Valve Lash (Clearance) Adjustment

1MZ-FE Engines



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  


NOTE
Adjust the valve clearance when the engine is cold.

  1. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Accelerator/throttle cable from the throttle linkage
     
    Air intake chamber
     
    Cylinder head covers
     

  2.  
  3. Turn the crankshaft pulley and align it's groove with the timing mark0
  4.  
  5. Check that the valve lash adjusters on the No. 1 intake are loose and the exhaust are tight. If not, turn the crankshaft on complete revolution (360 degrees).
  6.  
  7. Measure the clearance between the valve lash adjuster and the camshaft. Record the measurements on valves No. 1, 2, 3 and 6.
  8.  
  9. The intake valve clearance cold is 0.006-0.010 in. (0.15-0.25mm).
  10.  
  11. The exhaust valve clearance cold is 0.010-0.014 in. (0.25-0.35mm).
  12.  
  13. Turn the crankshaft23
  14.  
  15. Turn the crankshaft another23
  16.  
  17. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Adjusting shim and turn the crankshaft to position the cam lobe of the camshaft on the adjusting valve upward. Press down the valve lash adjuster with the proper tool and place the proper tool between the camshaft and the valve lash adjuster. Remove the tool.

  19. Determine the thickness of the replacement shim as follows:
    1. T: Thickness of the used shim
    2.  
    3. A: Measured valve clearance
    4.  
    5. N: Thickness of new shim
    6.  
    7. Intake: N = T + (A - 0.006-0.010 in. (0.15-0.25mm))
    8.  
    9. Exhaust: N = T + (A - 0.010-0.014 in. (0.25-0.35mm))
    10.  

  20.  
  21. Install the specified valve shim on the valve lash adjuster
  22.  
  23. Recheck the valve clearance.
  24.  
  25. Install the cylinder head covers and intake chamber.
  26.  
  27. Connect the negative battery cable.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
    NOTE
    Adjust the valve clearance when the engine is cold.

  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Accelerator/throttle cable from the throttle linkage
     
    Air intake chamber
     
    Cylinder head covers
     

  4.  
  5. Turn the crankshaft pulley and align it's groove with the timing mark 0 of the No. 1 timing cover.
  6.  
  7. Check that the valve lash adjusters on the No. 1 intake are loose and the exhaust are tight. If not, turn the crankshaft on complete revolution (360 degrees).
  8.  
  9. Measure the clearance between the valve lash adjuster and the camshaft. Record the measurements on valves No. 1, 2, 3 and 6.

  11. The intake valve clearance cold is 0.006-0.010 in. (0.15-0.25mm).

  15. Turn the crankshaft 2 / 3 of a revolution (240 degrees) and check the clearance on valves No. 2, 3, 4 and 5 and record.

  17. Turn the crankshaft another 2 / 3 of a revolution and check valves; No. 1, 4, 5 and 6 and record.

  19. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Adjusting shim and turn the crankshaft to position the cam lobe of the camshaft on the adjusting valve upward. Press down the valve lash adjuster with the proper tool and place the proper tool between the camshaft and the valve lash adjuster. Remove the tool.

  21. Determine the thickness of the replacement shim as follows:

    T: Thickness of the used shim
     
    A: Measured valve clearance
     
    N: Thickness of new shim
     
    Intake: N = T + (A - 0.006-0.010 in. (0.15-0.25mm))
     
    Exhaust: N = T + (A - 0.010-0.014 in. (0.25-0.35mm))
     

  22.  
  23. Install the specified valve shim on the valve lash adjuster
  24.  
  25. Recheck the valve clearance.
  26.  
  27. Install the cylinder head covers and intake chamber.
  28.  
  29. Connect the negative battery cable.
  30.  

1UZ-FE & 3UZ-FE Engines



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following, as applicable:

    Negative battery cable
     
    V-bank cover
     
    Intake air connector pipe
     
    Ignition coils
     
    No. 3 timing belt covers
     
    Spark plug wires
     
    Cylinder head covers
     

  4.  
  5. Turn the crankshaft pulley and align its groove with the timing mark0
  6.  
  7. Measure the clearance between the valve lash adjuster and the camshaft on the valves, as illustrated, in the first sequence. Record the measurements.
    1. The intake valve lash cold is 0.006-0.010 in. (0.15-0.25mm).
    2.  
    3. The exhaust valve lash cold is 0.010-0.014 in. (0.25-0.35mm).
    4.  

  8.  
  9. Turn the crankshaft 1 full revolution (360 degrees) and align the mark.
  10.  
  11. Measure the clearance between the valve lash adjuster and the camshaft on the valves, as illustrated, in the second sequence. Record these measurements.
  12.  
  13. If necessary, remove the camshafts.
  14.  
  15. Remove the adjusting shim and turn the crankshaft to position the cam lobe of the camshaft on the adjusting valve upward. Position the hole in the shim toward the outside of the cylinder head. Press down the valve lash adjuster with the proper tool and place the proper tool between the camshaft and the valve lash adjuster. Remove the tool.

  17. Remove the adjusting shim with the proper tool.
  18.  
  19. Determine the thickness of the replacement shim as follows:
    1. T = Thickness of the used shim
    2.  
    3. A = Measured valve lash
    4.  
    5. N = Thickness of new shim
    6.  
    7. Intake: N = T + (A - 0.006-0.010 in. (0.15-0.25mm))
    8.  
    9. Exhaust: N = T + (A - 0.010-0.014 in. (0.25-0.35mm))
    10.

  21. Recheck the valve lash. Install the cylinder head covers.
  22.  
  23. Connect the spark plug wires and install the No. 3 timing belt covers.
  24.  
  25. Install or reconnect all other components in reverse of removal procedure.
  26.  
  27. Connect the negative battery cable.
  28.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.

  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    No. 3 timing belt covers
     
    Spark plug wires
     
    Cylinder head covers.

  5. Turn the crankshaft pulley and align its groove with the timing mark 0 of the No. 1 timing cover. Check that the timing marks of the camshaft timing pulleys and timing belt rear plates are aligned. If not, turn the crankshaft 1 revolution (360 degrees) and align the mark.
  6.  
  7. Measure the clearance between the valve lash adjuster and the camshaft on the valves in the first sequence and record.
    1. The intake valve clearance cold is 0.006-0.010 in. (0.15-0.25mm).
    2.  
    3. The exhaust valve clearance cold is 0.010-0.014 in. (0.25-0.35mm).
    4.

  9. Turn the crankshaft 1 full revolution (360 degrees) and align the mark.

  11. Measure the clearance between the valve lash adjuster and the camshaft on the valves in the second sequence and record.
  12.  
  13. Remove the adjusting shim and turn the crankshaft to position the cam lobe of the camshaft on the adjusting valve upward. Position the hole in the shim toward the outside of the cylinder head. Press down the valve lash adjuster with the proper tool and place the proper tool between the camshaft and the valve lash adjuster. Remove the tool.
  14.  
  15. Remove the adjusting shim with the proper tool.
  16.  
  17. Determine the thickness of the replacement shim as follows:

    T = Thickness of the used shim
     
    A = Measured valve clearance
     
    N = Thickness of new shim
     
    Intake: N = T + (A - 0.006-0.010 in. (0.15-0.25mm))
     
    Exhaust: N = T + (A - 0.010-0.014 in. (0.25-0.35mm))

  19. Recheck the valve clearance. Install the cylinder head covers.
  20.  
  21. Connect the spark plug wires and install the No. 3 timing belt covers.
  22.  
  23. Connect the negative battery cable.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.

  3. Remove or disconnect the following, as applicable:

    Negative battery cable

  11. Measure the clearance between the valve lash adjuster and the camshaft on the valves, as illustrated, in the second sequence. Record these measurements.

  13. If necessary, remove the camshafts.
  14.

  21. Recheck the valve lash. Install the cylinder head covers.

  23. Connect the spark plug wires and install the No. 3 timing belt covers.

  25. Install or reconnect all other components in reverse of removal procedure.

  27. Connect the negative battery cable.

2jz-GE Engine




NOTE
Adjust the valve clearance when the engine is cold.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Accelerator/throttle cable from the throttle linkage
     
    Cylinder head covers
     

  4.  
  5. Turn the crankshaft pulley and align it's groove with the timing mark 0 of the No. 1 timing cover.
  6.  
  7. Check that the timing marks on the camshaft sprockets are in alignment with the marks on the No. 4 timing cover. If not, turn the crankshaft 1 complete revolution (360 degrees).
  8.  
  9. Uniformly tighten the camshaft bearing cap bolts in several passes, in the sequence, to 14 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).

  11. Measure the clearance between the valve lash adjuster and the camshaft. Record the measurements on valves No. 1, 4 and 5.
    1. The intake valve clearance cold is 0.006-0.010 in. (0.15-0.25mm).
    2.  
    3. The exhaust valve clearance cold is 0.010-0.014 in. (0.25-0.35mm).
    4.  

  12.  
  13. Turn the crankshaft 2 / 3 of a revolution (240 degrees) and check the clearance on valves No. 3, 5 and 6 and record.

  15. Turn the crankshaft another 2 / 3 of a revolution and check valves: No. 2, 4 and 6 and record.
  16.  
  17. Remove the adjusting shim and turn the crankshaft to position the cam lobe of the camshaft on the adjusting valve upward. The notches should be perpendicular to the camshaft. Press down the valve lash adjuster with the proper tool and place the proper tool between the camshaft and the valve lash adjuster. Remove the tool.

  19. Remove the adjusting shim with the proper tool (a magnetic finger).

  21. Determine the thickness of the replacement shim as follows:

    Intake: N = T + (A - 0.006-0.010 in. (0.15-0.25mm))

  23. Install the specified valve shim on the valve lash adjuster.

  27. Install the cylinder head covers and intake chamber.

  29. Connect the negative battery cable.

NOTE
Adjust the valve lash when the engine is cold.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.

    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine cover
     
    Engine coolant
     
    Intake and air cleaner assemblies
     
    Throttle body and accelerator/throttle cable from the throttle linkage
     
    Wiring and hoses required to access cylinder head covers (mark each one for reinstallation)
     
    No. 3 timing belt cover
     
    Ignition coils and wires
     
    Spark plugs
     
    Cylinder head covers
     

  4.  
  5. Turn the crankshaft pulley and align its groove with the timing mark 0 of the No. 1 timing cover.
  6.  
  7. Check that the timing marks on the camshaft sprockets are in alignment with the marks on the No. 4 timing cover. If not, turn the crankshaft 1 complete revolution (360 degrees).
  8.  
  9. For this step, check only valves as indicated in appropriate illustration. Adjust these valves first.

  11. Measure the clearance between the valve lash adjuster and the camshaft. Record the measurements.
    1. The intake valve lash cold is 0.006-0.010 in. (0.15-0.25mm).

  13. For models except 2004-05, turn the crankshaft 2 / 3 of a revolution (240 degrees) and check the clearance on other valves as indicated.

  15. Turn the crankshaft pulley one full revolution (360°) and align the groove with the -0- timing marks on the No. 1 timing belt cover.
  16.  
  17. Measure the clearance between the valve lash adjuster and the camshaft. Record the measurements.
    1. The intake valve lash cold is 0.006-0.010 in. (0.15-0.25mm).
    2.  
    3. The exhaust valve lash cold is 0.010-0.014 in. (0.25-0.35mm).

3gr-Fse Engine



The 3.0L (3GR-FSE) engine is equipped with hydraulic valves which are not adjustable.

3MZ-FE Engines



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable. Wait at least 90 seconds before performing any other work
     
    Front suspension upper brace center
     
    V-bank cover sub-assembly
     
    Air cleaner assembly
     
    Emission control valve set
     
    Intake air surge tank
     
    Ignition coil assembly
     
    Cylinder head valve covers
     

  4.  
  5. Turn the crankshaft pulley and align its groove with the timing mark0
  6.  
  7. Measure the clearance between the valve lash adjuster and the camshaft on the valves in the first sequence and record.
    1. The intake valve clearance cold is 0.006-0.010 in. (0.15-0.25mm).
    2.  
    3. The exhaust valve clearance cold is 0.010-0.014 in. (0.25-0.35mm).
    4.  

  8.  
  9. Turn the crankshaft 2/3 revolution and (240 degrees).
  10.  
  11. Measure the clearance between the valve lash adjuster and the camshaft on the valves in the second sequence and record.
    1. The intake valve clearance cold is 0.006-0.010 in. (0.15-0.25mm).
    2.  
    3. The exhaust valve clearance cold is 0.010-0.014 in. (0.25-0.35mm).
    4.

  13. Turn the crankshaft 2/3 revolution and (240 degrees).
  14.  
  15. Measure the clearance between the valve lash adjuster and the camshaft on the valves in the third sequence and record.
    1. The intake valve clearance cold is 0.006-0.010 in. (0.15-0.25mm).
    2.  
    3. The exhaust valve clearance cold is 0.010-0.014 in. (0.25-0.35mm).
    4.

  17. Adjust the valve lash using the following procedure

  19. Remove the adjusting shim and turn the crankshaft to position the cam lobe of the camshaft on the adjusting valve upward. Position the hole in the shim toward the outside of the cylinder head. Press down the valve lash adjuster with the proper tool and place the proper tool between the camshaft and the valve lash adjuster. Remove the tool.

Place the adjusting shim on the valve lifter with the imprinted number facing down.

    Cylinder head valve covers
     
    Ignition coil assembly
     
    Intake air surge tank
     
    Emission control valve set
     
    Air cleaner assembly
     
    Vacuum hoses
     
    Front suspension upper center brace
     
    Negitive battery cable
