1mz-FE Engine



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Wait at least 90 seconds before performing any other work.
  4.  
  5. Drain the engine coolant.
  6.  
  7. Remove the battery.
  8.  
  9. Remove the air cleaner inlet assembly.
  10.  
  11. Remove the air cleaner assembly with hose.
  12.  
  13. Remove the air cleaner bracket.
  14.  
  15. Remove the air cleaner inlet No. 1.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the radiator hose outlet.
  18.  
  19. Remove the bolt and water inlet pipe.
  20.  
  21. Remove the O-ring from the water inlet pipe.
  22.  
  23. Remove the 3 bolts and water inlet.
  24.  
  25. Remove the thermostat.
  26.  

To install:

  1. Install a new gasket to the thermostat.

  3. Align the thermostat jiggle valve with the upper stud bolt, and insert the thermostat in the water inlet housing. The jiggle valve may be set within 15° of either side of the prescribed position.
  4.  
  5. Install the water inlet and tighten the 3 bolts to 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install a new O-ring to the water inlet pipe. Apply soapy water to the O-ring.
  8.  
  9. Connect the water inlet pipe to the water inlet.
  10.  
  11. Install the bolt holding the water inlet pipe to the cylinder head and tighten to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Connect the radiator hose outlet.
  14.  
  15. Install the air cleaner inlet No. 1.
  16.  
  17. Install the air cleaner bracket.
  18.  
  19. Install the air cleaner assembly with hose.
  20.  
  21. Connect vacuum hose.
  22.  
  23. Install the air cleaner inlet assembly.
  24.  
  25. Install the battery.
  26.  
  27. Refill the engine coolant.
  28.  
  29. Connect the negative battery cable.
  30.  
  31. Start the engine and check cooling system for leaks.
  32.  

1uz-FE Engine



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Wait at least 90 seconds before performing any other work.
  4.  
  5. Drain the engine coolant.
  6.  
  7. Remove the battery clamp cover and air cleaner inlet.
  8.  
  9. Remove the 3 nuts holding the water inlet to the inlet housing, and disconnect the water inlet together with the radiator hose from the water inlet housing.
  10.  
  11. Remove the thermostat.
  12.  
  13. Remove the gasket from the thermostat.
  14.  

To install:

  1. Install a new gasket to the thermostat.
  2.  
  3. Insert the thermostat into the water inlet housing with the jiggle valve facing straight upward. The jiggle valve may be set within 30° of either side of the prescribed position.
  4.  
  5. Install the water inlet with thermostat with the 3 nuts. Tighten the 3 nuts to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Refill the engine coolant.
  8.  
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10.  
  11. Start the engine and check cooling system for leaks.
  12.  
  13. Check the coolant level and add if necessary.
  14.  
  15. Install the battery clamp cover and air cleaner inlet.
  16.  

2gr-Fse & 4gr-Fse Engines



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Wait at least 90 seconds before performing any other work.
  4.  
  5. Remove the cool air intake duct seal.
  6.  
  7. Remove the No. 1 inlet air cleaner.
  8.  
  9. Remove the V-bank cover sub-assembly.
  10.  
  11. Drain the engine coolant.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the hose from the water inlet with thermostat.
  14.  
  15. Remove the 3 nuts, water inlet with thermostat and gasket.

To install:

  1. Install a new gasket and the water inlet with thermostat with the 3 nuts. Tighten the 3 nuts to 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Connect the radiator outlet hose to the radiator assembly and secure it with the clip. Make sure that the claws on the clip are positioned outward with space between the hose end and the clip end should be less than 1-5mm. Hose contact with the stopper should be less than 2.5mm.
  4.  
  5. Refill the engine coolant.
  6.  
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8.  
  9. Start the engine and check cooling system for leaks.
  10.  
  11. Install the No. 1 inlet air cleaner.
  12.  
  13. Install the cool air intake duct seal.
  14.  
  15. Install the V-bank cover sub-assembly.
  16.  

2jz-Ge Engine



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Wait at least 90 seconds before performing any other work.
  4.  
  5. Drain the engine coolant.
  6.  
  7. Remove the 2 nuts holding the water inlet to the water pump, and disconnect the water inlet from the water pump.
  8.  
  9. Remove the thermostat.
  10.  
  11. Remove the gasket from the thermostat.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Install a new gasket to the thermostat.
  2.  
  3. Align the jiggle valve of the thermostat with the protrusion of the water inlet.
  4.  
  5. Install the water inlet with the 2 nuts and tighten to 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Refill the engine coolant.
  8.  
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10.  
  11. Start the engine and check cooling system for leaks.
  12.  

3.7L & 4.7L Engines




WARNING
Do not loosen radiator drain cock with system hot and pressurized. Serious burns from coolant can occur.


NOTE
Do not waste reusable coolant. If solution is clean, drain coolant into a clean container for reuse. If thermostat is being replaced, be sure that replacement is specified thermostat for vehicle model and engine type.

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable at battery.
  2.  
  3. Drain cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Raise vehicle on hoist.
  6.  
  7. Remove splash shield.
  8.  
  9. Remove lower radiator hose clamp and lower radiator hose at thermostat housing.
  10.  
  11. Remove thermostat housing mounting bolts, thermostat housing and thermostat.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Clean mating areas of timing chain cover and thermostat housing.
  2.  
  3. Install thermostat (spring side down) into recessed machined groove on timing chain cover.
  4.  
  5. Position thermostat housing on timing chain cover.
  6.  
  7. Install two housing-to-timing chain cover bolts. Tighten bolts to 115 inch lbs. (13 Nm).
    CAUTION
    Housing must be tightened evenly and thermostat must be centered into recessed groove in timing chain cover. If not, it may result in a cracked housing, damaged timing chain cover threads or coolant leaks.

  8.  
  9. Install lower radiator hose on thermostat housing.
  10.  
  11. Install splash shield.
  12.  
  13. Lower vehicle.
  14.  
  15. Fill cooling system.
  16.  
  17. Connect negative battery cable to battery.
  18.  
  19. Start and warm the engine. Check for leaks.
  20.  

3mz-FE Engine



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Wait at least 90 seconds before performing any other work.
  4.  
  5. Drain the engine coolant.
  6.  
  7. Remove the radiator lower air deflector.
  8.  
  9. Remove the air cleaner inlet assembly.
  10.  
  11. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
  12.  
  13. Remove the bolt and water inlet pipe.
  14.  
  15. Remove the O-ring from the water inlet pipe.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the wire harness clamp.
  18.  
  19. Remove the 3 nuts and water inlet.
  20.  
  21. Remove the thermostat.
  22.  

To install:

  1. Install a new gasket to the thermostat.
  2.  
  3. Align the thermostat jiggle valve with the upper stud bolt, and insert the thermostat in the water inlet housing. The jiggle valve may be set within 15° of either side of the prescribed position.
  4.  
  5. Install the water inlet and tighten the 3 bolts to 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install a new O-ring to the water inlet pipe. Apply soapy water to the O-ring.

  9. Connect the water inlet pipe to the water inlet.
  10.  
  11. Install the bolt holding the water inlet pipe to the cylinder head and tighten to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).

  13. Install the air cleaner assembly.
  14.  
  15. Install the air cleaner inlet assembly.
  16.  
  17. Install the radiator lower air deflector.
  18.  
  19. Check the connection of the vacuum hose.
  20.  
  21. Refill the engine coolant.
  22.  
  23. Connect the negative battery cable.
  24.  
  25. Start the engine and check cooling system for leaks.
  26.  

3uz-FE Engine



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Wait at least 90 seconds before performing any other work.
  4.  
  5. Remove the air cleaner inlet No. 1.
  6.  
  7. Drain the engine coolant.
  8.  
  9. Remove the 3 nuts and disconnect the water inlet from the water inlet housing.
  10.  
  11. Remove the thermostat.
  12.  
  13. Remove the gasket from the thermostat.
  14.  

To install:

  1. Install a new gasket to the thermostat.
  2.  
  3. Insert the thermostat into the water inlet housing with the jiggle valve facing straight upward. The jiggle valve may be set within 30° of either side of the prescribed position.
  4.  
  5. Install the water inlet with the 3 nuts and tighten to 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Refill the engine coolant.
  8.  
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10.  
  11. Start the engine and check cooling system for leaks.
  12.  
  13. Install the air cleaner inlet No. 1.
  14.  
  15. Check the coolant level and add if necessary.
  16.
