equal to the reading taken earlier, plus 5 inch lbs.
  4.  
  5. If the preload torque is low, tighten the pinion nut in 5 inch lb. increments until the torque value is reached. Do not exceed 260 ft. lbs. (353 Nm) pinion nut torque.
  6.  
  7. If the pinion bearing preload torque can not be attained at maximum pinion nut torque, remove one or more pinion preload shims.
  8.  
  9. Install or connect the following:

    Driveshaft
     
    Brake rotors or drums
     
    Wheels
     

  10.  
  11. Fill the axle assembly with gear oil and check for leaks.
  12.  

Is 250 And Is 350
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the differential and place the differential carrier in an overhaul stand.
  4.  
  5. Using SST 09930-00010 and a hammer, unstake the staked part of the drive pinion nut. Be sure to use the SST with the tapered surface facing the shaft. Completely loosen the staked part of the nut when removing it.
  6.  
  7. Using SST 09330-00021, 09950-30012 (09955-03030) to hold the flange, remove the drive pinion nut.
  8.  
  9. Using SST 09950-30012 (09951-03010, 09953-03010, 09954-03010, 09955-03030, 09956-03020), remove the companion flange. Apply grease to the threads and the tip of the SST center bolt before use.
  10.  
  11. Using SST 09950-00020, 09950-60010 (09951-00430), 09950-70010 (09951-07100) and a press, remove the dust deflector. Perform this procedure only when the dust deflector is damaged.
  12.  
  13. Using SST 09308-00010, remove the oil seal from the differential carrier.
  14.  

To install:

  1. Install the new pinion seal as follows:


    1. Join the 2 SST 09309-36010, 09502-12010 and secure them with vinyl tape.
    2.  
    3. Using SST 09309-36010, 09502-12010 and a hammer, install a new oil seal. Oil seal installation depth: 0.028-0.051 inch (0.7-1.3mm)
    4.  
    5. Apply MP grease to the oil seal lip.
    6.  

  2.  
  3. Install the differential side bearing retainer dust deflector with the bolt and tighten to 62 inch lbs. (7 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the front drive pinion companion flange as follows:


    1. Using SST 09950-30012 (09951-03010, 09953-03010, 09954-03010, 09955-03030, 09956-03020), install the companion flange to the drive pinion.
      NOTE
      Apply grease to the threads and tip of the SST center bolt before use.

    2.  
    3. Coat the threads of a new drive pinion nut with hypoid gear oil LSD.
    4.  
    5. Using SST 09330-00021, 09950-30012 (09955-03030), to hold the flange, tighten the drive pinion nut to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).
    6.  

  6.  
  7. Adjust the differential drive pinion preload as follows:


    1. Using a torque wrench, measure the preload of the drive pinion. Preload (at starting):

      New bearing: 9.9-15 inch lbs. (1.12-1.70 Nm)
       
      Reused bearing: 3.5-6.2 inch lbs. (0.40-0.70 Nm)
       

    2.  
    3. If the preload is less than the specified minimum value, check the preload while retightening the drive pinion nut by 5-10° to adjust it into the specified range.
    4.  
    5. If the preload is less than the specified minimum value even when the tightening torque of the drive pinion nut is greater than the specified maximum value, loosen the nut and check that the threads of the drive pinion nut and drive pinion are not stripped.
    6.  
    7. If the threads are not stripped, replace the bearing spacer. Apply hypoid gear oil LSD to the threads of the drive pinion and repeat the procedure.
    8.

  9. Install the differential case to the differential carrier. Do not damage the case bearing and ring gear.
  10.  
  11. Install the drive pinion companion flange front nut. Using a chisel and hammer, stake the drive pinion nut.
  12.  

Is 300
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    The rear brake calipers must be removed so that there is no additional drag when measuring pinion bearing preload.



    Driveshaft
     
    Rear wheels
     
    Rear brake calipers
     
    Pinion flange
     
    Pinion seal
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Pinion seal and flange
     
    New pinion flange nut
     

  2.  
  3. Rotate the pinion flange occasionally while tightening the flange nut to make sure the pinion bearings seat correctly. Do NOT exceed 249 ft. lbs. (338 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Take frequent bearing preload torque readings.
  6.  
  7. The pinion bearing preload specifications are as follows:
    1. Used bearings: 4.3-6.9 inch lbs. (0.49-0.78 Nm).
    2.  
    3. New bearings: 8.7-13.9 inch lbs. (0.98-1.57 Nm).
      CAUTION
      Never loosen the pinion nut to reduce bearing preload. If it is necessary to reduce bearing preload, install a new collapsible spacer and pinion nut.

  9. Install or connect the following:

    Driveshaft
     
    Brake calipers
     
    Rear wheels
     

  10.  
  11. Fill the differential with gear lubricant and check for leaks.
  12.  

LS 400 And LS 430
  1. Remove or disconnect:

    Gear oil
     
    Driveshaft
     
    Companion flange
     
    Oil seal and slinger
     

  2.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect:
    NOTE
    Oil seal drive-in depth: 0.079 inch (2.0mm).



    Oil slinger
     
    New oil seal
     



    Multi-Purpose (MP) grease to the oil seal lip
     
    Companion flange on the shaft
     
    Gear oil on the threads of a new nut. Torque to 80 ft. lbs. (108 Nm).

  3. Adjust the drive pinion preload as necessary, stake drive the pinion nut, and install the driveshaft.
  4.  
  5. Fill the differential with hypoid gear oil
  6.
