Timing Belt Front Cover

Removal & Installation



1uz-FE Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Wait at least 90 seconds before performing any other work.
  4.  
  5. Remove oil pan protector.
  6.  
  7. Remove the engine under cover.
  8.  
  9. Drain engine coolant.
  10.  
  11. Remove the battery clamp cover.
  12.  
  13. Remove the air cleaner inlet.
  14.  
  15. Remove the bolt, 2 cap nuts and V-bank cover.
  16.  
  17. Remove the air cleaner and intake air connector assembly.
  18.  
  19. Loosen the 4 nuts holding the fluid coupling to the fan bracket.
  20.  
  21. Remove the alternator drive belt.
  22.  
  23. Remove the 4 nuts, the fan, fluid coupling assembly and fan pulley.
  24.  
  25. Remove the radiator assembly.
  26.  
  27. Remove the pulley bolt, cover plate and drive belt idler pulley.
  28.  
  29. Remove the right No. 3 timing belt cover as follows:


    1. Disconnect the PS air hose from the clamp of the timing belt cover.
    2.  
    3. Disconnect the wire clamp.

    5. Disconnect the radiator reservoir outlet hose from the water inlet housing.
    6.  
    7. Remove the bolt and nut, disconnect the outlet pipe from the right No. 3 timing belt cover and left cylinder head.

    9. Remove the 3 bolts, right No. 3 timing belt cover and gasket.

  31. Remove the left No. 3 timing belt cover as follows:


    1. Disconnect the engine wire from the 2 wire clamps.
    2.  
    3. Remove the 4 bolts and nut.

    5. Disconnect the camshaft position sensor wire from the wire clamp on the left No. 3 timing belt cover.
    6.  
    7. Disconnect the sensor connector from the connector bracket.
    8.  
    9. Disconnect the sensor connector.
    10.  
    11. Remove the wire grommet from the left No. 3 timing belt cover.
    12.  
    13. Remove the left N0. 3 timing belt cover and gasket.
    14.

  33. Remove the 2 bolts and No.2 timing belt cover.
  34.  
  35. Remove the A/C compressor from the engine.
  36.  
  37. Remove the 2 bolts, 2 nuts and fan bracket.
  38.  
  39. Remove the alternator.
  40.  
  41. Remove the bolt, 2 nuts and drive belt tensioner.
  42.  
  43. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
  44.  
  45. Remove the 4 bolts, No. 1 timing belt cover.
  46.  
  47. Remove the timing belt cover spacer.
  48.  

To install:

  1. Install the gasket to the timing belt cover spacer.
  2.  
  3. Install the timing belt cover spacer.
  4.  
  5. Install the No. 1 timing belt cover with the 4 bolts.
  6.  
  7. Install the crankshaft pulley.
  8.  
  9. Install the drive belt tensioner with the bolt and 2 nuts. Use a bolt 4.18 inches (106mm) in length. Tighten the bolt and nuts to 12 ft. lbs. (16 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the alternator.

  13. Install the fan bracket with the 2 bolts and 2 nuts. Tighten the bolts and nuts as follows:

    12mm head: 12 ft. lbs. (16 Nm)
     
    14mm head: 24 ft. lbs. (32 Nm)
     

    1. Each bolt length is indicated in the illustration. Bolt Length:

      4.17 inches (106mm) for 12mm head (A)
       
      4.49 inches (114mm) for 14mm head (B)

  15. Install the A/C compressor to the engine.
  16.  
  17. Install the No. 2 timing belt cover with the 2 bolts and tighten to 12 ft. lbs. (16 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Install the right No. 3 timing belt cover as follows:


    1. Install the gasket to the timing belt cover.
    2.  
    3. Fit the timing belt cover, matching it with the fan bracket.
    4.  
    5. Install the timing belt cover with the 3 bolts and tighten to 66 inch lbs. (7.5 Nm).
    6.  
    7. Install the radiator reservoir outlet pipe to the right cylinder head and timing belt cover with the bolt and nut. Tighten the bolt and nut to 66 inch lbs. (7.5 Nm).
    8.  
    9. Connect the outlet hose to the water inlet housing.
    10.  
    11. Connect the wire clamp.
    12.  
    13. Connect the PS air hose to the clamp of the timing belt cover.
    14.

  21. Remove the left No. 3 timing belt cover as follows:


    1. Install the gasket to the timing belt cover.
    2.  
    3. Run the camshaft position sensor wire through the timing belt cover hole.
    4.  
    5. Fit the timing belt cover, matching it with the fan bracket.
    6.  
    7. Install the timing belt cover with the 4 bolts and nut. Tighten the bolt and nut to 66 inch lbs. (7.5 Nm).
    8.  
    9. Install the wire grommet to the timing belt cover.
    10.  
    11. Install the sensor connector to the connector bracket.
    12.  
    13. Connect the sensor connector.
    14.  
    15. Install the sensor wire to the wire clamp on the timing belt cover.
    16.  
    17. Install the engine wire to the 2 wire clamps on the timing belt cover.
    18.

  23. Install the drive belt idler pulley and cover plate with the bolt. Tighten the bolt to 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm).
  24.  
  25. Install the radiator assembly.
  26.  
  27. Temporarily install the fan pulley, the fan, fluid coupling assembly with the 4 nuts.
  28.  
  29. Install the alternator drive belt.
  30.  
  31. Tighten the 4 nuts holding the fluid coupling to the fan bracket to 16 ft. lbs. (21 Nm).
  32.  
  33. Install the air cleaner and intake air connector assembly.
  34.  
  35. Install the V-bank cover.
  36.  
  37. Connect the negative battery cable.
  38.  
  39. Refill the engine cooling system.
  40.  
  41. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  42.  
  43. Recheck engine coolant level.
  44.  
  45. Install the air cleaner inlet.
  46.  
  47. Install the battery clamp cover.
  48.  
  49. Install the engine under cover.
  50.  
  51. Install oil pan protector.
  52.  
  53. Road test the vehicle and check for abnormal noise, shock, slippage, correct shift points and smooth operation.

2jz-Ge Engine

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Wait at least 90 seconds before performing any other work.
  4.  
  5. Remove the engine under cover.
  6.  
  7. Drain engine coolant.
  8.  
  9. Remove radiator assembly.
  10.  
  11. If equipped with a manual transmission, remove the 2 nuts and drive belt tensioner absorber.
  12.  
  13. Remove the accessory drive belt
  14.  
  15. Remove the 3 bolts, plate washer and power steering pump front bracket.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the vane (p/s) pump from the bracket.
  18.  
  19. Using a 5mm hexagon wrench, remove the 4 bolts, oil filler cap, No. 3 timing belt cover and gasket.
  20.  
  21. Using a 5mm hexagon wrench, remove the 3 bolts, No. 2 timing belt cover and gasket.
  22.  
  23. Remove the 3 bolts and drive belt tensioner. Be careful not to drop the bolts inside the timing belt cover.
  24.  
  25. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
  26.  
  27. Remove the 5 bolts, No. 1 timing belt cover and gasket.
  28.  

To install:

  1. Install the gasket to the No. 1 timing belt cover.
  2.  
  3. Install the No. 1 timing belt cover with the 5 bolts and tighten to 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the crankshaft pulley.
  6.  
  7. Install the drive belt tensioner with the 3 bolts and tighten to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm). Be careful not to drop the bolts inside the timing belt cover.
  8.  
  9. Install the gasket to the No. 2 timing belt cover.
  10.  
  11. Using a 5mm hexagon wrench, install the No. 2 timing belt cover with the 3 bolts and tighten to 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the gasket to the No. 3 timing belt cover.
  14.  
  15. Using a 5mm hexagon wrench, install the No. 3 timing belt cover with the 4 bolts and tighten to 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Install the oil filler cap.
  18.  
  19. Install the power steering pump and front bracket.
  20.  
  21. Install the accessory drive belt
  22.  
  23. If equipped with a manual transmission, install drive belt tensioner absorber and tighten the 2 nuts to 14 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  24.  
  25. Install the radiator assembly.
  26.  
  27. Connect the negative battery cable.
  28.  
  29. Refill the engine cooling system.
  30.  
  31. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  32.  
  33. Install the engine under cover.
  34.  
  35. Road test the vehicle and check for abnormal noise, shock, slippage, correct shift points and smooth operation.
  36.  
  37. Recheck engine coolant level.
  38.  

3uz-FE Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Wait at least 90 seconds before performing any other work.
  4.  
  5. Remove air cleaner inlet No. 1.
  6.  
  7. Drain engine coolant.
  8.  
  9. Remove the V-bank cover.
  10.  
  11. Remove the intake air connector pipe.
  12.  
  13. Remove the engine under cover No. 1.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect radiator hose No. 1.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect radiator hose No. 2.
  18.  
  19. Disconnect oil cooler inlet tube No. 1.
  20.  
  21. Disconnect oil cooler outlet tube No. 1.
  22.  
  23. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
  24.  
  25. Remove the radiator assembly.
  26.  
  27. Remove the accessory drive belt
  28.  
  29. Remove the 2 bolts, nut and vane pump assembly. Pump should be removed with the hoses connected and then hang with a rope or wire on the body-s side.
  30.  
  31. Remove the alternator.
  32.  
  33. Remove the A/C compressor assembly. The cooler compressor with the magnetic clutch should be removed with the low-pressure and high-pressure hoses connected and then hang with a rope or wire on the body-s side.

  35. Disconnect the 2 PS air hoses from the clamp on the timing belt cover No. 2.
  36.  
  37. Remove the cap nut, 3 bolts, timing belt cover No. 2 and gasket.

  39. Remove the left timing belt cover sub-assembly No. 3 as follows:


    1. Remove the cap nut, and disconnect the No.3 water bypass pipe from the cover.
    2.  
    3. Disconnect the 2 water by-pass hoses as shown in the illustration.
    4.  
    5. Disconnect the engine wire from the 2 wire clamps.
    6.  
    7. Disconnect the camshaft position sensor connector.
    8.  
    9. Disconnect the camshaft position sensor wire from the wire clamp on the cover.
    10.  
    11. Remove the wire grommet from the cover.
    12.  
    13. Remove the 4 bolts.
    14.  
    15. Disconnect the cover from the timing plate and camshaft bearing cap.
    16.  
    17. Disconnect the wire clamp for the sensor from the cover.
    18.  
    19. Remove the connector holder from the sensor connector.
    20.  
    21. Remove the left timing belt cover No. 3 and gasket.

  41. Remove the 2 bolts and timing belt cover sub-assembly No. 2.
  42.  
  43. Remove the bolt, 2 nuts and drive belt tensioner.
  44.  
  45. Remove the 2 bolts, 2 nuts and idler pulley assembly.
  46.  
  47. Remove the crankshaft pulley (damper).
  48.  
  49. Remove the 4 bolts and timing belt No. 1 cover.
  50.  

To install:

  1. Install the timing belt No. 1 cover with the 4 bolts and tighten to 66 inch lbs. (7.5 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the crankshaft pulley (damper).

  5. Install the idler pulley assembly with the 2 bolts and 2 nuts. Tighten the bolts and nuts as follows:

    14mm head bolt A: 24 ft. lbs. (32 Nm)
     
    12mm head bolt B: 12 ft. lbs. (16 Nm)
     

    1. Each bolt length is indicated below. Bolt Length:

      4.49 inches (114mm) for 14mm head (A)
       
      4.17 inches (106mm) for 12mm head (B)

  7. Install the drive belt tensioner with the bolt and 2 nuts. Tighten the bolt and nuts to 12 ft. lbs. (16 Nm). Use a bolt that is 4.18 inches (106mm) in length.
  8.  
  9. Fit the timing belt cover sub-assembly No. 2, matching the claws and pin with each part. Install the timing belt cover with the 2 bolts and tighten to 12 ft. lbs. (16 Nm). Use bolts that are 4.17 inches (106mm) in length.
  10.  
  11. Install the left timing belt cover sub-assembly No. 3 as follows:


    1. Install the gasket to the cover.
    2.  
    3. Run the camshaft position sensor wire through the cover hole.
    4.  
    5. Install the cover with the 4 bolts and tighten to 66 inch lbs. (7.5 Nm).
    6.  
    7. Install the wire grommet to the cover.
    8.  
    9. Install the sensor connector to the sensor holder.
    10.  
    11. Connect the sensor connector.
    12.  
    13. Install the sensor wire to the wire clamp on the cover.
    14.  
    15. Install the engine wire to the 2 wire clamps on the cover.
    16.  
    17. Connect the 2 water by-pass hoses, as shown in the illustration.
    18.  
    19. Install the No. 3 water by-pass pipe to the cover with the cap nut and tighten to 66 inch lbs. (7.5 Nm).
    20.

  13. Install gasket to timing belt cover No. 2. Install the cover with the cap nut and 3 bolts and tighten to 66 inch lbs. (7.5 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install the 2 PS air hoses to the clamp on the timing belt cover No. 2.
  16.  
  17. Install the A/C compressor, stay and wire bracket with the 3 bolts and nut. Tighten the bolts to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm). Tighten the nut to 21 ft. lbs. (29 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Remove the alternator.
  20.  
  21. Install the vane pump assembly with the 2 bolts and nuts. Alternately tighten the bolts and nut. Tighten the bolts to 29 ft. lbs. (39.2 Nm). Tighten the nut to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).
  22.  
  23. Install the accessory drive belt
  24.  
  25. Install the radiator assembly.
  26.  
  27. Install the air cleaner assembly and tighten the fasteners to 44 inch lbs. (5 Nm).
  28.  
  29. Connect oil cooler outlet tube No. 1.
  30.  
  31. Connect oil cooler inlet tube No. 1.
  32.  
  33. Connect radiator hose No. 2.
  34.  
  35. Connect radiator hose No. 1.
  36.  
  37. Install air cleaner inlet No. 1 and tighten the fasteners to 44 inch lbs. (5 Nm).
  38.  
  39. Install the intake air connector pipe and tighten the fasteners to 44 inch lbs. (5 Nm).
  40.  
  41. Install the V-bank cover and tighten the fasteners to 44 inch lbs. (5 Nm).
  42.  
  43. Refill the engine cooling system and check for leaks.
  44.  
  45. Install the engine under cover No. 1.
  46.  
  47. Connect the negative battery cable.
  48.
