Camshaft (Cylinder Head) Cover

Removal & Installation



3.0L (2jz-Ge) Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Wait at least 90 seconds before performing any other work.
  4.  
  5. Remove the 4 nuts and engine cover.
  6.  
  7. Drain the cooling system.
  8.  
  9. Remove the intake air resonator.
  10.  
  11. Remove the throttle body and intake air connector assembly.
  12.  
  13. Using a 5mm hexagon wrench, remove the 4 bolts, oil filler cap, timing belt cover and gasket.
  14.  
  15. Remove the ignition coils and high-tension cord set assembly.
  16.  
  17. Remove spark plugs.
  18.  
  19. Disconnect the engine wire from the cylinder head covers.

  21. Remove the No. 1 and No. 2 cylinder head covers as follows:


    1. Remove the 12 bolts and 4 nuts.
    2.  
    3. Using a torx socket (E5), remove the 4 stud bolts.
    4.  
    5. Remove the cylinder head covers and gaskets.
    6.

To install:

  1. Install the No. 1 and No. 2 cylinder head covers as follows:


    1. Remove the any old packing (FIPG) material.
    2.  
    3. Apply seal packing (part No. 08826-00080 or equivalent) to the cylinder head where the timing chain cover meets the head.
    4.  
    5. Install the gaskets to the cylinder head covers.
    6.  
    7. Install the cylinder head covers with the 12 bolts. Tighten the bolts to 75 inch lbs. (8.5 Nm).
    8.  
    9. Using a torx socket (E5), install the 4 stud bolts. Tighten the bolts to 75 inch lbs. (8.5 Nm).
    10.  
    11. Install the 4 nuts to the stud bolts. Tighten the nuts to 75 inch lbs. (8.5 Nm).

  3. Connect the engine wire to the cylinder head covers.
  4.  
  5. Install spark plugs.
  6.  
  7. Install the ignition coils and high-tension cord set assembly.
  8.  
  9. Install timing belt cover and gasket, oil filler cap and 4 bolts.
  10.  
  11. Install the throttle body and intake air connector assembly.
  12.  
  13. Install the intake air resonator.
  14.  
  15. Refill the cooling system.
  16.  
  17. Install the engine cover.
  18.  
  19. Connect the negative battery cable.
  20.  

3.0L (3gr-Fse) Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Wait at least 90 seconds before performing any other work.
  4.  
  5. Remove the oil filler cap sub-assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the 2 bolts and engine hanger No. 1.
  8.  
  9. Remove the 2 bolts and engine hanger No. 2.
  10.  
  11. Remove spark plugs.
  12.  
  13. Remove the ventilation valve on top of the cylinder head cover.
  14.  
  15. Remove the 4 bolts and 4 camshaft position sensors.
  16.  
  17. Remove the 4 bolts and 4 camshaft timing oil control valves.

  19. Remove the No. 1 (left) and No. 2 (right) oil pipes as follows:


    1. Remove the oil check valve bolt, oil pipe union and oil pipe.
    2.  
    3. Remove the oil control valve filter (left or right) and gaskets.
    4.

  21. Remove the bank 1 (left) cylinder head cover as follows:


    1. Remove the 12 bolts, head cover and gasket.
    2.

  23. Remove the bank 2 (right) cylinder head cover as follows:


    1. Remove the 14 bolts, head cover and gasket.
    2.

To install:

  1. Install the bank 1 (left) cylinder head cover as follows:

    1. Apply seal packing (part No. 08826-00080 or equivalent) to the cylinder head as shown in the illustration.
    2.  
    3. Remove any oil from the contact surface.
    4.  
    5. Install the cylinder head cover within 3 minutes after applying seal packing. Do not start the engine within 2 hours after installing.
    6.  
    7. Install a new gasket to the head cover.

    9. Install the cylinder head cover with the 12 bolts. Tighten the bolts (A) to 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm), and tighten the remaining bolts (except A) to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm).

  3. Install the bank 2 (right) cylinder head cover as follows:


    1. Apply seal packing (part No. 08826-00080 or equivalent) to the cylinder head as shown in the illustration.
    2.  
    3. Remove any oil from the contact surface.
    4.  
    5. Install the cylinder head cover within 3 minutes after applying seal packing. Do not start the engine within 2 hours after installing.
    6.  
    7. Install a new gasket to the head cover.

    9. Install the cylinder head cover with the 14 bolts. Tighten the bolts (A) to 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm), and tighten the remaining bolts (except A) to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm).

  5. Install the No. 1 (left) and No. 2 (right) oil pipes as follows:


    1. Make sure that there is no foreign matter on the mesh of the oil control valve filter (left or right). Be careful not to touch the mesh when installing the oil control valve filter.
    2.  
    3. Install the oil control valve filter (left or right) to the oil pipe union. Install new gaskets and temporarily install the oil pipe (on the head cover side).
    4.  
    5. Install a new gasket and temporarily install the oil pipe (on the cylinder head side) with the oil check valve bolt.
    6.  
    7. Tighten the oil pipe union (on the head cover side) to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm).
    8.  
    9. Tighten the oil check valve bolt (on the cylinder head side) to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm).
    10.

  7. Install the 4 camshaft timing oil control valves with the 4 bolts and tighten to 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the camshaft position sensors.
  10.  
  11. Install the 4 camshaft position sensors with the 4 bolts and tighten to 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm).
    1. Apply adhesive (part No. 08833-00070, THREE BOND 1324 or equivalent) around the ventilation valve and install the valve. Tighten the ventilation valve to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).

  13. Install spark plugs.
  14.  
  15. Install engine hanger No. 2 and tighten the 2 bolts to 24 ft. lbs. (33 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Install engine hanger No. 1 and tighten the 2 bolts to 24 ft. lbs. (33 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Install the oil filler cap sub-assembly.
  20.  
  21. Connect the negative battery cable.
  22.  

4.0L (1uz-FE) Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Wait at least 90 seconds before performing any other work.
  4.  
  5. Drain engine coolant.
  6.  
  7. Remove battery clamp cover.
  8.  
  9. Remove air cleaner inlet.
  10.  
  11. Remove V-bank cover.
  12.  
  13. Remove air cleaner and intake air connector assembly.
  14.  
  15. Remove No. 3 timing belt covers.
  16.  
  17. Remove ignition coils.
  18.  
  19. Remove the 9 bolts, 9 seal washers and right cylinder head cover.
  20.  
  21. Remove the left cylinder head cover as follows:


    1. Remove the oil dipstick for the transmission.
    2.  
    3. Disconnect the PCV hose.
    4.  
    5. Disconnect the engine wire clamp from the wire bracket on the delivery pipe.
    6.  
    7. Remove the 9 bolts, 9 seal washers and cylinder head cover.

To install:

  1. Install the cylinder head covers as follows:


    1. Remove any old packing (FIPG) material.
    2.  
    3. Apply seal packing (part No. 08826-00080 or equivalent) to the cylinder heads where the timing cover meets the cylinder head.
    4.  
    5. Install the gasket to the cylinder head cover.
    6.  
    7. Install the seal washer to the bolt.
    8.  
    9. Install the cylinder head cover with the 9 bolts. Uniformly tighten the bolts in several passes to 53 inch lbs. (6 Nm). Install the 2 cylinder head covers.
    10.

  3. Install ignition coils.
  4.  
  5. Install No. 3 timing belt covers.
  6.  
  7. Install air cleaner and intake air connector assembly.
  8.  
  9. Refill engine coolant.
  10.  
  11. Start engine and check for leaks.
  12.  
  13. Check engine coolant level.
  14.  
  15. Install V-bank cover.
  16.  
  17. Install air cleaner inlet.
  18.  
  19. Install battery clamp cover.
  20.  
  21. Connect the negative battery cable.
  22.  

4.3L (3uz-FE) Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Wait at least 90 seconds before performing any other work.
  4.  
  5. Remove the V-bank cover.

  7. Remove the right cylinder head cover as follows:


    1. Remove the bolt, and disconnect the wire clamp bracket on the engine wire from the camshaft bearing cap.
    2.  
    3. Remove the EVAP from the cylinder head cover sub-assembly.
    4.  
    5. Remove the 9 bolts, 9 seal washers, cylinder head cover sub-assembly and gasket.

  9. Remove the left cylinder head cover as follows:


    1. Disconnect the wire clamp from the wire bracket on the cylinder head cover.
    2.  
    3. Remove the EVAP from the cylinder head cover.
    4.  
    5. Remove the 9 bolts, 9 seal washers, cylinder head cover and gasket.
    6.

To install:

  1. Install the left and right cylinder head cover as follows:


    1. Install the gasket to the cylinder head cover.
    2.  
    3. Install the seal washer to the bolt.
    4.  
    5. Install the cylinder head cover with the 9 bolts. Uniformly tighten the bolts in several passes to 53 inch lbs. (6 Nm).
    6.  
    7. Install the hose bracket of the EVAP to the cylinder head cover.
    8.  
    9. Install the wire clamp to the bracket on the cylinder head cover.
    10.  

  2.  
  3. Install the V-bank cover.
  4.  
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.
  6.
