Transmission Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position and disconnect the negative battery cable. Wait at least 90 seconds or longer before doing any work on the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Transmission level gauge
     
    Transmission dipstick and tube
     
    Throttle cable from the throttle body
     
    Oxygen (O 2 ) sensor from the exhaust system.
     
    Left and right tail pipes
     
    Front and center exhaust pipe
     
    Exhaust heat insulator
     
    Rear center floor crossmember brace
     
    Shift control rod from the shift lever
     
    Driveshaft
     
    Overdrive and direct clutch speed sensor
     
    No. 1 Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS)
     
    No. 2 VSS
     
    Solenoid wire
     
    Park/Neutral Position (PNP) switch
     
    Wiring from the starter
     
    2 oil cooler union nuts
     
    Oil cooler hoses from the oil cooler pipes
     
    Front oil cooler pipe bracket
     
    Center and rear oil cooler pipe brackets
     
    2 oil cooler pipes
     
    Torque converter inspection plate
     
    Torque converter bolts
     

  6.  
  7. Support the transmission with a suitable jack.
  8.  
  9. Support the engine with a jack and a block of wood.
  10.  
  11. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Rear transmission mount
     
    Wiring harness clamps
     
    Starter
     
    9 transmission mounting bolts and transmission
     

  12.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Transmission and tighten the bolts to 53 ft. lbs. (52 Nm)
     
    Starter and tighten the bolts to 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm).
     
    Rear transmission mount and tighten the bolts to 19 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
     
    And tighten the torque converter bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm) while rotating the crankshaft.
     
    Converter inspection plate
     
    2 oil cooler pipes
     
    Center and rear oil cooler pipe brackets
     
    Front oil cooler pipe bracket and tighten to 49 inch lbs. (5.5 Nm).
     
    Oil cooler hoses to the oil cooler pipes
     
    2 oil cooler union nuts and tighten to 32 ft. lbs. (44 Nm).
     
    Wiring to the starter
     
    Transmission electrical connectors
     
    Driveshaft
     
    Remaining components
     
    Negative battery cable
     
    Transmission level gauge
     

  2.  
  3. Fill the transmission to the proper level with Dexron®II or equivalent.
  4.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    The bolts inserted from the driveshaft side should not be removed.



    Negative battery cable.
     
    V-bank cover, if equipped
     
    Automatic transmission oil level gauge if equipped.
     
    Transmission dipstick and tube
     
    Throttle cable and clamps
     
    Exhaust pipe and converters
     
    Exhaust heat insulator
     
    Rear center floor crossmember brace
     
    Shift control rod
     
    Driveshaft

    The electrical harness from the transmission.
     
    Oil cooler tube clamp and disconnect the tubes.

  5. Support the transmission with a suitable jack.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Starter, if necessary
     
    Rear transmission mount
     
    Transmission mounting bolts and the transmission.
     

  8.  

To install:

  1. Before installing the transmission, use calipers and a straightedge to check the distance between the installed surface of the torque converter and the front edge of the transmission case. Correct distance is 0.673 in. (17.1mm). If this distance is not correct, check the torque converter installation.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Transmission and tighten the bolts to 14mm: 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm); 17mm: 42 ft. lbs. (57 Nm)
     
    If removed, the starter. Tighten the bolts to 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm).
     
    Rear transmission mount and tighten the bolts to 19 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
     
    And tighten the torque converter bolts to 25 ft. lbs. (33 Nm) while rotating the crankshaft.
     
    Converter inspection plate
     
    Lower engine cover
     
    Oil cooler lines and tighten the lines to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm)
     
    Oil cooler pipe bracket and tighten the bolt
     
    Transmission electrical connectors
     
    Shift control rod and adjust the shift linkage. Tighten the nut to 12 ft. lbs. (16 Nm).
     
    Rear center floor crossmember brace. Tighten the bolts to 108 inch lbs. (13 Nm).
     
    Heat insulator
     
    Transmission filler tube and dipstick
     
    Front exhaust pipe and converters with new gaskets
     
    Throttle control cable
     
    Driveshaft. Flange bolts: 58 ft. lbs. (79 Nm). Center bearing support bolts: 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm). Adjusting nut: 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm).
     
    Crossmember brace and tighten to 96 inch lbs. (13 Nm).
     
    Automatic transmission oil level gauge
     
    V-bank cover
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  4.  
  5. Adjust the PNP switch
  6.  
  7. Fill the transmission with Dexron®II.
  8.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position and disconnect the negative battery cable. Wait at least 90 seconds or longer before doing any work on the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. From the engine compartment, remove or disconnect the following:

    Transmission level gauge
     
    Transmission dipstick and tube
     
    Air cleaner, MAF meter, and intake air connector pipe assembly
     
    Intake manifold with catalytic converters
     

  6.  
  7. Raise vehicle and remove or disconnect the following:

    Engine under cover
     
    Front and center exhaust pipe
     
    If necessary, oxygen sensor from the exhaust system.
     
    2 exhaust heat insulators
     
    Driveshaft
     
    Shift control rod from end of shift lever
     
    Oil cooler pipes
     
    Torque converter inspection plate
     
    Torque converter bolts (through plate access hole)
     

  8.  
  9. Support the transmission with a suitable jack.
  10.  
  11. Support the front of the engine with a jack and a block of wood.
  12.  
  13. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Rear transmission mount (tilt end of transmission downward)
     
    Wiring harness connectors and wiring harness
     
    Starter
     
    9 transmission mounting bolts and transmission (note position of longer bolts for reinstallation)

  14.  

To install:

  1. Inspect torque converter position in the transmission housing, using a straightedge placed across the transmission case. If torque converter-to-transmission clearance is less than 0.004 in. (0.1mm), check for proper installation of the torque converter.
  2.  
  3. Position the transmission into the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:
    CAUTION
    Twist oxygen sensor wiring 3-1/2 turns counterclockwise before installing oxygen sensor; this will prevent wires from being twisted after installation.



    Transmission and tighten the 17 mm head bolts to 53 ft. lbs. (72 Nm) and 14mm head bolts to 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm)
     
    Starter and tighten the bolts to 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm)
     
    Wiring harness and connectors
     
    Rear transmission mount and tighten the bolts to 20 ft. lbs. (26 Nm)
     
    And tighten the torque converter bolts to 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm) while rotating the crankshaft
     
    Converter inspection plate
     
    2 oil cooler pipes
     
    Center and rear oil cooler pipe brackets
     
    Shift control rod to shift lever; torque nut to 9 ft. lbs. (13 Nm)
     
    Driveshaft
     
    2 heat insulators
     
    Front and center exhaust pipes, with new gaskets; torque pipe support bracket bolts to 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm), exhaust pipe connector nuts to 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm), and center bracket bolts to 65 inch lbs. (7.4 Nm).
     



    If removed, install oxygen sensor to 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm).
     
    Engine under cover
     
    Exhaust manifold, with new gaskets; torque nuts to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm)
     
    Intake air connector pipe, MAF meter, and air cleaner
     
    Filler pipe with new O-ring
     
    Transmission level gauge
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  6.  
  7. Fill the transmission to the proper level with Type T-IV fluid.
  8.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.

  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Wait at least 90 seconds before performing any other work.

  5. Drain the engine coolant.
  6.  
  7. Drain transmission fluid.
  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Cool air intake duct seal
     
    Left engine room side cover
     
    Engine under cover
     
    No. 2 engine under cover
     
    No. 1 rear floor panel brace
     
    Front center floor brace
     
    Oxygen sensor
     
    Front exhaust pipe assembly
     
    Right outside air guide plate
     
    Front floor No. 1 heat insulator
     
    Propeller shaft with center bearing assembly after matchmarking location
     
    Left exhaust manifold
     
    Starter motor
     
    Flywheel housing side cover
     
    6 torque converter clutch setting bolts while holding crankshaft pulley nut with wrench
     
    Floor shift gear shifting rod
     

  10.  
  11. Support the transmission unit with a transmission jack.

    Engine rear mounting member
     
    Ground wire
     
    Remaining wiring connectors
     
    Water by-pass hose from transmission oil cooler
     
    9 bolts and automatic transmission assembly
     

  12.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:
    NOTE
    Make sure that the mark is as shown in the illustration.


    NOTE
    Stabilize the propeller shaft by rotating it several times by hand to stabilize the center support bearing.



    Transmission. Torque bolts A and B to 52 ft. lbs. (71 Nm) and bolt C to 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm)

    Water by-pass hose to transmission oil cooler. Torque the hose clamp bolt to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm)
     
    All wiring connectors
     
    Ground wire
     
    Engine rear mounting member. Torque the 4 nuts to the transmission to 10 ft. lbs. (13 Nm) and the 4 body bolts to 19 ft. lbs. (26 Nm)
     
    Floor shift gear shifting rod
     
    6 torque converter clutch setting bolts. Install the black colored bolt first. Torque to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm)
     
    Flywheel housing side cover
     
    Starter motor
     
    Left exhaust manifold
     
    Propeller shaft with center bearing assembly. Torque to 58 ft. lbs. (79 Nm)
     
    No. 1 center support bearing to the matchmark. Torque to 51 ft. lbs. (69 Nm)

    Front exhaust pipe assembly
     
    Oxygen sensor

  2.  
  3. Add transmission fluid and engine coolant.
  4.  
  5. Start engine and check for fluid and exhaust leaks.
  6.  
  7. Check shift lever position as follows:

    Remove the nut and disconnect the shifting rod.
     
    Turn the control shaft lever of the neutral start switch counterclockwise until it stops, and turn it clockwise 2 notches to set it to the N position.
     
    Move the shift lever to the N position and tighten the nut while lightly pushing the lever toward the R position.
     
    After adjustment, check that the shift lever moves smoothly and the shift lever and gear operate correctly.

  9. Inspect shift lever position as follows:

    When shifting from the P to R position with the engine switch on (IG) and the brake pedal depressed, make sure that the shift lever moves smoothly and then moves correctly into the position.
     
    Start the engine and make sure that the vehicle moves forward when shifting from the N to D position and moves rearward when shifting to the R position. If operation cannot be done as specified, inspect the neutral start switch assembly and check the shift lever assembly installation condition.

  11. Reset memory.

  7. Fill the transmission with Dexron®II.

    Negative battery cable.
     
    Transmission oil level dipstick
     
    Front and center exhaust pipes (disconnect oxygen sensors)
     
    Both catalytic converters
     
    Exhaust heat insulator
     
    Transmission fluid filler pipe
     
    Driveshaft
     
    Shift control rod from end of shift lever
     
    Oil cooler pipes
     
    Torque converter inspection plate
     
    Torque converter bolts
     

  4.  
  5. Support the transmission with a suitable jack.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Engine rear mount (4 bolts)
     
    Wiring and connectors (tilt transmission rear downward)
     
    Transmission mounting bolts and the transmission (place jack and wood block under front end of engine)
     

  8.  

To install:

  1. Before installing the transmission, use calipers and a straightedge to check the distance between the installed surface of the torque converter and the front edge of the transmission case. Correct distance is 0.673 in. (17.1mm). If this distance is not correct, check the torque converter installation.
  2.  
  3. Position transmission to the vehicle and install or connect the following:
    NOTE
    Before installation of the oxygen sensor, twist wiring 3 1 / 2 turns in counterclockwise position; this will prevent wires being twisted after sensors are installed.



    Transmission and tighten the bolts to 14mm: 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm); 17mm: 53 ft. lbs. (72 Nm)
     
    Wiring and connectors
     
    Rear engine mount and tighten the bolts to 20 ft. lbs. (26 Nm)
     
    Torque converter bolts to 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm) while rotating the crankshaft
     
    Converter inspection plate; torque bolts to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm)
     
    Oil cooler lines and tighten the clamp bolts to 48 inch lbs. (5.4 Nm)
     
    Oil cooler pipe union nuts to 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm)
     
    Shift control rod; torque nut to 9 ft. lbs. (13 Nm).
     
    Driveshaft
     
    Transmission fluid filler pipe, with new O-ring
     
    Heat insulator
     
    Both catalytic converters, with new gaskets; torque nuts to 46 ft. lbs. (62 Nm)
     
    Tail pipe to center exhaust pipe, with new gaskets; torque bolts to 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm)
     
    Exhaust pipe support bracket bolts to 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm)
     
    Exhaust pipe-to-catalytic converters, with new gaskets, to 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm)
     
    Front floor center brace bolts to 65 inch lbs. (7.4 Nm)
     
    If removed, oxygen sensors to 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm)
     



    Engine under cover
     
    Transmission dipstick
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  4.  
  5. Fill the transmission with recommended fluid type.
  6.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable. Wait at least 90 seconds before performing any other work.
     
    Transmission dipstick and tube
     
    Throttle cable
     
    Driveshaft
     
    Engine undercover
     
    Shift control rod
     
    Exhaust pipe support bracket by removing the 2 bolts
     
    Catalytic converters by removing the 6 nuts
     
    Both side heat insulators
     
    Oil cooler tube clamps and disconnect the tubes
     
    Torque converter inspection plate by removing the 2 bolts
     
    Torque converter bolts
     

  4.  
  5. Support the transmission with a suitable jack.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Rear transmission mount
     
    Overdrive direct clutch speed sensor connector
     
    Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) connector
     
    Park/Neutral Position (PNP) switch connector
     
    Solenoid connector
     
    3 wiring harness clamps from the bracket on the transmission.
     
    10 transmission mounting bolts and the transmission.
     

  8.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Transmission and tighten the bolts as follows: 14mm-27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm); 17mm-53 ft. lbs. (72 Nm)
     
    3 wiring harness clamp to the bracket on the transmission
     
    Solenoid connector
     
    PNP switch connector
     
    VSS connector
     
    Overdrive direct clutch speed sensor connector
     
    Rear transmission mount and tighten the bolts to 19 ft. lbs. (20 Nm) and the nuts to 10 ft. lbs. (13 Nm)
     
    Torque converter bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm)
     
    Converter inspection plate
     
    Support from the transmission
     
    Oil cooler pipes and tighten the union nuts to 32 ft. lbs. (44 Nm)
     
    Side heat insulators
     
    Catalytic converters with new gaskets and new nuts. Tighten the nuts to 46 ft. lbs. (62 Nm).
     
    Exhaust pipe support bracket with the 2 bolts and tighten the bolts to 32 ft. lbs. (44 Nm)
     
    Shift control rod
     
    Engine undercover
     
    Driveshaft
     
    Throttle control cable
     
    Transmission tube and dipstick
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  
  3. Fill the transmission to the proper level with recommended type fluid.
